Grinder Gym is the best gym in San Diego and around the world. If you want to try yourself in strongman, arm wrestling or powerlifting - this place is created for you! Come and try yourself, we are all like a huge family here, we will always help and advise you! I attached a few photos for those who understand... From Hennadii Bahdasarian

This is a great gym owned and operated by Dave Depew. This is a classic REAL gym, with every piece of equipment you can think of with an amazing California outdoor area. This is the home of many powerlifters, strongmen competitors and a great community of people who just enjoy working out. Dave has continued to build out the gym and you can tell the pride he takes in his facility. I can't stress enough this is a true gym with respect being key. Re-rack your weights, treat the equipment like it was your own, leave the clown stuff trying to go viral doing some dumb over the top stuff. Everything in this gym is heavy asf lol humbles you quickly but this is honestly one of my favorite gyms in all of San Diego. He has never had a problem with me filming or taking photos as I understand the patrons come first and allowing them their space. The aesthetic is unbeatable If you are visiting San Diego, CA I suggest you drop through and check this place out.

Best gym in San Diego. I had to come back because this gym is so damn good. I'm glad Dave welcomed me back. I highly recommend you come here and arm wrestle on Fridays.

Too early for this, weights lookin real heavy atm

Muscle Beach meets sunny San Diego! Tan, pump, and sweat it up in their outdoor weight area, or lift heavy inside. They have old school equipment that might be described by some prissy, uptight individuals as grody, but really this is a gym to pump some serious iron in an unpretentious atmosphere. Buy an open gym membership for pretty cheap, or opt for their weight room classes. I believe it's $89/ month for classes only (unlimited). There are also three tiers of memberships that allow you to take advantage of combo gym and class time. I mostly took advantage of their weight room classes and all the trainers were pretty chill, but motivating. The only downside is that the weight room could get SUPER hot in the summer. Be safe and make sure to drink a lot of water before class in those situations. Classes are mostly geared around weight lifting with varying levels of cardio. Dave usually gives you some pretty evil amounts of cardio. That one morning with the sled in the parking lot was killer! Classes are offered M-Sat and the theme for each day switches between upper and lower body with core & cardio on Wednesday and boot camp styled classes on Saturday. You have your own rack of weights and a bench and each class is pretty different. No workouts of the day here! Get out here if you want to lift some serious iron and bulk up!

Does this gym offer classes? I can't seem to find a schedule on the website but some reviews mention classes.

Good evening , I was wondering if you do any military discount please as few of us are over from the UK representing the Royal Navy. And we would like to use your facilities for the day please. Kind regards and thank you in advance on your reply?

Conveniently located on First Street and accessible 24 hours, the gym is clean and well-maintained. Occupying the entire ground floor of a building, it has a feeling of spaciousness about it. Doors that open to the small patio area, along with ceiling fans, enable good air circulation throughout the space. Fellow gym-goers are friendly and always willing to engage when you approach them about routines or exercises. No attitude at this place whatsoever. People are genuinely happy to share their successes and reflections on their own self-journeys to fitness, which makes the gym feel like not only a place the place where you can go to work out, but also a place where you can continually learn from other gym enthusiasts about ways to improve your own focus on physical improvement. A sense of a community among people with a common interest in health and fitness, and a willingness to share it, are two of of the most unique and notable characteristics of this gym. The owner, Keith Deidrich, pays meticulous attention to the gym's layout and functionality, resulting in a nice rotation of machines and weights throughout the space. It's exciting to come in to find a new machine, such as the very impressive cable crossover set up, complete with high bars for dead-hangs and pull-ups, or a one-of-a-kind lat pull-over machine that requires the force of your elbows, placed on pads and pushing down, to accomplish the exercise. It's like a squat machine for the upper body. In addition to the machines and freeweights, the gym has add-on weight blocks in gradations of two-and-a-half pounds that are custom-made to be inserted on top of the machine pulley racks to increase the resistance in smaller increments when the built-in 10- or 15-pound increases are too much of a step-up. Being able to use these blocks has enabled me to slowly increase the amount I'm lifting without making a jump up to a higher weight that is just too heavy. And there are plenty of cardio machines as well. In short, this neighborhood-centered gym with its relaxed vibe, excellent equipment, and friendly and respectful members makes working out a highlight of my daily schedule.

