We came in from out of town and were craving a good pizza, maybe a Chicago style. Found Gusano's and we were greeted by a very polite and professional Reagan. She also took our order and delivered a VERY tasty Chicago style pizza. The pizza did not disappoint. Great flavor and cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed a very good House Salad. Inside the restaurant were more than 7 or 8 televisions playing various sports events. At first the restaurant was not too busy. By the time we left it was packed. I now see why. Being from Chicago, I was excited to find a pizza restaurant in Joplin Missouri and couldn't wait to sink my teeth in a Chicago Style Pizza right here in Missouri!.... After ordering a large deep dish with extra CHEESE sausage and pepperoni, my husband and I drove to the location on 7th street to pick up the pizza. Question: how is this establishment able to call themselves "Chicago Pizza??" The LARGE Pizza we ordered was the size of a medium pizza you would get in Chicago. The pizza sauce was too salty The sausage wasn't like Chicago at all! It came in the form of "sausage pellets" not the chunks of juicy, mouth-watering quarter sized pieces of sausage you would get at a real Chicago Pizzeria. I asked for EXTRA CHEESE, was charged for the extra cheese but the pizza hardly had any cheese on it that you would find on a authentic Chicago Pizza... The weirdest thing about this Missouri version of Chicago Pizza, is that they put the over salted tomato sauce they call pizza sauce ON TOP of the pizza! The CRUST was the worst part of all! The CRUST has the consistency of "crackers" not anywhere close to the crusty exterior, the chewy interior and the yeasty deliciousness of a real Chicago Pizza.... I never saw anything like it in my life. It was the type of pizza you would eat only if you are very hungry, and throwing the remaining slices in the trash. Recently had to be in Joplin for a funeral and revisited Gusano's. A very lively, sports bar and there were several teenage sports players and their coaches there. While it's known for its pizza, I chose the Spaghetti and Meatballs and my husband had an Italian Sub with chips. My husband & I chose this restaurant for an anniversary dinner while visiting from out of town, the hostess did not inform us of live music nor give us the option to sit near the stage. Then we were disappointed by the flavor of both the cheese sticks & the "Chicago style" Carnivore Craze. If you want to see a certain sports event on TV, they are more than accommodating. Rylee and Kelsey at the bar always make us feel welcome and part of the Gusano's family. I went to Gusano's with a couple of friends after we heard its the best deep dish in town. I would actually agree with that statement -- it's not like Chicago deep dish but it is the best in town haha. Pizza would be a four but service was about a three. Cool place and it was hopping in the bar area when we were there. (Chiefs were playing!) Maybe that's why the service was a little spotty. After we sat down, we realized that we had been to one of their other restaurants in Rogers. This one seems newer and the outdoor area is really cool. It must be great in summer. Deep dish was loaded but the crust was a bit different. We couldn't really put our finger on it....just OK. It's better than any chain option so we will probably give them another try. read more

There seems to be three tiers of pizza joints anywhere I live. On the low end there is the Ceasar Ceasar and other fast food chains. I don't​ like any of them. Then there are​ the better grade chains like Godfather or Old Chicago. I do like these. And then there is the premium artisan style pizza joints with wood-fired​ ovens and herb gardens in back. I suppose there is another tier of beer house/pizza joints that are loud, with TV's everywhere and over priced food to pair with beer. Somehow, Gussano's live in the middle of all of this. Yes, it's​ a sports bar, yes its the kind of place college kids hang out in. But on the other hand​d its got really good premium pizza, calzones and other dishes. I honestly​ would not want to be in here during a big game, or when the coods are off campus and hanging out. That wasn't​​ even my scene when I was that age! We came in for a late Saturday​ lunch and were very pleased. Attentive service, great food everyone liked and priced about the same as the artisan or higher end pizza​ chains. I would normally give this place 3-4 stars. The pizza here, most of the time, is great. My wife and I just went here on a Friday night and left because of poor service. Everything was great until our pizza arrived and it was made incorrectly. The server took the pizza back and came right back with their solution. She said since they only missed one topping on one half they were just going to "fix" that pizza. I was already slightly perturbed that it was being remade since it takes a while for them to come out but I went with it anyway. When the server told us her solution we decided to leave. We weren't fond of the idea of having a twice baked pizza. The server said ok and brought the bill for our salad. There was absolutely no apology or concession for our trouble. If you're looking for authentic Chicago deep dish style pizza, this isn't it. