Guitar Center brings the economy of a mega retailer to your neighborhood with a really knowledgeable staff to help direct you when you aren't sure and support you when you know what you want, just need to get the right part. I have been here many times and their selection, price and local expertise that really enjoy what they do can't be matched in my opinion. I took and subsequently canceled lessons with guitar center. After cancelling, I was billed again for $230. It has been six weeks and nobody at the store level can reverse a charge they agree is unauthorized. The only thing the lessons manager or store manager is willing to do is email the district supervisor for instructions. We've been waiting for the district manager to reply to their email for nine days. They refuse to email the credit card company on my behalf. They also refuse to email corporate again and CC me for my records. read more

Update: I emailed their customer service as suggested in their reply. They forwarded my email to the store manager, who was part of the initial problem, and said the store would be in touch. They never reached out. I won't do business here again. I can fill my musical needs at Sweetwater or through Reverb without being talked down to and hanged up on. Thanks anyway. The equipment was flawed, but the service was the real joke. First, it's silly that you can't reserve rentals from a place when renting equipment for important events like weddings, but that's the least of our problems. I set up the PA for rehearsal. I have experience, and I had a friend who runs sound on FaceTime (we knew what we were doing). I was glad I'd paid for the insurance. The speakers were banged up and every piece had missing or broken parts. No big deal if it functioned, but there was no acknowledgement of the equipment's condition at the time of rental. Without insurance, they could've blamed me for the damages and charged for the price of new equipment. There was no power cable for the subwoofer. I called the store and was told "the best we can do is give you a power cable if you come back to the store," so I made the 2-hour round trip. Finally set up, sound was staticky and cutting out and vocals were not playing at all. We worked late into the night and eventually got it working enough. The input on one speaker must've been causing issues because it was better when we used the input of second speaker. The vocals began working, but none of us understood why. We played music before the wedding with vocals, it worked. There was some static during the ceremony, but it wasn't awful. For their first dance, the music cracked and popped, and no vocals. We halted to fix the PA, again. We checked each connection, tried different devices to play the music, swapped cables. We finally used a small speaker someone had in their car, played the music through that speaker, and put the microphone in front of that speaker. It got us by, but it took a lot of troubleshooting mid-wedding, and we should not have had to rig the equipment to get a half-working system. My mom returned it next day. I suggested she ask for a discount and let them know about the issues before they rent it out again. She called me from the store and put me on with the manager, Hunter, who said they would test the equipment. If it worked, there was nothing he could do. I suggested they keep testing if it worked at first. It worked some times, just not when it counted. They called back 10-15 minutes later. The equipment was working, so the problem must've been us, maybe the device we used to play music or the cable. I re-explained that we'd tried different cables and devices, and I reminded him that it worked sometimes, just not consistently. He said, "well, it's working now, so there's nothing we can do." I asked for another manager, and Hunter said he is the manager. I asked if he had a supervisor and he said there was a store manager, Ryan, who would tell me the same thing. He said "it's your word against mine and I'm the one testing the equipment, so we all know how that's gonna go." I asked when Ryan worked so I could speak with him. Hunter laughed and told me Ryan was there, but I needed to call the store if I wanted to talk to him. He was not going to pass the phone over. I did that. Ryan was clearly annoyed, assured me that the problems we had with the PA were my fault, that they tested it and there was nothing wrong with the equipment. He told me that he had already approved a partial refund because we were upset, but he made sure I knew this was a "customer service refund" because we were unhappy, not a refund-refund, because they hadn't done anything wrong. (The refund they gave barely covered the gas for that round trip for a power cord, which they just didn't think was an issue.) The entire thing was bizarre and infuriating. I expected a brief conversation about the issues we had, maybe a partial refund for the equipment or at least an apology for not including all the equipment and all of the trouble, and for them to take a look before renting it out again. Instead, they were immediately defensive and treated me like a scam artist-- a little bro club, proud and righteous that they held their ground. It was gross. read more

