This support is strongly shown, with a reopening in 2014 as an integrated park space with a community garden and events meant for city residents. It is named after the street it is located on, which was named for John Mandell (a prominent local businessman who played a large role in the development of the area). I had a chance to walk through it during my visit to Houston and found it to be a well-maintained (healthy trees, grass cut, no animal waste, clean benches) public area.

It's not as calm and tranquil as I had initially expected, but the park is good for a casual stroll. This one will only take a few minutes to walk through, but it features a nice garden (Meredith Gardens) and a small plot of land dedicated to the OG Houston ecosystem - the coastal prairie. Believe it or not, the native ecosystem for most of Houston consisted of fields of tall grass interspersed with the occasional oak tree. No palm trees or concrete roads in sight. The Mandell Prairie is a small for local wildlife. We greatly appreciate the efforts thr Mandell Prairie makes to provide a small habitat for local wildlife! This park is run by a group of volunteers. Thank you to the Friends of Mandell Park for keeping the park clean and open to the public! There is plenty of free parking is available on Bonnie Brae St.

So was Plant-It farms, and the Amir project there also. I knew well, what the heck I already garden and wanted to play in the yard, so why not help out build a garden. Also, I'm a Toyota fan. When the day came, I actually didn't know where the club would be, but as everybody knows Google maps likes to give you the run around when it comes to directions, so better believe I got lost. I finally arrived to volunteer and noticed there was a lot of high school teens and one adult to help. I said to myself, oh, no what did I get myself into. However, I blew it off and considered this is for the garden and this community. Oh man and wasn't the yard covered in all kinds of weeds, muddy waters, ants, and wildlife. I'm glad I wasn't the squeamish type, but there sure where a bunch of immature teenagers out there. I soon meet another college student like me, she didn't attend SJC, but PVAMU. Very cool chick, we both had teamwork which made pulling weeds a lot easier. I was glad to find out she's a Yelper as well. It took us 4 hours to completely clean the lot of debris. As we worked, I kept eyeballing this guy that looked familiar from the TV, it was the actor, Lance Gross and working right next to me it was a NFL football player. I'm glad I held my posture with these famous people, but some students couldn't hold themselves. Lots of them took "selfies" with them, but I didn't because it's not my style. There was even live videotaping of us clearing the garden, I got videotaped a couple of times since the photographer kept on getting in my face. No biggs. I was working hard out there and got extremely muddy, but I was having lots of fun. Some students especially PVAMU got to be interviewed. These people weren't too excited to find out that I attended SJC, a community and junior college that barely anybody knows about..whatever. I love SJC and I don't care what anybody thinks. All that hard work didn't go without a meal, free t-shirt and a certificate to show we planted it forward. Sandwiches catered from the Whole Foods Market, they were delicious and came with a kettle chip bag and a cookie. Yummy meal. Such a grand opportunity to be apart of. If you are interested in volunteering in Houston, go to Volunteer Houston website (Google search it) and there's are vast opportunities out there waiting to be filled. Now, I can come back to see our babies grow and harvest. By the way, if you are coming from the Southside, take Telephone Rd or Almeda Genoa, turn on E Orem, drive past the FedEx distribution until you get to MLK then turn a right, go past the church I grew up in Evangelist Temple COGIC and take a left on Selinskey you will past a few abandoned apartments that used to be there, but I don't know what happened to them, and the club should be there on the right. Just look for a blue and white checkered building. Now, the area isn't the best, but what area where minorities live in Houston is?! The parking lot is plenty and isn't filled with potholes.

Bring your children to visit the animals that are located in the back. Fresh goat cheese? They got it along with Goat yogurt, flower bouquets, fresh eggs, and all the goodies you can find at a farmers market. The owner is John, and we came across this place while taking a drive. My husband loves callalou (spinach like green popular in Jamaica) and he spotted it in the farm, came over and John greeted him very kindly. Although it was closed John invited my husband in to look around. So the next time you are in Galveston pay them a visit. You'll be glad you did.
