It's the Who-ville set with the halls decked out for some Christmas cheer. This event area is located across from the Dreamworks Theater and is based off the classic, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". It's a must stop for the holiday season, both during the day time and during the evening when the Whoville tree is completely lit up! For Grinchmas, you 're able to meet the characters from the movie wandering around and interacting with guests, like Cindy Lou Who, the mayor of Whoville, the postman, etc. All of them have their masks on! To meet the big man himself, I'm talking about the Grinch, you gotta wait in line! Throughout the whole day, even when the park closed for the special event, the line NEVER got shorter. Super popular guy and he's very interactive with everyone. We opted to only visit the Grinch's dog, Max, who admittedly has a super short line. Cute doggo though, love his holiday head gear! There's also photo ops with items from the set and decor. I think there was even a place where you can send letters or something out and then they make a donation out to a charity, not entirely sure. There were also seasonal foods such as cake jars, Grinch cotton candy and cookies, and boozey stuffs but we didn't get a chance to try since they closed when it was the special event...drats! There's a Tree Lighting show a couple times a week. It's cute, fun and short and you get to see the main Grinch characters doing their thing. Lots of pretty lights, colors, music, and even "snow" at the end! You can say my heart grew three sizes that day with all the holiday warmth and cheer! read more

It was raining a lot when we were there which put a damper on the activities but we still got a fantastic picture with the grinch, and got to meet the dog and give some pets. I'm glad that we had the opportunity to participate even after Christmas. read more

I've seen the movie "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" but for the life of me, I can't remember anything about this movie. But I do remember is that Universal Studios created a Who-ville at the Lot soon after the movie came out. It was one of those you see while doing the team tour. Well, that Who-ville is now gone but a bigger and more extravagant Wholabration has been recreated and held during the holiday season. Don't fret if you don't know anything about the story or movie. The synopsis will be conveyed to the audience through a short skit featuring the Grinch and the rest of the characters. The story ends with the tree lighting and snow. I love looking at the 60 ft tree and kept snapping pics while it changes in different colors. Love the equally colorful gift boxes underneath it. There's a lot of other activities all throughout the day such as mini concert, art activities for the kids, story telling and photo ops with the Grinch or Max, the dog. This is a fun holiday experience. It is like you are fully in the Whoville. There are some of the vehicles and Who's from Whoville, like Cindy Lu Who, The Grinch, The Mayor, and Max. The Who characters are funny and great with the kids. They also do shows like singing and the lighting ceremony that goes with a story. I recommend going early to these shows because it gets crowded and seating is limited. Arrive early if you want a good view. Also, there will be a long line to take a picture with The Grinch. We went to the Grinch line first and we kept on switching off with the people in our group so we could all take pictures with the different characters there. read more

I was invited to attend CBS radio's private grinchmas event and I must say it was better than what I had expected. I am sure the experience would have been slightly reduced if the huge masses of the general public also attended. Parking rates for this event: General $10, Better $20, VIP $40. The 60ft tall grinchmas tree was worth all the hype and I enjoyed the wannabe pentatonix performance in front. Who-ville characters were friendly and sociable. My favorite time was with Max the dog at his photo station. Pictures with Max are free and he was just so cute. Grinch made an appearance and did some decent lip syncing. Again, not a bad experience. I loved the beautifully decorated tree and ever changing colors. read more