The employee I worked with endlessly and relentlessly berated me for not purchasing a protection plan for the cymbal. It started with ... "and your getting the protection plan of course" and evolved into a demeaning lecture about how cymbals break and it was really a bad idea not to get it. And from there it just got worse.. he kept on bringing it up over and over (I was very clear from the start I did not want it) and he just got increasingly rude and by the end of it all, he treated me like I had walked in and tried to steal it. I've always been skeptical of big box music stores but recently I have stopped by this guitar center location and found them to be really helpful and friendly. The store was very busy and they had a lot of inventory. Prices are on par with everywhere else. A ton of employees were working and I didn't have any trouble finding someone to help me or answer questions. I am returning to playing music after a 30 year break and switching to a new instrument so I plan to check out their lessons. I'll update the review when this happens. This GC really takes care of the customer with respect and going the extra mile. They are knowledgeable and have great inventory. In my case, I needed a few pedals ordered for other stores. They got on the telephone right in front of me and found what I needed. Exchange is no hassle at all. Jimmy, Brian (Elvis) and Toby need mentioning. With this Covid-19, they remain cheerful and GC is lucky to have great sales representatives as well as musicians on their staff. Really great guys. and, so is the rest of the staff by observation. I haven't tried the Tech yet; however, I had a good conversation and also watched him working and he looks like another staff member that know his stuff. Great store. My fiancé bought a guitar. I paid for the tuner and the warranties for the tuner and guitar. They couldn't give it back in cash, only a check or back on my card. I chose back on my card. I was led to believe that the price would go onto my card. We went to a atm so my fiancé could get his cash from my card. We thought the refund would be on my card and in my account. I check my account and guess what my account was over drawn. I called Guitar Center and told them my problem. I was quite upset. I was told it would take a couple of business days. Why didn't it go in automatically? Why didn't "Elvis" tell us this? Now I will have overdrawn fees. I'm pissed. read more

Avoid this GC location at all costs. All the negative reviews should have warned me. Called GC and they said "Clackamas has the amp you want in stock". Went in to buy the amp, and the sales person told me they were having an "in house sale" and quoted me a pice for the amp and confirmed it was in stock. Waited around 20 minutes for them to to find the amp. Salesman finally showed up and said the amp was MIA, but not to worry, they would order the amp and honor the quoted price. I said OK. I waited around 20 more minutes for him to order the amp, only for him to return and say he couldn't honor the price he quoted me. Whole Saturday morning wasted on this sloppy operation, and they wouldn't even honor the price they quote to order the amp. Avoid this GC location at all costs. The parent company of this location should take note of all the negative reviews about this location. I've been a GC customer for over 20 years. This will be my last interaction with them read more

My son and I were just in there looking for a new guitar for him . He has been playing guitar for a year and rips. We were looking to step up his game and sound however not 1 employee came up, greeted us or asked if we needed help. Very disappointing. Yet another place I hate to love, but I love the hell out of Guitar Center. Great deals can be found in every corner. Most mom and pop places can't beat their prices, especially with things like strings. I've been to the Beaverton store, but this one is MUCH better. This one just has a better flow, and the staff is much more helpful. It reminds me of my favorite Guitar Center in Concord, CA. The one improvement I wish they'd make is the guitar wall. Its one big jumbled mess. I wish they had the wall organized by brand. There is SOME organization... like the PRS' are on their own wall, but every thing else is just put where there is an open space. It makes it hard to really absorb the guitar porn, and find a specific guitar if you are looking for one. Maybe I just like things more structured then most, and others don't feel this way. I went in three times in the last year, and this has to be the worst kept guitar center I have ever been to. The drum room is an actual fire/ tripping hazard as the floor is just boxes and boxes of unpacked stuff. Nobody came to help me find what I was looking for, and I'm surprised I was able to rummage through all of the mess to actually find moon gel. They only had one E kit for customers to try, the rest were un plugged but still taking up more room on the already cluttered floor. To top it all off, I went to the bathroom the last time and the Toilet was not secured to ground. It kept rocking back and forth. I will be driving out of my way to go to the Portland one from now on. It is always pristine. read more