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean the pizza isn't good. It's just not your 4 inch thick amazing deep dish you can get in Chicago. They also have thin crust pizza and if that's your thing then you will probably love it. Truthfully I never had a Chicago style pizza so coming in I didn't really know what to expect; BUT THEY BLEW MY MIND! Piping hot, fresh sauce, loaded with cheese & DELICIOUS toppings..., I could literally never get tired of this! Sauce on top is tricky eating but worth being retrained all over again. Get here at 6pm on a Friday eve. Wasn't too busy. Only a couple large tables taken. Hour later. No pizza. Lot of people have came and went. Then the waitress says that the top oven is out. Tell us that would be a little bit longer. How long? Comes back and says 15 minutes. All the while other people are getting pizza delivered to their table. Doubt I will come back unless they make it right for wasting so much time and not letting people know that the ovens broke and there will be a longer delay on getting food. Ordered 2 chicago hot dogs . After 20 min came out said no relish for them if i still wanted said yes walked accross street to do caseys purchased my own relish. Received hot dogs and both dogs were luke warm . Was offered no compensation or anything just to bad. Only reason I come here is for tge Chicago dog. Understaffed and non caring workers. We ordered the Herbivore Chicago style pizza. It is no where near being Chicago style crust. I am used to the crust being thick and flaky. This is just a normal thin crust pushed into a deep sided pan. No way Chicago style crust. It is tasty and cheesy though. My husband ordered the house salad with Ranch dressing and half way through, realized there wasn't any dressing. This is a great place to go and have a good time! The bathrooms are super clean, the food portions aren't the best. For the prices, you would expect to have a good portion. The Chicago style Grubbs pizza was a joke. No filling - look at the picture- it says it all. The restaurant is cutting corners. I complained to the manager and they took it off our bill which is why I gave them a 1 rating. They won't be getting anymore of our business as long as they are cutting the quality of the pizza. Bad bad bad experience today. Thought we would try Gusano's today for lunch. Being that it's in our neighborhood, we thought we may add it to our rotation for those last-minute I-don't-wanna-cook moments. Sadly, this will never ever ever ever happen. Ordered some honey habanero wings and a couple of Italian beef sandwiches. We were waiting for quite some time, even though the place wasn't super busy. Maybe we stumped the zoo because we ordered sandwiches instead of pizza? Overheard our server tell another table it was her first day. So that explained her awkwardness when she was taking our order. That's okay. However, I do think it was poor management for her to be thrown out on the floor without another server to shadow. Wings come. I don't eat wings because I find them incredibly boring. However, Lucus loves them and he was paying so do whatever you want honey! Lemme tell you. They did not look pretty. They looked like what a raw chicken wing covered in sauce would look like. Terrible visual right? He said they were boiled, not crispy at all. And the skin was flappy and loose. When has anyone ever desired something flappy and loose? You understand. Set aside. Next. The Italian beef sandwiches came out. Kitchen or server got the order wrong so they had to redo. It happens. But when they finally came out, it was just so incredibly unimpressive. The most average roast beef you can imagine. And the giardiniera they serve with it was all green. No carrots, cauliflower, onions. And flavor was really olive-y. Just simply not good. The one-star rating is attributed solely to the bag of Lay's potato chips served with the sandwich. Look, if pizza is your forte, then stick with pizza. Seems like the other reviewers enjoyed their pizza. But our Italian beef sandwiches were designated as a Gusano's favorite, and I'm just very very confused by that. Massive epic fail. I'm born and raised an hour outside of Chicago. And Gusano's deep dish pizza is "Shut-the-front-door" divine. The salads are huge, their moose head pizza is my favorite (besides the deep-dish) And this location's seating is the best. Let's start at the beginning. The waitress acted as if we were bothering her. She brought us our alters (they were out of Dr. Pepper and she did not tell us that until we asked for it) and slammed our cups down on the table. We ordered wings, bread sticks (as the appetizer) and a Chicago style moosehead pizza. Everything came out at once and was not even hot. It took 45 minutes to get to our table, mind you they were not busy at all. We asked for the habanero honey sauce as a side and it taste like franks hot sauce and smelled the same way. Highly disappointed especially after being told what a great place it was and how great the food was. The pizza was nothing but sauce as you can see in the pictures. I've had real Chicago style pizza and this was not it. The manager on duty (Coleman) was no help and just wanted to argue about everything. He offered to take off 10% of the total ticket. Chicago style deep dish pizza review: I give one star for this shameful attempt to copy Chicago's pizza. I was born and raised in the actual city of Chicago and have eaten delicious pizza in my hometown for years. Gusano's however is terrible. The 20 pieces of shredded cheese is barely melted, the sauce is just slopped on, the crust taste undone, and it is not by any stretch of the word deep.
