Living in Hillcrest has so many components that make it a terrific place to live, and one of the…read moreforemost among them is having Prime Fitness just around the corner from my house. Conveniently located on First Street and accessible 24 hours, the gym is clean and well-maintained. Occupying the entire ground floor of a building, it has a feeling of spaciousness about it. Doors that open to the small patio area, along with ceiling fans, enable good air circulation throughout the space. Fellow gym-goers are friendly and always willing to engage when you approach them about routines or exercises. No attitude at this place whatsoever. People are genuinely happy to share their successes and reflections on their own self-journeys to fitness, which makes the gym feel like not only a place the place where you can go to work out, but also a place where you can continually learn from other gym enthusiasts about ways to improve your own focus on physical improvement. A sense of a community among people with a common interest in health and fitness, and a willingness to share it, are two of of the most unique and notable characteristics of this gym. The owner, Keith Deidrich, pays meticulous attention to the gym's layout and functionality, resulting in a nice rotation of machines and weights throughout the space. It's exciting to come in to find a new machine, such as the very impressive cable crossover set up, complete with high bars for dead-hangs and pull-ups, or a one-of-a-kind lat pull-over machine that requires the force of your elbows, placed on pads and pushing down, to accomplish the exercise. It's like a squat machine for the upper body. In addition to the machines and freeweights, the gym has add-on weight blocks in gradations of two-and-a-half pounds that are custom-made to be inserted on top of the machine pulley racks to increase the resistance in smaller increments when the built-in 10- or 15-pound increases are too much of a step-up. Being able to use these blocks has enabled me to slowly increase the amount I'm lifting without making a jump up to a higher weight that is just too heavy. And there are plenty of cardio machines as well. In short, this neighborhood-centered gym with its relaxed vibe, excellent equipment, and friendly and respectful members makes working out a highlight of my daily schedule.

People here are accommodating and know the rules and work with you on sharing lanes if it gets crowded. But the pool here is one of the best I have been to in all the YMCA's I have swam at. It would be my regular go to swim place if I lived in the area. Parking can be a challenge but you can always find a spot.

Today I showed up for a water exercise class only to be told it's canceled. No notifications to me beforehand, no emails, and the online pool schedule still shows the class as happening. Annoyed. But it was the lackluster attitude from the front desk employee that made me go from annoyed to pissed off. There was another older lady who'd shown up for the same class, and similarly frustrated. The employee gave her some attitude and implied it was her fault for not knowing, "There's a board out front that says it." Well I went to the board and it's in extremely fine print, and there are several other boards there too, who reads all that. Plus you only see it once you're at the gym, so you already wasted time to get there. I told the front desk employee the online schedule needs updating. She stuck to her story, "It's on the board." I asked what other classes are happening now, maybe I could attend another since I'm already here and this is my time in my schedule to exercise. The employee looked at a schedule and said 3-4 random class names, times and studios. I asked to see the sched so I could browse it. She gave it, and I picked out a potential class. She said, "Oh see this schedule is no good." Ok so what's the point then? I asked her for her name. "Vi," she said curtly. I asked for her last name, she said, "I don't have to give you my last name." Wow! It was evident that this person had no desire to help me. Nor did she really know anything about the schedule of the day. Nor did she know much about how to resolve customer issues. Nor did she care. If this is all Vi does at her job, then just have a computer do it. At least a computer will give real information and won't give me attitude. Another time, my family came for family swim and the pool was short staffed on lifeguards. They made every family wait poolside until somebody in the pool left, to keep their ratios. Some poor families sat there waiting for 30 minutes. The lifeguards were terrible at communicating what was happening, why, or how it would be resolved. Then in the middle of the pool time, they made EVERYONE get out of the pool and take a "mandatory break" for 5 minutes. No idea why, no explanations. It was ridiculous.

No, it isn't full of body builders, but it's meant for those serious on getting fit and or losing weight. Some of the equipment is rusty or has seen better days, but it works, and that's all that matters. They have everything you need as far as machines and free weights. I know that they have some personal trainers that work here (I don't think they actually work for the Lab) and they are always working with a client helping them on form and workouts. I personally work with Big Mike (Michael Williams) and the guy is amazing at helping you reach your goals. I will forever come here from now on so that I don't have to wait for the "selfie gym bunny".

The gym is huge to start so it is almost guaranteed that the machine you want will be available, even during peak hours. They really pride themselves on cleanliness and that is the most important aspect to me. Members are always wiping down their equipment before and after use and the employees are periodically cleaning all around. The locker rooms & restrooms are spacious with many spots available so that there is no stalling between guests. During my initial tour of the Mission Valley location, the express circuit was highlighted as a…read morestandout feature -- a time-efficient way to get a full workout in during a busy workday. It was the primary reason I joined. Unfortunately, the circuit has never functioned as described. Staff doesn't enforce the intended rotation, and members routinely treat the machines like standard equipment -- sitting between sets, often on their phones, with no regard for others trying to move through. When I asked to work in during rest periods, I was met with outright rudeness. Even when staff stepped in to explain the circuit guidelines, members pushed back. A gym is only as good as the culture it cultivates. Enforcing the features you sell -- and holding members to basic courtesy standards -- should be non-negotiable. This gap between what was promised and what I experienced is why I cancelled my membership. I was also sold a personal training package by their independent in-house fitness training company and it was also not as presented--the trainer didn't listen to me, cut my session short, and never gave me the exercise plan as promised. I'm still fighting to get my $379 back for this.

This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!