I walked out feeling like I had found someone who actually understands how to coach people, not just train them. He has an incredible ability to read the person in front of him, adjust in real time, and push without ever making you feel discouraged. The knowledge is obvious, but what stayed with me was how present he was. Every correction had a purpose. Every conversation mattered. It's like people here try to make you uncomfortable as possible when you're just trying to work out... jeeze. You'd think there was a sign up saying " No f%#gs or Tr*^%ys". Both the blonde haired young man and good looking trainer with the beard and shaggy hair who work here obviously never got a lesson in manners from their parents because staring people down is quite aggressive and rude. The custodian also needs to stop letting homeless people in to charge their phones or shower. I came here late one night and had a man follow me out to watch me get into my truck before taking pictures of me when I left. The manager is pleasant though and I see her walk the floor with new people or to improve the lay out so she cares about doing her job. If you're LGBT though I'd try to avoid this location and go to Rosecrans or Tierrasanta. Also the hot water takes 5 minutes to turn on when showering. Ugh.

It was the primary reason I joined. Unfortunately, the circuit has never functioned as described. Staff doesn't enforce the intended rotation, and members routinely treat the machines like standard equipment -- sitting between sets, often on their phones, with no regard for others trying to move through. When I asked to work in during rest periods, I was met with outright rudeness. Even when staff stepped in to explain the circuit guidelines, members pushed back. A gym is only as good as the culture it cultivates. Enforcing the features you sell -- and holding members to basic courtesy standards -- should be non-negotiable. This gap between what was promised and what I experienced is why I cancelled my membership. I was also sold a personal training package by their independent in-house fitness training company and it was also not as presented--the trainer didn't listen to me, cut my session short, and never gave me the exercise plan as promised. I'm still fighting to get my $379 back for this.

I chose this gym for the convenient location and easy parking. I'd never done a full walkthrough,…read moreso I popped in one afternoon and was genuinely impressed by the old-school vibe. It felt like a perfect match for someone who appreciates real gym culture over shiny boutique studios. But the longer I trained there, the more the cracks started showing--and they add up fast. The equipment is a mixed bag. The free weights feel satisfyingly heavy (old-world heavy, great for pumps), and I really loved the turf area--it's loaded with punching bags, sleds, aerial bands, kettlebells, Bosu balls, a vibration plate, and more. It's genuinely impressive... when it's not a zoo. People constantly cut across paths or leave equipment scattered everywhere. Lanes or some basic traffic management would make a huge difference. The machines, mostly older Techno Gym and Hoist units, are where things fall apart. Many have off motions, some are missing weight scales entirely so you can't even tell what you're lifting, and the abductor/adductor machine has a weirdly tilted seat that forces awkward positioning and incomplete reps. The locker room was a constant frustration. Way too small for the traffic, with tiny lockers that barely fit a gym bag--forget squeezing in shoes, a phone, or a hat. It's also uncomfortably hot with terrible ventilation, and the black toilets plus lack of any real vanity area made post-workout routines feel like a hassle. Same story with the abysmal shower water pressure. Nothing about the space felt luxurious despite the "low membership, high quality" marketing. The infrared sauna gets plenty hot but is clearly showing its age (the teak creaks like it's begging for maintenance). The cycle studio is actually awesome--super dark and built for intense rides--and the yoga studio with skylights and soft wood floors is cozy. The stretching room has a stretching cage and free percussion guns, but with only one cage and limited space, it quickly turns into a crowded mess. Two reformers are a nice touch, though. The recovery area has real potential: hot bath, cold plunge, red light panel, and Norma-Tec boots. But everything is pay-to-play after the first use (one free recovery session per month, $35 extra after that; InBody scans are $15 each). At my previous luxury club, these were included with your membership. They send a cute monthly newsletter highlighting employee of the month and new equipment, which is a nice touch, but it doesn't hide the feeling that the club is running on limited operating capital. Everything feels a little gimmicky and nickel-and-dimed. I really wanted to love this place for its old-school soul and solid turf setup, but at $199 per month, the headaches and lack of luxury simply aren't worth it. I'll miss the turf training the most, but I won't be renewing. Best avoided unless you're okay with paying premium prices for a dated experience.

This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!
