Vicky is a godsend. When having my second baby, I thought I would be filled with 100% joy (of…read morecourse, with exhaustion).
(Please don't judge what I'm about to write. I'm being entirely honest because postpartum depression is very real. And while we think we'll never go through it, it can happen even though we don't want it to.)
Instead, my joy was only 10%, and postpartum depression took up 90%. This isn't to say I wasn't obsessively in love with my kids. I was and still am.
Wanting so badly to see my kids grow and get all hugs while fighting daily suicidal thoughts is the most dreadful feeling.
I am lucky though. My husband, my sister, and Vicky helped me pull through. There is nothing like love from your family and finding a professional you mesh with.
Let me tell you about Vicky.
She listened to everything I had to say, didn't judge any of my feelings, let me cry when I needed to let things out, provided me with the science to understand what was going on with my body, and last but not least, gave me tools to overcome my evil thoughts, vulnerability, and self-hate.
There was a time when I proactively apologized to my then months old baby, thinking I wouldn't make it. But in that dreadful moment of tears running down my face, I remembered the tools she had given me. I got my body active, put my baby to bed, told my sister I was in a bad place, took a shower then walked my dog. Within 30 minutes of apologizing to my sweet baby, my self-harming thoughts left me.
She knew when we needed to change the frequency of our sessions based on my overall emotion. She is genuine about the care she has for her patients.
I've had numerous therapists in the past but inevitably stopped seeing them because I felt like a checkbox in their day. They had their standard questions to ask every session and didn't alter them based on our conversation.
Vicky, on the other hand, will completely pivot depending on what you tell her. You aren't a checkbox for her. You are a person that she will gently partner with to help you heal and get through tough times.
I should also write that there were moments when I had to take care of the kids while in session with her. She understood. As a mom, she got it when we had to do therapy on the floor, so my little one could play or when I had to stand to rock my babe.
There is so much more that I can write about Vicky, but I'll spare your eyes.
Vicky - if you are reading this. Thank you for being a HUGE reason for why I still get to steal kisses from my babes. As I write this, I'm getting teary-eyed. Oh Vicky!
To whomever else is reading this, I hope you are and will be OK. If you need a caring therapist, look no further.