This store has a nice selection of guitars and bass guitars etc.. most of the time. A while back, I took my 30 year old bass there to get cleaned up, and serviced, the tech that I spoke with was knowledgeable and seemed to be listening to when I stressed to him that of the neck needed any adjustment, that it could not be done like the standard Fenders, and that the neck would have to be removed. I must have said this 4-5 times as I didn't want the paint damaged. He assured me that he would hills the instructions. When I picked up my bass, no one was able to help me In the tech dept. A person from the register had to get my bass. On opening it, I find that the paint where the neck meets the body to have been chipped. It was obvious that someone tried to adjust the neck without removing the neck(like I told him would need to be done), I was angry, but had to wait a couple of days to be able to speak to the tech. When I brought the bass back, he really didn't have an explanation. He offered to paint a black "shadow around the neck" to cover the chip. I started to become angry again, and suggested that he figure out how to match the paint. At this point I probably should have gotten management involved, but chose to try and work it out with the tech. What k got back was a poor attempt at filling in the chipped paint that doesn't match. I'll never take another guitar there to be worked on, but I'll still make purchases for strings etc there. The staff in the past has been helpful, and polite. read more

I called an asked what digital pianos they had in stock in the $1,000 to $1800 range. They told about a few that sounded great. I told them I would be in the store in about an hour to check them out. I drove 30mins to get to Guitar Center and waited for 15 minutes for someone to help me, only to learn that they didn't have any of the ones I was interested in checking out on the floor. Only in boxes in the back. I responded, "That is exactly why I called ahead!". and then I walked out. I was going to buy a digital piano, a track recorder and a $1,000 acoustic guitar. Today Guitar Center lost at least $3k in what should have been a quick and easy sale. Guitar Center will now be my store of VERY LAST resort. They wasted 90 minutes of my day. I'm going to buy the piano at Classic Pianos in SE Portland this afternoon and will find a different store to buy the other things I need. Be ware the time suck that Guitar Center is. read more

I'm rating the same as the others - 4 stars. I've come here on occasion when I'm in the area. Only have bought one guitar here before. The selection is only ok. They have mostly Gibsons and Fenders. Several Gretsch and Rickenbackers. Lots of Epiphone and Squiers. The staff has always been super nice and helpful. I like that they let you browse at your will and don't talk to you much unless you need help. The amp selection could be better. They have mostly Fenders and Vox. I was surprised that they don't carry the great little amp called Vox 15R, probably the best practice amp out there for the money. One time I was in here and a couple of their registers were broke and I had to wait awhile to get service but other than that's it's a fun place to go if you want to try out some guitars or other musical equipment. The only rare/oddball guitar I've seen here was a 1960's Kawaii MIJ priced at $120. Wish they carried more stuff like that or old American stuff from the 1950's/1960's in general and old used amps. Gonna try to stop in today 'cause I'm looking for an acoustic. (Oh, I think it's funny that they have a large Johnny Lang picture on the front of this place. He's wonderful but I don't think anyone really knows him anymore. He was big in the mid-90's. Saw him once during that period on a daytime TV chat show playing with Buddy Guy! I have been a happy and loyal customer for a decade, both for purchasing guitars and getting them repaired. This week, I am very disappointed and pissed off. I dropped off my guitar last Saturday just to get new strings put on it - very simple. My husband was told that the guitar would be ready in two days, which was pretty usual for the work. He said I'd get a call when I could come pick it up. Well, today is the following Friday. No call from anyone. I just called and was told that my guitar is not ready; in fact, it hasn't even been worked on. I was given a lot of excuses and justifications and when I suggested that they should have called me to let me know days ago that my guitar would not be ready for tonight (I have an every-Friday-evening gig), the guy I spoke to gave me more excuses that they are too busy to even do that. This is ridiculous and non-professional. If they want return business, it is definitely worth their time to have someone call or text customers to let us know that we cannot count on our instruments being returned to us in any sort of timely manner. read more

It's cool, but my advice would be to ask for someone who knows the instrument you are interested in. I recently took advantage of their President's Day sale to grab a couple of sweet pieces of gear. Toby in the guitars department was very helpful in my decision. Toby set up the amps and brought me the guitars I was interested in so that I could take my time trying them out. Also, I had a long conversation with another employee there (don't know the name, unfortunately. Tall, slender guy). This guy basically gave me a 15-minute masterclass on Les Paul's. He answered all my questions and more about the guitar I was looking at. Now I understand why some American Les Paul's are $5,000 and some are $800. It's not necessarily because they sound better. Anyways, that was great. After that, I was fully confident in my decision and came back the next day to pull the trigger. read more

