Above average food, the staff are nice enough but often miss an item or two from our phone orders. But generally a great experience.

Yeah, if you could consider a place that only has pokie machines a casino then this is basically what this place is (and I believe that is the case in locals that happen to be overseas). Anyway, so that I feel comfortable letting people know what to expect when they come here, I decided that I would have one beer, and then go and find some place else to spend my time.

Start the night off at Monkey Bar before bar hopping your way around Chatswood. The food at Monkey is of star quality and will be luring you back again for another feed. I love the fact that Monkey Bar is open until 3am from Monday- Saturday, a rarity nowadays! While the bar itself is a little on the seedy side, the cheap drinks and the delectable food sure make up for it. The frosted glass in the girls bathroom is a little off putting but after a few drinks you won't notice. The frosting barely shows anything, but at first its a bit daunting. Happy Hour starts at 5pm and ceases at 7pm. Schooners are attractively priced at $3.50 and with karaoke on Thursday evenings, it's bound to be a loose night. For those who can't get enough of Mexican food, Monkey Bar hosts an all-you-can-eat night on Thursdays. They also have functions for Christmas and Melbourne Cup. Poker nights occur on Wednesday's and is best savoured with a cheap drink or two! For a full list of weekly specials visit their website and click "menu". Champers at $2.50 on a Friday between 4-6pm is almost unbeatable in terms of price! The staff are also really talented at creative shots and cocktails.

They did seat us under a staircase and it was annoying hearing the heavy footsteps stomping up and down throughout dinner service. The food was very good to stellar! As others have mentioned, the Tacos are King here. Tartare Tacos are amazing, and we loved the Salmon Civiche and the carnitas tacos, as well. Flathead Civiche was delicious, Brussels Sprouts were super tasty, and we also enjoyed the twice cooked Pork Belly. Not so good was the Pato Ahumado. The mole was really tasty but not enough, and the breast was really tough and fatty, plus no proper cutlery provided. Really disappointing, as we couldn't eat or enjoy it and it was like we just threw $72 away. While I did appreciate their coursing, we did wait for long periods between. Cocktails were good, as was a glass of wine, but pours are very light. Recommended, for sure. Avoid the duck.

The service is nice. An employee greeted us within a minute and led us a table, and also brought us water quickly. They use empty (and clean) tequila bottles for the table water, which I thought was cute. No one really checks on you throughout the meal, but this is standard for the city. We never wanted for anything. The food was where I knocked off at least 1 star. Everything was made with care, and was presented well. But the authentic taste was nowhere to be found. The closest they have to salsa is a ranchero sauce. It's pretty close, but no actual salsa. Our entrees tasted good, and looked similar to Mexican plates, but was just missing some actual Mexican flavor. The portions were perfect. Plates were plenty big, but we didn't need takeaway containers. The restaurant was comfortable and not too small and not too big. The prices were okay, but I'm still sticker shocked here. I got a half portion of nachos for $14. He got a platter with a taco, enchilada, and rice for $20. The drinks didn't have prices, and we were exhausted so I can't comment on flavor or price. But they did have a cool option to pick a combo plate and a glass of sangria for $25! So I would def pick that, if I were you. I would go back if someone else wanted to go, for sure. But if it were just me, I would wait a while before going back.

The nachos had a severe lack of chips with a mountain of shredded beef and beans. Quite salty. Sour cream and guacamole not included, additional charge. 4.90 for a teeny tub of guac and 3 bucks for cream. Hmm? My tomatoey cheese topped garlic prawns came with a bowl of kinda-stale hard rice and two small wraps. Again, small portions but three wraps would've been nice. Maybe it's just the things we ordered - from my table espionage I gathered intel that the burritos looked very nice & filling and the cocktails looked great! Another thing they did right was the burning hot plates keeping the food nice n warm. Will be back to try more things but in the meantime, a disappointing experience.