As for Grinchmas , first... the plaza around the tree where the show is put on fills about an hour or more before the show. So you stand and wait ... with kids that's tough. Next issue is since It's standing room only small kids get lost in the crowd and can't see the stage area. We saw parents putting their kids up on planters to try and get a look. Once they put their kids on their shoulders, forget about it. A wall of people. Why not set up some kind of bleachers or hold it in another area where kids will see the show. Maybe hold it in sound stage like the special effects show. So our kids didn't like something they couldn't see but only hear. As for the show and snow , SHORT show, they light the tree and the "snow " comes on for about two minutes and shuts off. It's not enough to come down like real snow but you see it blow way over your head. Ok --disappointed, we walked over to The Wizarding World Of HP. First watched the castle light show then as you walk back thru the village there's a "snow" show again. Same issue as the Grinch-- it's not on long enough so after 2 minutes it's turned off. Almost none of it came down and on a wind-less night just blew around 50 feet up and disappeared before coming down. We went to one of these "snowfall" events at a local mall in Huntington Beach and it's great. It's all around you and on you and on the tables and your clothes.. kids are giggling and think it's great... I asked a Universal employee about it and he said he was told since the "snow" is soap based they don't want it on the ground creating slips and falls. So it's just an aerial effect made to watch 50 feet up in the sky...people around us were holding out their hands and seeing nothing coming down you heard them moan...."ahhh man". Then on the way out we were asked if we would like to do a survey. Beware, because at most other theme parks if you do a survey like this one that took 45 minutes of waiting in a room then some 10 minutes of 75 questions they reward you with a set of one day fast passes or a free ticket or two for another day ... something. But here nothing. Zip.Nada. Finally does every ride have to involve motion simulators? Many people I've seen, avoid the Simpsons, Transformers and of course he infamous Harry Potter ride because the nausea afterwards ruins their day. It's why the other parks avoid them. I get it you're a movie studio. But watching people get off Harry Potter then run to barf in the bushes is terrible for us and for them .... My last paragraph I'm sure will not change a thing but does Butterbeer have to cost almost $8? Heck a glass of real beer is $12.99 and I don't drink and think that's nuts. A black robe from one of the Harry Potter shops for a child $110? A wand $50? As a pass holder, I hope this helps them improve the experience for next year. read more

Grinchmas was so much fun!! It is included in the admission to Universal Studios Hollywood and only happens on select dates during the holiday season. The Wholabration as it is known happens at Universal Plaza. Activities happen all day until closing time. All the performance times can be found there and the performance are on repeat which is really nice because if you miss one performance, you can still catch it later and it helps to cut down on the crowds too. The main performances throughout the day happen on a stage in front of the Christmas tree. There are 4 main performaces: 1) Story time with Cindy Lou 2)The Who-liday Singers boy band 3)Martha May Who-vier and the Who Dolls 4) Whoilday Tree Lighting. The tree lighting happens at night every half hour. There are also many activities that happen in the plaza. You can decorate a cookie (extra fee $6.50), design an ornament and help decorate the Christmas trees, decorate and send postcards, and have a book donated. You can also have meet and greets with The Grinch and Max (there are different dogs throughout the day), and meet and interact with all the Who's that run around the plaza. I love that the characters are so interactive!! They will randomly approach you, talk to you. We asked one for a group picture and he went and gathered a bunch of Who's to take a picture with us!! It was so much fun!! We met everyone including the Mayor!! They all are in character so well! Holiday cheer, sights, sounds, and tastes are abound!! There are stands that sell hot chocolate, mini donuts, holiday cookies and Grinch gear. I love the crooked Christmas tree. It was so pretty!! They light the tree every half hour when it gets darker and I love that because it allowed everyone a fair chance to see the tree lighting show. It was a mini show that lasted about 10 minutes and right after the Who-liday singers came out to sing. You can meet all the characters that perform on stage. After they perform, they go to the picture spot where you can take a Christmas card perfect picture with the tree in the back. "Snow" comes out when the tree is lit. I'm so glad I was able to go to this. It was my first time and probably won't be my last time. The whole park is decorated beautifully. Make sure to also go on the tram tour because when you get to the part where the set of the Who's live, they all come out to do a special holiday performance for you!! Do not miss this!! I think everyone should try to check it out if they can!! It's for sure worth it if you have a season pass as it is already included!! read more

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for the last four years and it's always a wonderful time! Universal does an amazing job at transforming the park into Whoville and really bringing to life the spirit of this classic tale. One of the many highlights is taking a picture with the Grinch, who is just as sarcastic and hilarious as Jim Carrey! I'd recommend to take a pic with the Grinch and Max during the day because the night time is always packed. No matter what, it's still worth it to take a pic with him :) Also, don't forget to catch the tree lighting! It's beautifully lit up with vibrant colorful lights, I felt like I was actually in Whoville!! Overall, Grinchmas is a good time and I highly recommend coming here to get into the spirit of the holidays :) what better way to spend it with a fun Green man! read more

Grinchmas - Christmas tree! - Christmas Trees Near Me - Universal City, California

