I went there once and will never go back again. Walked around for nearly 20 minutes trying to find someone to help me. I finally found someone who looked like they weren't busy and asked about the instrument I was there to purchase. He told me they don't carry that particular item (despite the fact that they show it on their website) and that he could order one and have it for me next week. Why? I can order from amazon and have it within a day or two. And, they'd deliver it right to my door. I'd never go back there. read more

I dont want to single out this store, because I deal mostly on line. I called to get tracking on an order after 4 days. The guy was rude , condecending , gerneraly unhelpful. I kind of am thinking of returning once I get and buying elsewhere just because of how nasty the experience was. Possibly he hates his job? I dont know but I wish i had never called. You are better off hanging up and calling back if you get the same fellow I did. They need to consider that without customers they have nothing. read more

UPDATE. I started shopping for a new workstation over a year ago and anytime I've been in any of the 3 local stores there have never been any more than 2 or 3 people there. Usually "salespeople" have their nose in a cellphone or are nowhere to be found. I guess they pay the rent on lessons, not sales. However, when I lived in Gaithersburg, the manager of the Rockville store (Brian) was great and someone ALWAYS answered the phone; same with Alex, manager of the Laurel store. Not going to drag a new workstation from Maryland right now though - so I ordered from Sweetwater who is always awesome. They cut me a deal on the workstation WITH the stand, and BONUS, extended the manufacturer's 1 year warranty to 2 years. Brought it to the front door :) . Life is good without aggravation. Really nice staff here. Kudos to the employees passion, of all musical instruments. They've been very helpful, in making adjustments to the guitars over the years. After spending time with their drums yesterday, the neighbors could be in store for a surprise. Really good store here. Their selection of acoustics and electric guitars, is going to be hard to beat. I used to find more deals here. Inflation is a real problem everywhere. They still are a good overall value. You can rest assured, that the staff will always help you out. Do be careful getting back on route 29. This can be a nightmare, but the ability to get guitars and other equipment, it's worth it every time! read more

Could not recommend this location less. Walked in with a Vox AC 30 and a Nashville telecaster hoping to sell. Politely asked the first employee I saw for directions/who to talk to. I did this because at Sam Ashe they have a policy where if you bring in gear to sell, they tag it so that people are not walking around with merchandise. Unfortunately, that is not the policy here at Guitar Center as the man at the front desk looked at me with disdain and rudely exclaimed that he was already with a customer and it should be about 15 minutes and then maybe I should go check another desk to see if they were available. I wasn't asking for his undivided attention. I simply just didn't want to walk around the store with gear in my hands if that's not the policy. I've been going to this Guitar Center for many years. I used to go to high school down the street and would come here to jam. As an adult, I bought and sold a decent amount of gear here and there seems to always be an issue with the staff, cleanliness, or just general vibe of this location. I had a great experience purchasing a Grand piano from Rick Jones pianos. I researched several used piano stores in the Fairfax area and Rick Jones had by far the best reputation.l made and appointment and ended up staying 3 hours playing almost all the grand pianos because no one hed an appointment after me the staff was friendly and avelable to answer questions but never pressured to me to make purchase plan for Buys . I returned a week later with my wife and again spent 2 or 3 hours sure we had found the right piano for us. In between visit, l called another piano store in the area that had a similar piano for sale just to compare prices This store post all of his prices on his website, l had to call the other store to get this information) this store price was more than 10% less. Overall I had a good experience at this Guitar Center location. I could not find a 3' cable, so somebody helped me find it. I appreciated it because it was not with the other cables, so I didn't see it. I bought some guitar knobs and I wanted to screw one on, but they did not have the tool. They said the tech was gone for the day too. It was in the afternoon on a weekday though. I wanted to buy some electric guitar strings and for no reason the employee did not ring them up. They were just left out of the purchase, so I will have to buy them elsewhere. I opened a battery powered amplifier, used one of their cables and tried it with my guitar. I liked it, so I bought it. It was inexpensive. I also bought a whammy bar for my Fender and some picks. read more

