The smoke coming up through the floors was so strong we were getting smoke inhalation symptoms. Gross! But then we noticed that the smell was strongest where our floorboards had wide gaps, and we wondered if flooring might be the answer. We love the look of our historic floors, so preserving that was a big concern for us. We reached out to Thomas about sealing up the gaps with caulking and he responded the same day. He fit us in for a consult within two weeks and sent an estimate one hour after his inspection. One week later, they were in our house working. Even though it was October in Salem, he and his team came out and delivered. 3 weeks from start to finish. For a very fair price, we now have airtight floors that look exactly as aged and beautiful as they were before. We were worried that adding caulk between the boards might take away from their charm, but the team was so careful and neat in their work that you would never noticed the filling unless we pointed it out. And the smell is GONE! 100% solved our problem without changing the floors we love. Can't say enough good things about Advanced Flooring Solution. Thank you, Thomas and Co.!

However, our enthusiasm quickly waned as we encountered a cascade of issues throughout the project that was supposed to take 2 weeks but ended up lasting 4 months. Our troubles began with a logistical misstep when Andrew was directed to the wrong address by the office for our initial design meeting, more than 45 minutes away from our home. This error forced us to rearrange our schedules unexpectedly--a frustrating start that should have been a warning sign. Despite this setback, we proceeded due to Andrew's likable demeanor and the appealing renderings he created. By early December, we had finalized plans, paid the deposit, and scheduled a start date with assurances from the office. However, as the proposed start date approached in late January, we heard nothing from the office. Repeated attempts to obtain updates from Andrew yielded little, with him admitting difficulty in reaching our supposed project manager, Stephanie. Finally, mere days before the supposed start, Stephanie informed us of a delay due to awaiting parts--an excuse communicated at the eleventh hour and pushing our start date back weeks. Problems continued to mount once work began. During early stages, we were inexplicably billed over $1000 for a new shower valve and minimal additional labor, which was promptly found defective after new installation and required correction that we had to initiate. Miscommunications further plagued the project. Unsupervised workers assumed incorrect specifications for fixtures like the shower head and vanity, necessitating adjustments only when noticed and brought attention to by US, the clients. Moreover, the invasion of our privacy by the master electrician, who entered our secondary bathroom one morning when the lights were on, water was running, and the door was closed, epitomized the company's lack of professionalism and left us feeling VIOLATED in our own home. Administratively, the company proved equally inept. A Scheduled building inspection was missed due to our doorbell wire being cut by the same master electrician who walked in on one of us indecent days prior, costing us days of work. Despite promises in our initial quote, no company representative attended the building inspection (only plumbing and electric had a representative present), and we were nearly charged $495 for their absence until we contested. Critical elements such as shower wall alignments and door installations were botched, requiring extensive rework and further delays. The shower walls themselves took over a month to fix due to a lack of detail in lining up the hexagon pattern that we had selected in the corners of the shower. Not until we escalated this issue to the manufacturer were we acknowledged about our dissatisfaction and offered to make it right. When we finally sought resolution from management, our concerns were met with indifference and deflection. Hervey Afuine, the owner, displayed a dismissive attitude towards our grievances, even threatening legal action when pressed about the privacy violation--an incident he refused to acknowledge or address, yet quoted that the had an "issue" with the use of the word "violated" when describing the situation. In conclusion, our experience with this company fell far short of expectations. While Andrew initially impressed us, the pervasive issues with communication, work quality, and management overshadowed any positive aspects. We are unsure as to how a "project manager" is able to get away with "managing a project" without stepping one foot in on to view the actual project in person. We still have no idea what Stephanie's role was besides being cold, unresponsive, and lackluster in communication. The owner proved to us that he has absolutely no respect for women and only cares about his bottom line. He never once answered one email that we sent and it is clear that he does not like confrontation. KEEP SHOPPING.

Unfortunately the flashing was totally inadequate and several years later we had to have the deck and ramp removed in order for the rot to be remediated and proper flashing installed. In total it cost over $100,000 to repair. Platt of course denied any responsibility and quoted the "Statute of Repose", in effect absolving him of any liability. He also came up with the excuse that I had no gutters (what a joke). More recenly, we noticed we needed to replace some of the siding. Guess what, under the clapboard there was no Tyvek.

The experience was one of the worst we have had with a contractor, and this is our third home and third major renovation. From the start of the project we had concerns. The project manager made clear to us that he was unhappy at Platt and it showed. He was often late and failed to respond in a timely way. We later learned that he was applying to other jobs and left Platt right after our job was complete. The workers sent by Platt to our home seemed unskilled. Nearly ever part of the work had to be redone - both minor (floors with large gaps, poor carpentry, painting issues), and major (roofing, water issues). We found significant safety issues with some of the work completed. Platt installed a metal cap on our clay lined chimney resulting in significant water leakage and potential carbon monoxide blockage and mold. When we raised this issue with Platt, instead of fixing it, they hired a law firm. It seems they have a pattern of failing to fix issues and instead using lawyers instead. Eventually they paid for some repairs to the chimney but only after we started to take legal action. We still have ongoing disputes with Platt about water leaking in another room, which we believe is due to how they applied the roofing materials, and poorly painted balusters. Instead of working with us, Platt again hired a law firm (curiously, they now have a new law firm). It's clear to us that Platt has become too big in recent years, and can't keep up the good work they might have done in the past. We've since used other contractors in the area who are excellent.