Our Christmas day plans went awry, and we were left twiddling our thumbs for something to do. We are season pass holders, and had received the email offering us a Grinchmas pass for a day that was supposed to be a blackout day for our type of pass. By the time our Christmas plans were canceled, all of the dates offered were already sold out :( By now, we really wanted to go and had our hearts set on our son's first Grinchmas for the holiday. I called Universal member services, spoke with a very sweet girl who then talked to her manager and together, they worked something out and found an opening. I am still so grateful! We went early Christmas day, spent the entire day and left in the evening after a fun-filled Grinchmas experience. What it's like: They have a "Whoville" area set up, with a large stage and a Dr. Seuss crazy tall and bendy Christmas tree- a fabulous backdrop for family photos! There are tons of Dr. Seuss characters hanging out, playing with the kids- and I mean characters! They were hilarious!!! My son absolutely adored the very talented football Who character, and the postal Who lady. There are setups in a circle surrounding the stage and seating area, where you can find food, Grinch movie automobiles (so cool!) and of course, little scenes where you can meet and get a photo with a true-to-character Grinch (looks exactly like Jim Carey in character in the movie!) You can even take photos with the dog! Cindy Lou does an adorable story time at the foot of the stage, and there is the Whoville post office, where you can send a postcard from Whoville! There are constant shows on the stage, including a Whoville boy band that is so entertaining, even for adults! If you are worried there won't be enough to entertain your little ones, trust me, that won't be a problem :) We were here for the entire day and still hadn't seen every Whoville show. The studio tram tour features a quickie Whoville show along the way too. The line for the tram was crazy long but if you are a 2 person party, you can get called ahead to fill empty seats. Definitely consider breaking your party up if you want to avoid the 1 hour + wait in the line. Also, they don't allow strollers for the tram, but we went ahead and left our son in the stroller for the first 45 minutes or so, then my husband opened the gate and put it at the stroller park, without us losing our spots in line. That saved us 45 minutes of holding our baby and didn't put anyone out. Just a tip... it was COLD. From about 1 pm on, it just kept getting colder. I strongly suggest wearing layers and bringing a coat, hat, scarf and gloves...even blankets for the little ones.... unless of course, you plan to buy some Harry Potter cloaks and scarves :) My husband was wearing a light sweater and his coat- he was still frozen. Starbucks is right around the corner from Whoville but it's so packed, it's only worth going for that hot chocolate, because it's warm inside! It's worth it to see at least one "Tree lighting" in Whoville. I believe it starts at 5 pm or 5:30 and occurs every 30 minutes. It's an adorable little mini show, and the little ones go crazy over the falling snow finale! Super cute! Oh, parking- since it's Christmas, there's quite a bit of available parking at the subway station, at the bottom of the hill. You can park there for free, then use the bridge to cross the street and catch the tram up the hill to the park. It's a bit cold, but not a bad option if you want to save yourself the $30 parking fee for parking at the top of the hill. In the end, this turned out to be our best family Christmas ever- we had such a blast and seeing our son with a smile on his face and joy in his eyes the entire time, was such a heartfelt gift to my husband and I. This was awesome! Everyone stayed in character the whole day, and the Grinch was extremely animated and funny. My niece loved Max, the dog from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." I personally enjoyed the tree lighting and artificial snow fall. I recommend taking your family here, and as for tips, everything is much prettier after dark (around 6pm). We were so excited that they last minute opened up the Grinchmas to passholders with blackout dates. We found a great rate on a hotel and jumped at the chance to get our picture taken with the Grinch and all those of whoville! The mayor of whoville was top notch, he was very personable and their noses looked so real, just like the movie. I would have to say, I was a bit concerned about using real dogs, but it looks like they swapped them out regularly. It was so exciting to see the set on the backlot come to life with the dance crew. The events throughout the day were fantastic from story time to the tree lighting at night! I would say better crowd control and isle control is in order though, we got there early and people stood in the isle at the last minute blocking our view from the seats which we had been waiting patiently for quite some time. Overall the magic of Universal and the Grinch were spot on! read more

There is a really long line to get a couple of photos with the Grinch. But while you are waiting in line on the stage there is a show every 30 min. I also recommend you take a photo with Max. All the Whoville cast were nice, friendly, funny and silly with the kids. We had a great time! read more