ZERO STARS! I agreed to pay for one month of lessons which was 4 total at a half hour. Knowing my child stops and starts many things I said only one month and they had a month discount on 4 lessons. I made it clear I am only paying for one month. Mike Phillips who was doing the lessons sign up was understanding and seemed sincere because I made it clear just 1 month of lessons so 4 total and that is all I agree to pay for. He said I understand and no problem. Well my child only did 2 lessons out of the 4 and they are only half hour lessons. That was in August. So today I get charged $130.00 even thought I was told don't worry. The fact they knew I was going to be charged today and me not knowing that they never once over the last two months let me know or ask via email or phone till the day I was charged I get a voicemail from an unknown number and it's the lessons person just asking "if you need help with your account let me know" and that was after I was charged. Funny not one call EVER saying "Kevin you are going to be charged $130.00 even though you have only done 2 lessons and still have 2 paid for". The only emails they send are ones advertising sales and NO CALL OR EMAIL saying "what you thought was the deal isn't the deal". NEVER 1 call saying "call us let's discuss what's going to happen" even though I was told it wasn't going to happen. Sneaky as usual and the Guitar Center made out because I paid for months lessons at $100 and even bought a guitar another $100 so $200 for an hour of lessons! I wish I made $200 an hour. Who would continue to pay for lessons monthly when they have not even used 2 of the 4 lessons paid for???? No calls no emails saying "you will be charged this on this day if you do not call us or do something". Guitar Center didn't call or email once asking "why haven't you been back for a lesson in two months" are you alive or kidnapped by aliens? They sent an email at 4:30AM saying we're working on your order and then charged me an hour later. Once again the customer isn't right and it's "hurt the hard working tax payer" corporate bull. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR GUITAR LESSONS HERE! You must sign up for a subscription which automatically charges you for 4 classes each month. problem is, when classes are cancelled, rescheduled etc. you continually are charged before the missed classes are made up and when you call to discuss your account you get 59 different people who knows nothing and can't help you. Tia was the worst!! Promising to postpone charges and then a month later when I'm still charged, she miraculously forgot to postpone. My account is $500 in arrears for lessons my daughter never got and when I cancelled they offered me ONE additional lesson to 'make it right'. Super huge store with a variety of quality instruments and musical support items. I play some percussion, still learning, so I checked online beforehand to see what they offer. Decided to go in and check the size, feel, and sound for a few items. They let you browse and play the items. I love going in there and just dream I could play everything. Customer service is polite. They sort of give you your space and if you have questions, they are quite knoledgeable since a lot of the folks that work there are musicians themselves. The store has been remodeled over the past year. Very nice, open layout. read more

While we were there we checked out piano keyboards (I've been coveting one for ages). Wow! a huge selection that bewildered me and Sarah was able to narrow down the features I wanted and explain the pros/cons or each model within our budget. What a great place. They let you freely try out any of their guitars or amps without hovering over you all the time. In addition, they have a very generous 45 day return policy so that there is no risk that you have buyers remorse. Now for an amazing fact. I was shopping for a 12 string guitar but they only had the lowest end model in stock. They told me that I could order several 12 string guitars from their website and have them shipped to their store. When they arrived they said I could come in, play all four of them and decide which to take home and immediately "return" the rest for full refund. This is something they said they've supported many times in the past for other customers. This is amazing to me because experiencing a guitar in person and connecting personally to it is very important in the buying decision. You can't just go off reviews and pictures by others! Their customer friendly policies are at the core of what makes this big box chain thrive and a place that I visit regularly. The world needs more businesses run like this! read more

This is the store where I got my first acoustic guitar ever. I also got my first electric here as well. Purchased my Takamine EAN series acoustic/electric here. Good service. I got it for a good price. Also came to return an ukulele I purchased online. They have a great 30 day return policy. I played the ukulele but I didn't like the sound of it so I returned it and got a cheaper one that sounded even better to me. I'm a fan of Guitar Center. I try to visit if I have spare time just to play some high end guitars. If you're into learning or buying a guitar, go with a friend that's been playing for a while. If you go in here alone, you may end up being intimidated by all the new jargon and metal heads jamming in here. read more

From the time I walked into the store until the time I left I had nothing but a positive experience at this Guitar Center! Claiborne helped me when I first walked in and answered my question professionally. After a few minutes of playing a bass he checked on me by asking me if i was ok. No more no less. He'd make a good waiter! After playing a couple of instruments, I had another question which he answered and attended to with full attention. As he was taking care of two other people. He gave me some good background information on the amps i was interested in researching more. Anyone in the service industry could take a page out of this guys book on how to interact with customers. My satisfaction with Guitar Center locations depends on the sales rep #1 and the selection they have available #2. Honestly, it's hit or miss (5 star versus 1 star) at GC until you find someone who is helpful and knows the products. Like you, I can buy anything online, too. But interacting with quality sales staff and playing the instruments makes the traditional brick & mortar buying experience much better than just looking at photos and buying online. The Fairfax GC has a good selection of guitars, and I found Sarah to be a genuinely helpful & knowledgeable 5 star sales rep. The GC 45 day return policy is generous and eliminates any buyer's remorse. Another tip, like many retail businesses, the Fairfax GC can get crowded on weekends & evenings. Visit weekdays if you can for a better experience and to avoid crowds. read more