The store itself is a fun place to spend some time. Wander the aisles, play the equipment, listen to other people play who have talent greater than mine. But heaven forbid you need customer service. Most of the time I enter the store I am not even acknowledged. One time I spent over an hour there and left without a single employee saying a word to me. I was in this last weekend and made a purchase around $800. I asked about the store credit card, and the employee didn't know much about it, he thought that maybe you earned points on purchases at certain times during the month (it's a little different, according to the website). One employee 'had to check' to find out if the return policy for clearance items was the same as for regular purchases (she reported that it was). I think I should have purchased else where, but they've got a 45 day return policy, so maybe I will. read more

Didn't know why I'd get a call from here as I have never been here. Got a voicemail from the caller as I didn't answer. Called back and got a guy who answers and was very rude. Told him I was just returning the call and voicemail I got and he got all upset with me about it. Tells me what kind of store he runs and this would never happen. Well I'm not making it up. But I can tell you this. If I ever did have a use for a store like this. This place would not be it. Customer sever has went down the drain these days. Do not bother trying to have work done here. We dropped my husband's guitar off for a nut and saddle replacement. There was only one service tech available trying to do work and help people with drop-offs, and it was really clear that customer service was not his strength. He made it clear it was his last day there. The drop off process took forever and the guy had to stop to answer a phone call about a guitar that wasn't ready yet. I should have read the situation and just walked away. SMH Two weeks later, I call in to find out what is up. I'm told there are staffing issues and they are backlogged. I asked if I could at least know what timeline we are looking at, and I was told that the tech would call me. No call. So my husband called, and was told "we haven't started it yet - we will call you." We are about to go out of town and my husband wanted to take the guitar so he decided to cut his losses so to speak and just pick it up. No apologies from the staff or offer of a timeline that it could be completed in. They brought his guitar out in its soft case except now it is filthy. To get a little value out of the visit, my husband decided to wander the store and let our preschooler look at the instruments (so he put the guitar on his back). While they were checking out the instruments, my husband was confronted and told by a man that that it was suspicious that he had been walking around "his store" with the guitar case on his back and they needed to check him for stolen merchandise. We understand that they need to watch out for theft, but the attitude and disrespect thrown at my husband was totally inappropriate. They need to save the accusatory tone for after they confirm you've stolen something. Once they opened his guitar case, it revealed that the guitar strings had been taken off by the techs and the new parts were taped on the guitar, but apparently that is when they decided to move on to something else. When the accusatory staff member saw the stringless guitar/parts, he apologized and took the guitar back to the techs (seemingly to yell at them) before my husband could explain the story (that he was done with the techs and just wanted to take it home). At that point my husband was about to blow up and didn't want to lose his $#&@ in front of the kiddo, so he just left. They still have the guitar, and we still have no clue when it will be done. read more

I love going to this place! There are so many musical "toys" to play with. Though the last time I was here they took my drum sticks away, and I wasn't being obnoxious or anything! The best thing about this place are the prices. The instruments are a 1/4 of the price of any of the other music stores in Portland. I hate buying my stuff here because I feel like this is the Walmart of music stores, BUT their stuff is so cheap! As expensive as musical instruments and equipment is, I can't afford NOT to shop here. There is something here for every musician; DJ's to drummers, they have everything! Also, Guitar Center will try to beat or match any music store's prices, even online stores. The staff is very knowledgeable, they have "pros" in every department. I had problems with some software to record with, and the guys in the tech department were a huge help in getting me all lined up right. read more

Spent half an hour on the phone while the drum counter guy searched for a used cymbal that was supposed to be in stock. He couldn't find it so he told me he would waive the shipping charges and get me the same cymbal from another store. Someone eventually found the missing cymbal in the store but it wasn't correctly entered into their computer, so it was a different cymbal than the one I wanted. He still offered to have the cymbal I wanted delivered from another store for free. When the drum counter guy asked his manager to waive the shipping charges, the manager said no. I canceled my purchase. Half hour of my life I'll never get back. When an employee makes a promise, and you then renege on this promise, customers will question your integrity about other products or services. You should have honored the promise. Now you lost this sale, and my future business. Two stars because I've had other positive experiences here; but one bad experience, especially involving trust and integrity, negates my previous experiences. read more
