I'll start this review by saying I'm really pretty impulsive. I woke up on Sunday to the most gorgeous weather I've seen in weeks and decided that I needed...NEEDED...a wooden flute. My partner plays acoustic bass and to me, it was the most perfect weather for low-key jammin'. So I called four different music stores and no one had wooden flutes, so in simply googling PORTLAND WOODEN FLUTES, Cedar Mountain came up. We didn't call first and just rolled up and they were closed, but had a number on the door. I called and the guy lives above the shop and HE CAME DOWNSTAIRS TO HELP US. I was so freaking thrilled I couldn't even. I bought the most beautiful native flute I've ever heard in real life (which hasn't been many). The guy was super knowledgeable and the shop had SO much amazing stuff in it, I can't wait to upgrade my flute once I exceed a novice ability. read more

I love Cedar Mountain Drums, and I love my drum. Whenever I need tools for healing, I enjoy getting them from here and supporting them. Patrick holds drum circles upstairs and they are so well held. I was looking for Irish whistles, of all things, and was directed to this place by a used instrument store guy. I found the store easily, and upon entering, loved being surrounded by so many beautiful handcrafted drums, mainly Native American, and some African and other. They have a fabulous selection in all sizes, of Native American flutes, from the most expensive and decorative to student models and plastic ones. The people were helpful and very friendly. They did indeed, have a few Irish whistles, but not what I was seeking--still, I really enjoyed my visit to this gem of a store. read more

I ordered a small drum with a wrapped handle from Patrick and it arrived very quickly. I was able to pick the size and hide I wanted. The drum is only 10" yet has a deep and resonant sound. I also ordered soft beater which is very well made and comfortable to use. Both items are so lovely and a very reasonable price. This is a drum lovers dream shop. I was there with a friend, who was buying a drum for her granddaughter and we had lots and lots of choices. The owner of the shop, Patrick and his son were very helpful and informative. If you need a drum, pound no further. Go here. Just make sure and call ahead first to make sure they are open, then ring the bell when you get there. They lock the front door during business hours due to being robbed a few years back. They are there and will open the door immediantly. read more

I was excited to realize that I had moved to the city that I had been buying mail order drum kits and medicine from for many years. I had no idea that it was so small in a little basement, but it is packed full of musical and spiritual goodness. This is the only place I will buy a drum from, great prices if you want to be creative and put it together yourself. I think from what I have observed from Cedar Mountain Drums that this is a very unwelcoming place. The owner is just a wannabe Native American, Who has maybe 1 percent real Native American blood in them. I have in my experience of coming seen actual native Americans coming to the drum shop, looking very confused, Thinking that this is a horrible place. I agree completely with them. I find the owner of the shop, Patrick, A very 'Disturbing' person, giving me bad vibes as well as the shop itself. Overall I think that you should not go to this shop if you are looking for a welcoming atmosphere, And that the owner of this drum shop may not be as nice as you think he may be by the vibes I am getting from his workers. read more

As a Diné woman who is living far away from her homeland in the southwest, I was delighted to find out about this store. I hurriedly went to check it out; however, my interaction with the store owner was rather unpleasant. During our brief conversation, he was extremely patronizing and assuming about my cultural background. While he white/mansplained to me, I gazed around his store and wondered how much of it was just culturally appropriated. Based on research that I did, his Native ancestry is dubious at best. For those looking for Indigenous supplies or just wanting to learn more about Native culture in general, I would suggest finding a more authentic source and staying away from this wannabe shaman. read more

What a random little stop we made today to this drum store. You won't find Zildjian or pearl or any of the brand names here, but mostly cultural drums made of natural materials. I was hesitant to go in at first because we just wanted to look and play, and the door was locked. There was a sign saying ring bell for service, so we did. The lady who answered erased all my doubts about going in to just play around, she encouraged my 2 year old to come in and bang on all the drums (this is very exciting for a 2 year old, it kind of made her day!). I enjoyed seeing and playing with everything so much I felt like I wanted to buy something to support this business. I bought my daughter a $10 tambourine, made of natural hide. I thought it was a great price, because I could go to the toystore down the street and get a plastic one and it would have cost the same thing. The lady mentioned a women's drum circle they have there, not sure if that's my thing but it sure would be interesting! I may go back and buy my daughter a set of bongos, she loves music and I'd much rather go there and get the real thing than the cheap fisher price version. read more
