I had to bring my toddler with me and he is all over the place and they were so understanding and tolerant of him. They accommodated my son and me and I am so grateful. She was extremely rude and unhelpful. I was then switched to a biosimilar, and months later I experienced significant side effects. I left several messages with the nurse to have Dr. Smith call me to no avail. I then obtained insurance with a new company hoping to get back on Humira. The insurance company representative told me that my doctor needed to submit a prior authorization form. I asked the nurse to do so and to copy me, particularly since she refused to speak with the insurance representative or allow me to speak directly with the doctor. Apparently, she never submitted it. I found a new doctor, and within one week I was approved for Humira again.

Not having to go to a PC doctor to get a referral to a specialist definitely saves some coin. Unless you try to go to this practice. I called to make an appointment, and they refused to see me unless a PC doctor referred me specifically to them. I have never heard of this before - I tried to explain that I had been seeing a GI specialist where I used to live and it is a known GI issue and since my insurance doesn't require referrals, can't I just come in? To which they said no. So, they want me to find a new PC doctor, wait for a new patient appointment to be available, pay the Aetna negotiated rate to see that doc (probably $2-300 bucks for a 5 minute conversation that ends with, "yeah, you need to see a GI specialist.") then wait for an available new patient slot at their practice. This practice clearly doesn't give a shit about helping patients, just making sure they pump as much money out of patients as possible.

I had an appointment set at 12:30 PM at the Hollings Cancer Center Labs. I arrived at 12:15 PM…read moresigned in through the kiosk and waited outside the lab area. There were 2 other patients also waiting. The other patients were called in. At 12:25 PM, I noted that it appeared that everyone was leaving for lunch. I waited another 5 minutes and knocked on the lab door. No one answered. About 2 minutes later a heavy set woman (technician I think) appeared and told me that I would have to come back later. I'm not certain what is happening at the labs there, but something is wrong. I went to another appoint and returned at 2:30 PM and they drew my blood labs. I have noticed that in the last 6 months that the service (other than the doctors), was not what it should be. I found out that MUSC has a "C" rating from the Leap Frog Group (a national nonprofit watchdog). They stated "Charleston (University Medical Center): Earned a "C" grade, frequently penalized for issues like C. diff infections and certain post-surgery complications." Roper has an "A".

During the appointment, he mentioned that he had been having migraines and trouble sleeping. The MD told him they believed the migraines were being caused by lack of sleep, and recommended he try melatonin. If this did not work, said they would prescribe a medication to help with sleep. This was the extent of the discussion. We got our bill, and had been charged not only for a "preventive med" appointment, but also for an entirely different appointment - "problem focused." In total, we were charged $449 for a single appointment lasting 15 minutes. So, the lesson here is, if going to Island Medical for an annual medical checkup, be sure to not actually mention any health issues you are having, or you will be charged for two appointments.

I had a very concerning experience at East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant involving a…read morenurse who identified herself as Wendy. My cousin, a Puerto Rican American, came to the ER with severe abdominal/side/back pain and was visibly crying and in significant distress. She called me earlier that evening crying and asking for help. When I arrived at approximately 11:00 PM, I personally observed that she was still in severe pain and distress. What concerns me most is that it was not until after I arrived, spoke with the nursing staff, and requested that another nurse assist my cousin that she received medication from a different nurse. After that nurse, Nicki, administered the medication, I personally watched my cousin finally begin to get relief. She was able to sit up, talk to me, and most importantly, she was no longer crying and visibly suffering from the severe pain she had been experiencing. That made the earlier lack of relief especially concerning to me. I had also requested that Wendy no longer care for my cousin because my cousin had become uncomfortable with the way she was being treated. Despite that request, Wendy returned to the room. My cousin was asking reasonable questions about how long she would have to wait for her ultrasound. She was already extremely anxious and began visibly shaking. Instead of helping calm the situation, Wendy told her to "stop acting like a child and start acting like an adult." I found that completely inappropriate toward a patient who was already experiencing severe pain and distress. I was also concerned that medication was brought into the room without a clear explanation of what it was before my cousin took it. I believe patients should be clearly informed about medications they are being given. Eventually, another nurse came into the room and treated my cousin with kindness and professionalism. That nurse even apologized for what had happened earlier. The contrast between the two interactions was significant. To be clear, my concern is not simply that the ER could not immediately determine the cause of my cousin's pain. We understand that emergency medicine involves testing and uncertainty. My concern is how my cousin was treated while she was seeking care and particularly the fact that she remained in severe distress until after I intervened and another nurse provided medication, after which I personally witnessed a significant improvement in her condition. We are still waiting to submit a formal complaint to ask the hospital to review the entire encounter, including the medication administration record, nursing documentation, and staff conduct. If you visit this ER, advocate for yourself, ask questions about medications before taking them, and bring someone you trust with you if possible. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect when they are at their most vulnerable.