With the few dissatisfied customers on this posting for Guitar Center, you have to remember that you could take awesome care of folks and 99 out of 100 will be satisfied and you will never hear from them again until they need you the next time. But that one out of a hundred will tear you up 100% of the time if that customer perceives they didn't get what they wanted which 100% of the time it usually is a ridiculous request anyway...following this? Also, realize these good people at Guitar Center are usually accomplished musicians themselves and know their craft extremely well. And they have to speak to customers at every level and put you with the best choice depending on the customers aptitude. They haul instruments, stock them, deal with banks and financing, returns, rentals, and a gazillion other things and the list is long. I'm dumbfounded. I was a regular GC customer for many years when I lived in Seattle. I lived in Europe for a few years and returned to the East Coast. I orrdered a Markbass bass amp online from GC on a friend's enthusiastic recommendation for both the amp and the store. That was a month ago. The website said it was in stock, but a couple days after my order confirmation, I got another email saying it was backordered. I went on the website and it still said "in stock and ready to ship." A week later, their website still said it was In stock. Every week for the past month in fact the GC website has said it is in stock. So I called them up today to find out what's going on. "Audrey" tells me, "you have to understand, our system sometimes has glitches and it will show something in stock when it isn't, but they just restocked your item today and you should receive it January 9." Huh? No offer to rush it to me, no offer to knock a few bucks off for waiting so long without an update. I even asked for a written confirmation of the January 9 date, nope, she simply re-sent my order notification dated November 30 that promised "delivery 3-5 business days". I expect on January 9 I won't have my amp and will be on the phone with them again. I cannot say that I would recommend GC any more. Really super bummed. I don't know what happened while I was overseas but damn, so disappointing to see a once fine business go bad. read more

Amazing customer service!! I had ordered a guitar during one of Guitar Center's sales, however once I ordered it, I received an email informing me that it was backordered. Since I couldn't wait until it was back in stock, I decided to call the number given in the email. After an unhelpful and frustrating call with a gentleman from the corporate office, I was transferred over to the Fairfax store, where Ariana helped me out. She did an amazing job taking care of my order and went totally above and beyond! She went ahead and found the exact guitar at one of the other locations and ordered it to her store, where I conveniently picked it up. I was also helped by Greg, who was very funny and kind, since Ariana wasn't working at the time I picked it up. A lousy customer service experience here today. I went in to buy an amp and ended up walking out completely irritated and without an amp. First, nobody helped me, I started playing and there was no greeting, no assistance, nothing. Not even a "hey, let me know if you have questions or if I can help". I then got a sales associate to help me and he said he didn't know anything about that amp and offered no help or sought someone else in the store who might be able to help. It's not your job to know every amp and guitar in the store but it is your job to find out or say "let's research it together" and make the customer feel confident. Then, I said I would buy it and there was no "great purchase, you'll be happy, thanks for your business" There was nothing, it was just lethargic mumbling from a guy who clearly didn't care. Then the manager started ringing me out and he too was dull, no smiles, no positivity and couldn't say much about the amp I was buying anyway and was fairly condescending about the questions I was asking, he seemed annoyed. So, I then said "I'm pretty irritated with the customer service here" and explained why, he didn't apologize or try to remedy the fact that I was leaving the store without buying an amp. So frustrated right now! I was at this store yesterday, buying a Pearl Roadshow complete drum set. I just got finished unpacking the 3 boxes I was given, only to find that they did not give me any of the cymbals that are supposed to come with it! Now I'm going to have to drive out of my way once again, after work, and fight with them over this. I'm not looking forward to this at all. The guy helping me seemed so lost and disorganized the whole time. The packages are so massive, am I expected to open everything on site before I leave? Can't say for all guitar centers, but the one is Fairfax is one to avoid. They seldom answer the phone. When they do they send you to a department that seldom answers the phone. On the rare occasion they do, they don't have common items in stock, "but we can order it for you." I can order those things from anywhere, I call a brick and mortar store to pick them up that day. read more

I used their comprehensive repair services for a quick adjustment and complete overhaul for my acoustic guitar. Staff is well trained. I also took their guitar group class for free. Went to this location with 100 percent intent to buy the Ibanez SR1300E four string ($1,099), or better -- the Guitar Center at Seven Corners had sold its model. I WAS going to leave this store with a quality bass in hand, and was willing to spend thousands if something else was meant to be. I entered the store. There were at least five or six salespeople on the floor or behind the two main counters on the way to the basses. The guitar repair guy was working his table next to the bass section. One associate was helping a customer at the first counter, everyone else was talking among themselves. Not one person greeted me or even looked at me. In the 30 minutes that I was there -- slowly inspecting all of the high-hanging Ps, Music Man and other $2,000 basses -- my presence was not enough to catch the eye of ANY salesperson. The lone SR1300E was hanging within reach (left corner), I grabbed it and found an amp to plug into. Still, not one sales associate. This 1300 clearly wasn't set up -- the action was terrible and the magic just wasn't there, unlike the SR I tested at Seven Corners GC two months earlier that was simply glorious. Perhaps I could have been convinced to buy this bass had someone talked to me, and told me the store's policy on setups. Or they could have seized that opportunity to recommend something top of the line -- as I was ready to wheel and deal. Since the store's customer service was non-existent, so too was my non-existent purchase. Definitely will never again waste my time with this location. read more

I ran in to get a gift card, easy enough you would think. But the customer service was terrible. There was only one person who was checking out before me, but four employees were standing in the checkout area staring at the screen of the cashier. When I asked for help, I was told to wait. However, during that time they were still answering the phones and talking to each other while I (and another customer) were waiting to be helped. I understand being shorthanded, that happens. But why does it take four people to check one person out and answer phones, when you have other customers standing in line waiting. Fortunately after about 5-8 minutes, Lizzie came over and asked if she could help and it took less than a minute to check me out. read more
