This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. This is one of those places that reminds you how small we used to be - I'm only 5ft 7 and I stoop through the worn wooden doors. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95). The restaurant opening times are Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9.30pm. They also offer bar meals between 12 and 2 pm Mondays to Saturdays and evening meals Monday to Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

The staff are so nice, its got a friendly atmosphere, the prices are good and it is a big place so its never really packed. There is a small, basic menu with a specials board packed with more stuff They do sunday lunches and evening meals There isnt a childrens menu but they will do you either stuff like burger or chicken nuggets or you can ask for a small portion off the main menu It is also a hotel I have never stayed there, but the seperate breakfast room looks realy nice. There is a small parking area as the side and it is very close to the train station. With Barry Sidings just up the road this is a really good place to take the family out for the day After writing this review i went back about a week later and it was rubish. The food was awful, dried out, burnt chicken with a massive salad that had roses made out of tomatoes and cucumber love hearts that would have been ok if the food was any good, but realy annoying when the food was so bad. the coffee machine was broken so they brought us instant, which was fine, but they put it in a cafetiere to look like real coffee and tried to charge us the same price. Really disapointing and one of only a few times i have ever complained about food sorry to the person who thought my original review was helpful

We ate here a few months back, but the service and food was so bad it stuck in my mind! When we…read morearrived the pub was empty apart from a few old men sitting and staring at us uncomfortably from the bar. When ordering our food at the bar both my mother and I asked if we could have mashed potato instead of chips, the woman serving us didn't look happy and the old men sitting at the bar were laughing and even asked us inappropriately if we were Irish! In the end the barmaid agreed that we could have mash instead of the chips. After we sat down we could hear the old men and barmaid laughing and joking at us and they kept looking over and staring. The landlady brought our food but there were chips instead of mash on the plates!! When we told her that we had asked for mash not chips she looked really annoyed and snatched the plate from us and shouted at the old men at the bar If they don't like it they can go somewhere else! To be honest I was really upset by her behaviour and it was the last thing I expected when eating out. When she brought the food back with the mash she looked at me and insincerely apologised and then turned to the old men and the barmaid and said That's the way I am if they don't bloody like it they can go somewhere else! I was actually in shock at the attitude of these small minded people and I will never go back and have told many people to never go there!

While I've had many good nights at the Pick and Shovel over the years, there's no denying that the…read morefood, definitely lets the pub down. When I first moved to the area, the food was awesome; great value for money, delicious and a decent portion size too. By the time I left three years later, the price had gone up, the quality had gone down and the portions had shrunk considerably. Prime example; after a long night of slaving away on uni coursework, my housemate and I ventured down to the Pick and Shovel for the mighty "hangover cure" fry up - the biggest breakfast on the menu. An hour and a half after ordering, it finally arrived, colder than the draught I was sitting in yet, somehow, overcooked. This would not be the last time I had to wait an annoyingly long time for a meal, only for it to turn out below my expectations. Once or twice, these kind of mistakes can be forgiven but when they become a regular occurrence it's no longer a mistake but just poor standards. Ah. Now that I've vented my anger at the shoddy food, on to the positives. If you're not sitting down for a meal, the pub is a great place to socialise, as everyone tends to know someone there at any given time. The drinks are well priced for the surrounding student area and promotions are held on various nights of the week. There is Sky Sports, making this an ideal venue to watch a big game and the pub is always packed with sports fans on big match occassions. Also, the music is usually top notch as the jukebox is a comprehensively stocked with more tracks than Simon Cowell's iPod. So if you're looking for a social pub to watch the latest Premier League game with a pint and some friendly banter, the Pick and Shovel is a good choice. If you're after some great tasting, quality food with excellent service, I'd probably look elsewhere.

Great little pub, popular with students and locals alike. Good range or drinks and promotions (try…read morethe bayside cooler cocktail if it's available - it looks like trafic lights!). Activities (other then eating and drinking) include darts, pool, music quiz, open mic nights and guitar hero competitions on the wii. The staff are really friendly and the food is pretty good too for the money.

A.A.Gill woke up in a sweat. He had been dreaming that he was lost in the Welsh Valleys, surrounded…read moreby the people he loathed, with nowhere to eat except endless chippies, kebab houses and chinese take-aways. But he didn't know about Alfreds. Alfred's looms out of the heart of Pontypridd's market area, an oasis in a desert of unexceptional shops, caffs, and tawdry van traders. It is a roomy conversion of an old Bank building, expensively refurbished (with a sizeable grant from the EEC, I'm told) and set over two floors, the design being based on Modernist Manhattan, with exposed brick, steel beams, strip-oak flooring and bespoke contemporary artwork. A large atrium with a glass balcony looks over a sofa lounge and fireplace. Downstairs you will find a 20 metre bar, with light meals and tapas available; upstairs, a spacious twin-roomed restaurant, with food counter and openplan kitchen centrally placed. It was opened in late Summer 2004 and named after Alfred John who was the founder of Pontypridd Market. A large photographic print of this gentleman dominates the atrium. And it has survived, proof that a good restaurant can flourish anywhere. There is a Lunch Menu with a dozen choices running out at around £10 for two courses. A la carte is always available with some twenty staple choices and a changing daily Specials Board. Most of the food is on display in the refrigerated counter, where you can choose your piece of meat or fish, and even specify how you want it cooked. A help-yourself salad table and cheese selection lies alongside. A comprehensive Wine List gives you the opportunity to enjoy a glass or two at very reasonable prices, or push the boat out with a Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux. The service would melt even Gill's heart. The waiting staff consists of homely Welsh mother figures who fuss you to death, some intellectuals from the nearby University of Glamorgan, and a selection of internationals, including at today's count a Brazilian supermodel, a delightful Spanish Manuel type chappie, and a pair of Polish elopees. What's better is that your table is open season for all of them - no demarcation here - so one by one they all come past to see how you are doing. Food can go cold as you engage in lively conversation with each of them. On Fridays and Saturdays the bar downstairs morphs into a nightclub with DJ's and doormen, and genteel diners descending after a fine meal can have a bit of a shock as the Ponty Mob get down and dirty on the dancefloor. It fails to get 5 stars on one account. The owner, Nick John (same family as the eponymous Alfred), slinks around from time to time but looks straight through his guests and has never spoken to me in 4 years of custom. At least he doesn't foist himself on you. And his staff more than make up for him.

The food was delicious as usual but I've given 2 stars because the service was ridiculous tonight…read more if they cant deal with a full restaurant they shouldn't take the bookings. Waited 45 minutes for orders to be taken then another 50 for starters to arrive. Not all mains arrived together and one of the sides didn't arrive at all. Needs improvement.
