There were some library items and places to sit. As a community center, it would be a nice place to hold a meeting, and there was more than one going on during the evening I dropped by. I recently returned to visit after being away for over a decade, and I was stunned to see what they called a "modernization" from 2021. This library held such a special place in my heart growing up. Walking through its doors again should've felt like coming home but instead, it felt like a stranger had moved in and redecorated with no sense of what made the place beloved. Sadly, the renovations have taken away much of its character. The ceilings have been lowered, the lighting is harsh and uninviting, and the carpet is distracting and ugly. The once beautiful staircase is now sad and stripped of its former charm--though it still creaks, a small comfort. And perhaps most shocking of all: there are so few books and bookshelves. How can you call it a library when there are so few bookshelves? My heart truly aches for the community, especially for the kids today who won't get to experience the magic this place once held. Even the bathrooms were untouched during the renovation, which makes the whole effort feel hollow and misdirected. It's sad it's not even open on Sundays. It's doing the community a disservice. Whoever approved these changes clearly didn't understand - or worse, didn't care - about what this place meant to the town. They should be ashamed. The only reason for my 3 stars is that the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and knowledge is power - go support your local library. Other than that, Aiken, get your act together. This was the biggest waste of money I've ever seen in my life. I'm glad I don't live here anymore.

It honors local men who served in the Spanish‑American War, the Philippine‑American War, and the Boxer Rebellion, three linked campaigns that marked the moment when the United States stepped onto the world stage as an imperial power. The marker itself is a simple upright granite tablet, set in the Greene Street median among the city's broader constellation of service memorials, and its plain inscription reflects the era's preference for brevity over symbolism. What gives it weight is the way it anchors a transitional moment in American military history, when Augusta's soldiers found themselves fighting far from home in conflicts that reshaped both national identity and foreign policy, and the city chose to preserve that memory alongside the better‑known wars that followed. A church on this site was dedicated May 26, 1821. It reads, "On this site May 8, 1845. The Southern Baptist Convention was organized by 327 delegates from the states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky and District of Columbia. The following officers were elected: Rev. Wm. B. Johnson of Edgefield S.C. President Talson Lumpton, Ga J.B. Taylor, Va. Vice presidents Jesse Hartwell, Ala. James C. Crane, Va. Secretaries The Rev. W.T. Brantey, Sr. was Pastor of the Church. This tablet was presented at the Centennial of the Convention" it's falling down because decades of deferred maintenance have finally become visible from the street. The building has been unused since 1975, and water intrusion, broken windows, and repeated break‑ins have accelerated the decay. Preservation officials have cited the owner for failing to stabilize the structure, and the damaged but otherwise impressive dome in particular makes the whole complex appear structurally unsound. What you're seeing isn't an illusion but the cumulative effect of long neglect on a once‑grand Beaux Arts landmark. Here's to hoping it can be repaired and not collapse. There was an option to fill out an application online, so my question having done that was if I brought in all the documents they asked for (with a few extras on hand just in case), would everything go smoothly? And it did. I was subject to an initial greeting where my purpose for being there was verified and I took a number and got in line. In the middle of the afternoon, it was less than ten minutes before I was seen. Presenting my stuff, doing a couple of quick tests, and paying a pretty reasonable fee, I was out of there in probably less than half an hour total. Now, some people have more complicated situations, and some people clearly don't check out all the online resources before coming, but at least from my perspective it was a pretty smooth experience and the people working there seemed like they knew what they were doing.

I wish we waited for the other locations we had on our wish list. Applying for housing was easy, but they did not want to work with us. We spoke to different people, who gave us different answers. We had asked for specific amenities (i.e. a fence for our dog, one story, near other families with kids similar in age), but all we disregarded. I'm not paying three thousand dollars for a fence I'm not able to take when we PCS again. We decided to live off post which was the best choice we could have made. You can get a QUALITY rental for the same price of your BAH. I've made friends with a few families on post, and looking at their houses made me feel so relieved that we don't live there. Eisenhower is okay. I like my kids pediatrician and she always puts out referrals for us no problem. I'm actually relieved that their specialty care is out in the world and not there. However getting immunizations here is awful. It's -always- a long wait after you see the doctor. I guess I was spoiled at Bethesda, because they had about five stations usually with two people at each, at least when it came to the kids shots. It was so nice because they could do shots at the same time on the opposite legs. But anyways, scheduling future appointments at Eisenhower is always a PITA too. For parents with kids four and under, they have a program called NPSP, New Parent Support Program. I've met some really nice moms there and it gets you and the kids socialized. They usually have quarterly events, and it's always open to their entire family. The PX is actually pretty nice. We've always had no problem. The food court isn't terrible, but I hear they're opening a Tropical Smoothie in May, praise. The commissary is TRASH, and it's closed on Monday. You'd think that given how big Ft. Gordon is, that it'd be quality products, but it's once of the worst commissaries I've ever stepped foot in. Always, always, ALWAYS check the expiration dates and look for mold. ALWAYS. While I wouldn't recommend anything in Fort Gordon, there is so much to do in Augusta, Grovetown, and Evans. And if you can swing it, live off post. You'll be happier.