We decided to try it out this week and I wasn't sure how I felt about it when I walked in to the restaurant. I knew I could be setting myself up for complete disappointment because clearly someone FROM So Cal will have high expectations of a restaurant with the same name. I pictured overpriced small portions (isn't that how all American/Mexican places are in Sydney?). I pictured flavours that were not authentic. I pictured the staff not knowing that no one from So Cal actually calls the beer Pabst Blue Ribbon, the correct name is PBR. But... much to my surprise and delight, none of this happened. Firstly, the portion sizes were on par with any share plates in Sydney- American, Mexican or otherwise. In fact, the quesadilla, which could have been a total rip off at $20, was massive by Aussie standards! We saw one come out to another table and I thought for sure they must have ordered two, but low and behold, it was one. Plenty to share! The flavours... ok so these weren't the most amazing taste sensations I've ever experienced, but the food was good. We tried A LOT of it. The pork quesadilla, beef tacos, chicken sliders, beef sliders, corn, tater tots, chips and dip, and beef tartare. Now, I can't say I ate it all myself since I only eat chicken, but what I did have, I enjoyed. The corn was delicious, probably one of my favourite things. The dips... well, I'm a big salsa and guac critic and while they weren't the best I've had, they were not half bad, but the chips were pretty crap. I wish people in this country would make their own tortilla chips for a change rather than buying crappy Old El Paso style bagged chips. Also, cumin doesn't belong in pico de gallo type salsa, but nonetheless it still tasted good. The chicken sliders were pretty tasty. I asked for mine with none of the salami/chorizo stuff on it and they were really flexible and gave me two with some chipotle aioli instead. They also were willing to charge me half price for just two of them which was great! Tater tots seemed like they came out of a freezer at woolies but the aioli dip was nice and they gave a lot of it, no skimping around with sauce quantities here. My group said the beef sliders were just ok as the buns were over toasted and a bit too hard. The beef taco tortillas were also over toasted and a little burnt and the pork quesadillas were lacking a bit of flavour. None of it was bad, but I wouldn't say it blew any of us away. And to top it off, the PBRs were pretty good value (again, for Sydney) and the servers actually knew to call them PBR. Props! The final winner for me? The music! Super beachy reggae style tunes totally made me feel at home, particularly when they played sublime, which I NEVER hear here. All in all, a winner. I think going in with low expectations actually made this a better experience. For food quality and taste I'd probably give this a 3 star but the vibe takes it up a notch for me. Loved the atmosphere and something like this was REALLY needed on the lower north shore. It's the first place around that feels like a proper fun and trendy bar.

The Vego ($15AUD) patty is made with mixed bean, corn and coriander, and topped with citrus rocket, tomato and jalapeño mayo, and this monster of a sandwich had me reminiscing being on the Rocky Point beach. The burger wasn't the only stellar reason why this bar and restaurant made me happy. Head through the dimly lit pub area to the back of the restaurant to discover a fresh air patio filled with lots of natural light and quirky decorations. It's relaxed and will make you feel right at home. Back to the food. I was so excited to try the waffle fries that usually come with the burgers and sandwiches, but unfortunately, the fryer was down -- or "f*cked," as a humorous sign pointed out. The restaurant compensated for the lack of fried potatoes by giving us complimentary chips and guacamole, normally $10. The portion was plentiful and would be a great appetizer option, and the guac was creamy and sprinkled with some heat. For those in Australia hankering for Mexican or American food, The Hayberry is a great choice because of its wide selection of tacos, fajitas, buffalo wings and burgers. Service was super-friendly, and the casual atmosphere makes it a top-notch place to stop for after-work drinks and bites, as I did, or to meet a big groups, since there are lots of spacious tables to spread out on. The cocktail menu is also fun, as it offers margaritas and fruity drinks with fresh juice. It quickly became one of my favorite places I've checked out since I've been in Sydney.

I rocked a bad-ass burger, The Classic ($15), and it was the nit's tits, juicy and cheezy and the bun melded with the patty and made sweet sweet love to it without becoming soggy or break-y and man it was just dope, the waffle fries were great too. The $10 pints of Angry Man Pale Ale hit the spot, and the vibe was dark and dingy and smoky without being, y'know, actually smoky because that's illegal, anyway my point is it's a damn fun place. BUT. And here comes the bad. The glassie working tonight was the pits. Since we're talking songs, y'know that Kendrick Lamar song "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe"? Well this guy did that, hard. I asked if there was a menu I could look at and he shrugged and said all testy-like "They're all out on the floor" and stalked away with his tank top and his rib rattoo. Super helpful, thanks friend! Soon after we found a seat at the side of the bar and this same guy saw me waiting to order and snapped "Ya won't get served there mate. It doesn't have a bar mat, you'll only get served where there's a bar mat." Oh good, thank you, you've been wonderful. This has an "outdoor area" at the entrance to one of the arcades but quite a large indoor seating area. We had to change our table three times as the air con was blasting air directly down on the centre tables. This was probably why all the tables were occupied on the periphery. The coffee was not very nice at all. The poor waitress all had a shocker and spilt it on delivery to the table....I am sorry she didn't spill the lot. It was luke warm, no froth and the beans tasted burnt (goodness knows how that happened as I don't think they roast them there). The french toast was good. The poached eggs were on sour dough with a really tough crust. No problems with the taste but the implements given to me to cut the crust were useless. The knife wouldn't have cut butter despite being serrated. I was either cutting off too large a piece (limiting the amount of cutting) or too small a piece running the risk of firing it across the table. The service was fine and the food was good but the coffee & experience was poor.
