The place always has a long line every time we pass by. Imagine our surprise when, even on a Monday, the place was packed! We ordered Silantro's Calliente Wings (Php170, 3.7USD) for our starter. Their Lucha Tacos is one of their best-sellers. We had the Medio which offers double choice of meat in 2 taco shells (option for soft or hard shell, we went for the the soft shell) for only Php95 (2USD)! We ordered the lengua and lamb. For the adventurous, there is ox stripe. But, they also have chicken and beef for those who want to play it safe. Go for the lengua, really good! I also had a Mojito (Php90, 1.9USD), one glass was definitely not enough. The only thing we didn't like about Silantro was their service. It took them quite a long time to serve our food. But, even with the waiting time, the food is worth it. I'm going back to this place with my friends. Next time, I'll be ordering their Unli Mojito! :)

I had a pleasant and comfortable first time visit to this branch (I am often at their Morato branch). I was the first to arrive among my friends and was seated to a confortable couch while the receptionist introduced to me our waiter. I was handed the menu and was introduced to their best-sellers and promos. Most restaurants I know would not even mention their promo, but they did. I was already hungry so I ordered their southwestern egg rolls to spend the time. Egg rolls is one of my favorite at Chili's. It is soft flour tortillas filled with beans, smoked chicken, corn, jalapenos jack cheese, red peppers and spinach, rolled and fried, then served with avocado-ranch dressing. It is cool and comforting to the mouth. After awhile, my friends arrived and we started ordering. We availed their Php999 promo of 1 appetizer and 2 entree of choice. We ended up ordering Wings over Buffalo, Fish and Chips, and Classic Chicken Fajita since it will be for sharing. The chicken drummettes are very flavorful and swert yet very spicy too. The fish comes in 3 giant pieces. They are soft and crispy but a bit too oily. The grilled chicken was good and everything blended well arpubd the flour tortilla. Halfway thrpugh our catching up, my phone died. Although there are available sockets around the restaurant, we sat from it. So I asked our server if I can give them my phone to charge and they willingly accepted it. Overall, staffs are very attentive and fast. Food is good. The toilets are downstairs though. My first burrito did have 99% rice so this one had a little less than 99% so I'd say it's better than that. The chicken was good. The veggies were just like some lettuce and beans. Dips were perfect. I'm not sure if this is authentic burrito, but I'm pretty sure it's not more of rice and not so bland. I can't say I've experienced better, but I guess they can do better. I think they're a bit pricey for most people. For me, it's just right considering how I was filled with just half the burrito (or I probably just have a tiny stomach to fill). Might try other stuff from here when I'm in the area. But I hope they do something with the dryness and bland taste of the food.

The nacho platter in terms of appearance was pretty exciting--colorful, lots of toppings, etc. But it also fell short. There was a lot of ingredients, but they tasted store-bought and pretty cheap. Again, I was looking for more black beans, jalapeno and a bit more spice. Contrary to its plating, the flavors I'm looking for in a good nacho platter was just not there. My friend ordered the Pollo meal and was also disappointed. My brother introduced me to this place and it is just so good! Think of it like a thick taco! Crispy, chewy goodness with every bite. If it's your first time to eat here, go for the traditional chalupa! Be careful with the Chipotle sauce but, it does make the chalupas taste better. More accurately, you get a puffy taco shell, made by deep frying a freshly rolled out piece of dough, filled with your choice of meat, vegetables, and sauce. The chalupa shell is the star of the show here. Its crisp golden crunch yields to a soft, chewy inside. I'd eat it with just sauce. Chipotle sauce, to be exact. Julio's gives a choice of regular crema sauce and spicy chipotle sauce. Crema finds itself somewhere between sour cream and mayonnaise both in flavor and viscosity. The regular version here reminds me of a runnier and tangier shawarma sauce, and is good in its own right. However, I'm a chilihead and the Chipotle adds a nice smoky kick to the crema. Highly recommended. As for proteins, to be honest they take a backseat here. The ground beef is alright, and there's not too much gristle, but I far prefer the grilled chicken for the texture. It's firm and meaty and provides a contrast to the shell. All in all, I highly recommend Julio's' chalupas. It's a cut above a normal taco.

Stepping inside, we were greeted by their cupcakes, which I found slightly distracting from the whole Latin American concept. Apparently, it's a good representation of what to expect. Although the interiors were consistent with Cocina Juan's facade--small but beautiful and culturally apt, their dishes were a fusion of Spanish delicacies and American comfort food. I opted for the Chicken Cheese con Chimichurri (see photos). It was a hearty meal for P200: The chicken was moist and perfectly cooked, though I would have liked more heat on my chimichurri and perhaps a more generous topping of it; the cheese was a nice surprise, but I wasn't a big fan. I also would've liked a bit more cherry tomatoes to compliment the sweet sinful char of the grilled chicken. I found this meal perfect with their classic lemonade drink, which thankfully wasn't that sweet because I had a bit of a sore throat that day. Finally, we gave in to the sweet cupcake temptation. I had the red velvet just to be safe. Though it didn't disappoint in terms of flavor, I found the cake base a bit too heavy and sticky. The cream cheese though was the saving grace. Not bad if only their brewed coffee was available. (It did become available later when we were halfway done with our cupcakes.) Overall, it was a good lunch. Now I'm just dreaming about what their burrito and taco selections taste like.

That's why I'm so happy that Cocina Juan is back for Maginhawa for good. Cocina Juan serves Nicaraguan and Tex-Mex food in their hippie-vibe, free-spirit art restaurant. During the Maginhawa road works a year or two ago, they had to shut down for a while. But now they're back, and they have cupcakes! PROS: They renovated the place so it's roomier and I still love their décor; Food is as good as before. Their Everything-on-it Nachos is a family favorite. And of course, their burritos. Enough said; A bit of a wait time for made-to-order grilled food but the staff are so nice, you wouldn't mind. CONS: They don't serve complimentary nachos anymore; Serving sizes are still good enough but it was less compared to before they went on hiatus; A lot of their offerings got more expensive too. TL;DR: Cocina Juan is a restaurant with food so good that you'll come back over and over again.

To be honest, if I'm handed anything spicier than wasabi, I turn tail. Fast. I am not a fan. But oh, this place managed to win me over. First, there's the fries (lovingly smothered in mustard because I'm an oddball who smothers everything in mustard when given the chance). Normally, I prefer my fries thick cut and mealy but if we're talking about crisp shoestring potatoes, this. This is good. There's a subtle heat to them that grows the more you have but it's not a bad heat at all. It's flavorful and salty -- but not too salty. You can probably go without ketchup but you'll have to pry the mustard from my cold dead fingers. Then there were their quesadillas. Their cheese quesadillas. It was love at first sight. Warm, gooey... it was everything I wanted in cheese. It's served with this nice crisp salsa (again, a first. I can't stand raw tomatoes but I LOVE their salsa on these quesadillas) and this wonderfully spicy Army Navy sauce. I've asked time and time again what it is and what it's made of but they're not spilling the beans. Whatever it is, its perfect with that delicious square of melted cheese and tortilla. Notable mentions: their Libertea is good. You can REALLY taste the tea. This is what iced tea ASPIRES to be. The Freedom Toast is good, too. Definitely not what you'd want for breakfast. It's more of a dessert than a breakfast. Blame the ice cream. Army Navy is probably not where I'd go if I wanted a heavy meal... but it's definitely what I'd consider my definition of comfort food.
