Funny name of this liquor store in Ashtabula. Grumpy Grandpa's has lots of booze. It also has lots of local weirdos. Bad feeling about this place but it turned out okay. They have a good selection of okay priced beer and liquor. All kinds of things to get drunk on here. It has a great selection of local products. There's stuff from Great Lakes Brewery and a lot of other local breweries too. Best stuff to buy here though is the liquor. Prices are okay but higher compared to many other places. It's about $12 for a cheaper bottle of whiskey for example. They have so much to choose from. It also seems like it's very clean. It always has a mop out for them to clean up a mess. Prices are a bit on the high side, and the place seems to be staffed by a bunch of young girls. Last time I went, I had my 15-year old stepdaughter with me, and the cashier demanded ID from my stepdaughter before I could purchase a bottle of scotch. Since my daughter has no driver's license, there was little I could do. Next to me in line, there was a mother with 3-4 children under the age of ten, but when I asked the cashier about them, she replied, "You have to be the parent or guardian." I asked when it became the law to demand ID from non-paying customers and another young girl chimed in with, "It's always been that way." Sadly, it doesn't seem to be that way anywhere OTHER than Grumpy Grandpa's, not even in the line next to me. When I told the cashier that I was my stepdaughter's guardian, she asked me two times more if it was true, then rang up the order. She didn't require any proof, and I just didn't understand the point to all the hassle and the false claims about state law. The liquor was not being handed to, sold to, or imbibed by my stepdaughter, so the invocation of state law was just unfounded arrogance. Sadly, I won't return.
