    Sandy hook sunset

It was spacious and relaxing, clean sand but with wild waves. Rally cute sunsets to enjoy,

Me and my girlfriend truly love this beach we felt so free. We had a great time. The most liberating part of the experience was probably the feeling of being completely free and uninhibited, just embracing the natural surroundings without any judgment. It was so refreshing to let go of any worries and just enjoy the moment absolutely recommend !

My partner and I finally made our first visit this year to the beach. Tucked at the north end of Sandy Hook as part of the federal Gateway National Recreation Area, Gunnison beach looks like any Jersey beach - blankets, chairs, umbrellas, coolers except allows clothing optional /nude though you can still go to it and keep your clothes on. The beach, and a nearby battery mounted with 6-inch "disappearing guns'' completed in 1904 located right next to concession area named after Capt. John Gunnison. At this location, there's a bathhouse with restrooms and changing rooms, outdoor rinse-off showers, soda vending machines, and a concession area. There's a stand where you can rent chairs and umbrellas for a reasonable fee. The water is more than a half mile from the parking lot. Yes, it IS a bit of a long walk. To help beachgoers pick up the pace instead of walking on the loose beach sand, you can walk on an ADA compliant mat for much of the way. Park Rangers patrol (on foot and truck) looking for alcohol as it's prohibited. The beach draws an incredibly eclectic crowd and quite friendly. You will run into people from all walks of life and all ages. There are usually many groups that go there and will set up areas with wind screens that they will setup camp in for the day. Admission is $20.00 per car from Memorial Day to Labor Day. On a clear day, you can see the New York City skyline. The beach itself is great and will definitely be back.

Gawking, leering, forced touching, online harassment, urination, masturbation, and secret photography/video taping are what you can expect here now. It's known, it's obvious, and legally there's little that can be done unless someone is actually assaulted. This is how it was explained by the lifeguards and rangers when I spoke with them directly. There is a group of regulars who discourage going to the police because the beach is in danger of being closed due to these problems. Supposedly no arrests have been made this year due to their intervention, meaning victims aren't coming forward and their harassers aren't facing consequences. Sucks for the nudists who are genuinely good people but clearly this environment is not under control. It's been a steady decline. Two years ago my then boyfriend (6'4, 250lbs) was cornered by a man in the bathroom who forced him to watch him masturbate. This year I was a victim of attempted forced touching/leering/video taping on two separate occasions, and a male friend was harassed/photographed. I'm not going back, and I can't recommend this to anyone who values their safety or privacy. Your gender, size, or the number of people you go with will not protect you. Going on a sleepy weekday doesn't matter - I haven't been on a weekend but I hear it's worse. I took a screen shot of a Yelp user who uploaded a dozen pictures of naked women when I came to post this (I flagged them and all but one has been removed, they were clearly taken without the women's knowledge). Seven months ago, this same user left me a Yelp compliment saying he has "Seen me" at the beach. His review says how great it is that there are "no boundaries" here. People do have boundaries, choosing not to honor them is the reason this place is no longer safe, and this is exactly the type of person who is making it that way. I cannot stress this enough: YOU ARE VERY LIKELY TO BE RECORDED IN SOME WAY AND YOUR IMAGES POSTED ONLINE. This year they prohibited alcohol and smoking in an effort to control the downward spiral. People still get drunk/high but they complain about having to be sly about it. They outlawed certain types of wind screens and umbrellas that can block you from being seen and try to keep people separated so they don't have sex, which people also complain about. What measures are the regulars OK with to stop harassment other than victims just being "cool" about it? It's a shame, but this place has become predatory trash.

They nudity may burn your eyes.

Here are some things to consider: Killer views of NYC skyline, $15 to enter and park (all day pass), there's a food truck, no alcohol, there is a site dedicated to people posting when and where they will be along the beach (sometimes they even post about who they are and what they're looking for), parking at Lot G (Gunnison Beach) fills up quickly on the weekends, it's a 15 minute drive to get to that lot and once you park its another 10-15 minutes just to get past the nude sunbathers sign to find a spot, not the cleanliest (hardly no trash cans on the beach), and you'll probably be approached by multiple people (especially if you're a woman). You know those horrible things (tan lines) you get from wearing bathing suits? Well you can get rid of those here. Clothing-optional? That's what its classified as but lets be real, if you're coming here you won't see many with their clothes on. Must you be a nudist to go to a nude beach? No. Must you be a sexual freak? No. Must you have no inhibitions? Yes! It's an extremely quite beach; eerily quite. Why? Most people are less likely to speak and more likely to gawk. The culture here is just as awkward; leave the beach toys (boogie boards, inflatable devices) at home. We're adults and there are Lifeguards, so why no gear in the water? While people claim oh you won't see sex on the beach....you'll pretty much see as close to it, without the act of. This is surely not for everyone, but ironically you will find just about anyone here.

I enjoyed this beach before it became overcrowded and full of trash, hence the two stars for a time when it was a place for peace, relaxation and freedom to be nude without the same people continuously walking by your towel with their eyes on your jewels...but unfortunately now it's been tainted by people who don't know how to clean up after themselves and can't keep their eyes to themselves. I suggest if you go, arrive before the crowd and by that I suggest going for sunrise. The last time I went I was able to get a free parking pass since I arrived before 7am, not sure if that's still the case but will be worth your while for the peaceful rising sun! Bring a bag and take your trash with you, respect the earth!

I've visited other clothing optional beaches before. But this one felt different and more exciting and more mature.

Place is awesome! No bathing suit required. Only drawback is the long walk in the sand to get to the beach.

Nice, relaxed and comfortable. Go on an overcast day, but I get that the fun is being in the sun more.

Ask the Community - Gunnison Beach

Is there a bath house or changing rooms with a shower to rinse off?

There are outdoor showers at the entrance/exit to the beach and restrooms. Don't believe there are actual changing rooms. You might want to dig around on their website for more information. https://www.nps.gov/gate/index.htm

What is the entrance/ admission fee?

It was free if you go by boat-from nyc and back it was like $30 but if you take your own car you have to pay idk how much.

Are dogs allowed on this beach?

Pedophiles are allowed and frequent it, so I’m sure dogs should be allowed to as well.

Is their a minimum age to get into the beach?

No there is not, but you need a car or to take the ferry there, so it might be hard for a young person to go alone.

What is the best travel option to Gunnison Beach for a person who does not own a car?
