Every time we are in Gruene (which is a lot), we hit up the general store. It's just packed with nostalgia and definitely has the vibe of an old west cowboy town. I like that it is literally a general store, you know, like in the old days, where you went to one small shop for all of your needs. The store has everything from collectibles and souvenirs to arts & craft items, children's toys & games, novelty items, gifts, clothing, candles, holiday decor, yard decor, and so on. They carry a wide selection of treats, including old-fashioned candy like flavored candy sticks, modern candy bars, sodas, fudge, and ice cream. OMFudge!! Some of the best ever! You can also get pickles, jams, and salsas. I always like picking up a few of these items to take home as well as to send to family on the East Coast. The ice cream is a wonderful treat on a hot summer day in Gruene. The ice cream area, kind of like an old school counter set up is adorbs. Everything here just makes me feel like I'm in an old cowboy movie. It gets pretty busy during peak times but I have to say the staff are fast & friendly and don't make customers feel rushed. read more

I like coming here because it's like stepping back in time. I think the wall of jarred goods is a huge draw... we did enjoy the jar of hot pickles and cinnamon pear preserves that we picked up. There's a lot to wander around and see, but it can be elbow to elbow when busy so you might have to exercise some caution as you navigate the shop. After visiting the Gruene Market (3rd Saturday of the month), my dad and I ventured through town and popped into the general store. This was such a cute little store that had a wide variety of goods. Not only did they have some fun t-shirts but they also had knickknacks, candy, fudge, ice cream and more. We decided to get a t-shirt as well as try a few of their fudges. I also think their prices were very fair compared to some of the other in-town little stores. From the fudge counter, we tried the Chewy Praline, Orange Creamsicle, Vanilla Cheesecake and Chocolate Caramel Cracker. The vanilla cheesecake fudge was definitely the best but all were tasty. The people behind the counter were very friendly and this was a fun place to visit. I'd definitely stop in next time I was in Gruene. read more

Gruene General Store in Gruene, TX, is a neat little place to visit when you're in town. It is packed with so many cool souvenirs and knick knacks. If you're looking for that something special or different, they probably have it... you just need to look for it and hope you'll find it or just ask them. You could easily spend a couple hours in here. Just be warned that the aisles in the store are very tight. When they get busy, they get really busy and there's barely room to walk through. Please be mindful... there may be a lot of scooting back to front and vice versa to allow people to get through. I don't know how they pack all that stuff in here. They even have an ice cream parlor LOL. I didn't get a chance to try their ice cream, but wished I did... I'm a big ice cream fan! I'm a magnet collector so that was my primary goal while I was in this store. Unfortunately, their magnet collection wasn't that great, but I did end up getting a few magnets. I also picked up a cowboy hat for one of my brothers. He wanted a souvenir straight from Texas. Cowboy hats from Texas are not cheap... if I recall, it was about $45+, but that's okay... as long as we look good and are styling in it, that's all that matters... we only live once, right? Staff was really nice. I asked them about their exchange policy on the hat since my brother wasn't here to try it on. They said we can exchange it should it not fit... we just need to send it back and they'll send us a different size. Prices were okay. Don't just think this is a general store. It's more like a specialty store IMHO. When you're traveling through or staying nearby Gruene, do swing on by and check this place out. You won't regret it. If you don't buy anything material, at least get some ice cream! Have an extra scoop for me... thank you! P.S. The Gruene General Store is in a great location, right in the heart of Gruene, and so it's a great stop if you're walking around. They sell fudge, candy, pickles, t-shirts, jams, magnets, etc. - a lot of miscellaneous souvenirs from your trip. I'd be in years before, but on a drive from San Antonio to Dallas, my brother and I stopped in a few Texas Hill Country towns to explore a bit and stretch our legs. I enjoyed stopping in and shopping at Gruene General Store. Definitely a fun place to stop and shop if you're in town! read more

I was happy to see the Gruene touristy stuff and Texas items in case you're from out of town. I'm a magnet collector and have the hardest time finding magnets anymore but was able to find a cute one to had to my collection here. I will say, staff was not the friendliest. It honestly looked like those two girls hated their jobs and were very short with everyone. The one working the ice cream counter rolled her eyes at the customers she was helping multiple times which put a bad taste in my mouth. As a bonus though, for people who care, they have one bathroom and it was really clean. You could also use it without buying anything, which was nice. read more

Located in the heart of Gruene, they sell just about everything. Lots of junk here and you will end up wanting to buy everything. And if you have kids it will be tough leaving without a book or small toy or ice cream as they have a pretty nice bluebell ice cream bar inside too. Is it touristy? Yup. Is it still a must stop when visiting charming historic downtown Gruene? Heck yeah. Don't let the crowd outside the door fool you - they're just hanging out, chatting and eating ice cream or sipping cold beer (walking open contsiner okay in this small town) at the General Store. Yes, the store is always crowded; however, you can easily make your way through. If you want "Texas" or local goods this is one stop shopping. All the Lone Star state edibles you can ask for (e.g., pickles, dip mixes, jerky, Butt Rub [yes, that's a thing], hot sauces, and more). And theeeeen, cowboy hats, Texas flag flip flops, Christmas ornaments (year round), jewelry, amusing signs, etc. If you can think of it, they probably have it. I've been to Gruene before but didn't go into the general store and I am so glad I visited it on this quick trip though the town. It's beautifully decorated, has a small but very cute snack/desert bar right when you walk in. Awesome classic candy and old toys and games. They also had some really great Christmas ornaments and my mom is an avid Santa ornament collector and I found a really cute one! It's a great store to walk in and walk around for a while so you can really look at everything on the shelves. The store itself is crowded and congested but it has some really neat novelty items including a tantalizing variety of coffee, peanut butters, hot sauces, and jams. (Jalapeno peanut butter, are you serious? Yes. I am.) There's a really cute soda fountain towards the entrance with bar stools. It kinda feels like you stepped back in time. I really just had difficulty getting past the congestion. It was hot, there were too many people, and moving around was a tad difficult. You'll never know what you'll find though. Novelty candy cigarettes, old school ring pop flavors, grow-a-girlfriend dolls, and hot dog socks, just to name the eclectic selection of items and trinkets you'll find here. read more

