I thought I had already reviewed this place. Anyway, it's an independently owned grocery store…read morethat's huge and really cool. Apparently it started off as an IGA, but then broke away from the franchise and blossomed into what it is today. I love going to grocery stores when I'm in a different city, because they always have products that aren't available at home. So the last time my husband and I were in The Soo, I dragged him into the rental car to go check out Pino's and now he raves about it even more than I do, lol. It's huge like a Loblaws or Superstore, but has the feel of more like a Farm Boy or a Whole Foods. It has a great bakery section with fresh baked donuts! The prepared food section has lots of variety. We were growing tired of eating out so much on our trip so we bought a bunch of stuff to eat back at our hotel room. Whenever people talk about The Soo, I always bring up Pino's Get Fresh and The Burger Don as my two favourite places there ;)

Walmart is Walmart is Walmart, it's the people who make the difference. I had interactions with…read morefour different people while shopping in the store and three of four were outstanding. A vendor in the electronics department was my first contact and though he wasn't a Walmart employee he approached and asked if I needed help as soon as I got that confused look on my face, and was very helpful. Because he wasn't a Walmart employee he was unable to answer a final question and directed me to the department manager who was clearly annoyed and only assisted me after I continued to press for assistance. As I continued wandering around the store while waiting for my wife I needed some assistance and encounter number three was initiated by a Walmart employee stocking shelves who went out of her way to walk me to my destination. My final contact came at checkout - self scan - where a very pleasant, friendly lady greeted me, assisted me and wished me a Happy New Year! The store was clean, well lit, lots of people working to keep the shelves stocked. Lots of parking, and the lot was well maintained despite 10+ inches of snow in the previous 48 hours. I've been in Walmart stores in many different states over the years, this one appears to be well managed and most people were helpful and friendly.

This is not the case at Rome's. We bought two trays of sushi, which were very bland and forgettable. It wasn't a big deal; they were priced cheap and they got the job done. But we'd also picked up two plates of Shrimp Pad Thai and some seaweed salad. Mind you, both of these dishes are delicious, but you wouldn't know that if you live in Sault Ste Marie. First of all, the pad thai tasted nothing like pad thai, and not for the better. We threw them out. The seaweed salad looked good, though. I took one bite, spit it out, and ran to the bathroom to throw up. I've never thrown up from anything tasting that bad before. I've had sour milk in my mouth before, and rinsed without problem. This seaweed salad made me throw up. It should not taste like dirty lake water! You're doing it wrong! Stop trying to make foods you have no clue how to make!

Lying to Customers…read more Kid working at hot foods counter tells me I can't buy chicken tenders and potatoe wedges for another hour, at 8pm. So I drive all the way back to the store and get there a few minutes before the hour. The kid and his co-worker do their best to ignore me and another customer before disappearing somewhere. I ask the kid, Do you remember telling me that chicken dinners aren't put out until 8pm? Sneering, he tells me what's out there is all there is. I asked him why he lied to me. Wouldn't look me in the eye. Complained to closing manager who basically fobbed me off. I loathe dishonesty and won't be shopping at Rome's in Sault Ste Marie ever again.

We were able to find pretty much everything we needed. Not a big fan of the staff working checkout. Some were helpful, but others were just hovering right near you a lot. I had no idea you had to scan the reusable bags, and I was scolded for not knowing where the barcode was on it. Also, I have both a Mastercard and a discover card and both got declined several times, only my friends visa would work. If they have a policy on card types, I wish they would make it more clear. It was fine for a grocery store, but I wouldn't choose this place unless I had no better options.