On our summer vacation to visit family, we went to Gruene to eat at the Gristmill. I wanted to look around this historic town and stepped into the General store. Though this town is very "touristy" oriented, it is pretty interesting. But be prepared for a crowd of people. The Store is designed to look like an "old Time" general store, and it does, but it is filled with tourist chotchkeys and T-Shirts. It also has local jams, jellies, and candies. There isn't much room to move around, and if there is a lot of people in there, it can get frustrating to make your way through. You need to be patient and not in a hurry. The staff is very friendly. I do recommend that if you go to Gruene, to step in the General Store at least once. read more

Crowded with a holiday weekend. Nothing outstanding, typical T-shirts, salsa, Texas jams, spices, etc. Most folks came for the ice cream, the line for ice cream was cramped but expected. I came for the taffy and fudge. Sad to say but the taffy in a box was all stuck together due to the heat. Poor choice on my part. Pricey but expected. Staff were kind and helpful. I think I have about 8 or 9 different colors of just the general store shirts! The staff are always friendly and helpful. They don't get mad at you if you keep wanting to try samples or if you want to pick up stuff and look at it. So you have to keep in mind a lot of tourist go to Gruene, especially in the summer. With all the tourist, Yes this place with get crowded! You can't expect a place like that to not be (especially during the summer!!). You know they could not have placed this General Store in a better location, after enjoying a full bottle of wine, a couple of tastings, and maybe an extra glass at The Grapevine who can resist the want to tackle the little kids walking around with Blue Bell Ice Cream, I really hope I'm not the only one? By the way no children were harmed I did take the civilized route and locate the ice cream for purchase myself. So this old country thyme general store has everything that the tourist minded could possibly want. Me it was all about ice cream, and the peanut butter samples they had out, and maybe the fudge counter. No really the ice cream brought me here there was just a vomit of sampling (ha sound appetizing?) that hit you in the face right when you walked in. So after I plowed through, ha patiently waited in line, for my turn at the ice cream counter I got myself a scope of the Blue Bell Red Velvet Cake, by the way its bliss with ever cake bite you come across. The excitement doesn't just stop with the ice cream, I mean for me it just started. From hot sauces, peanut butters, dips, soups, cookies crackers, shirts, flasks, tin signs, FUDGE, toys, gizmos, gadgets, widgets, whatchamacallits - wall to wall it's an amusement park for your eyes. I have to warn you it gets rather crowded and you're liable to lose your ice cream to an elbow. Don't lose your ice cream, its Blue Bell! I most enjoyed the old license plate signs that if I had to guess covered cracks in the floor but really I think it was just for decorative purposes. Stopped by here after going to Schlitterbahn and eating at the Gristmill. This place is a touristy place but still feels old southern Texas vibed. Walking in you're hit with lots of fun Texas things left and right to explore, from their salsa, to canned jams, to candies. There is a bunch to explore. I should note that since I stopped by here 4th of July weekend, it was SO packed, everywhere in town! Tons of people were in the store, and it was definately a fun place to explore stuff without buying random trinkets of Texas things I will never need, aka 20 different kinds of Texas pride shot glasses haha. Things are pricy but the counter where they sell ice cream, shakes and fudge is the bomb, grab one while you're out in the heat exploring! It's fun! read more

Lots of homemade goodies that you can sample like salsas and various peanut butter. (try the chocolate amaretto peanut butter or the banana peanut butter!) First of all, how awesome is Gruene?! Second of all, how awesome is the Gruene general store?! My parents and I visit the hill country once a year, so I've been to a good amount of small town souvenir shops.This store is definitely one of my favorites for the following reasons: -They sell funny signs that are truth. For example, "Life is too short to live in Dallas", "This mess is a place" and my all time favorite, "Texas ain't no place for amateurs". Yer damn right it ain't. -They also have Blue Bell ice cream cones! Flavors are pretty basic but they're still delicious. I recommend getting the one scoop cone, since the scoop looked about 2.5 inches in diameter. For 2 scoops, they're smaller and on brief inspection seemed to be about the same amount. -Wide array of quality Texas jarred goods and quirky Texas post cards. My only gripe has to do with the confederate flags on display- pretty lowbrow in my opnion so minus one star for that. Regardless, perfect place for perusing and fitting in a laugh or two. read more

The front greets you with an ice-cream parlor/soda fountain/fudge shoppe (samples available upon request!) and a row of crackers & chips on which to try a multitude of apple/jalapeno/fruit butters and salsas. As you venture deeper, you will find canned pickled goods of all varieties, shirts, toys, and charming oddities such as "poopoopaper" and honey straws.
