We had a challenging project - a cabin on a steep hill with a cracked foundation that needed underpinning and potentially lifting. Yes, I am a fan. Greg Gulli Construction (Greg) was the winning bid for contractors I considered for a 20' x 24' Trex deck at my cabin. Greg is a licensed contractor, straight-shooter and had excellent experience and judgment for this job. I work with contractors all the time in L.A. as I am a real estate investor. I know to be careful about contractors from experience. Greg met me on time, was professional, while personal. It's like he had a sixth sense of how I wanted the deck to look. He got the job done and he finished with all the details, like an added rain gutter, concrete pavers, trim boards around the base of the deck, etc. I did start with a contract, drawings, and an elevation I sketched. I made some aesthetic requests during construction. From the beginning his price was fair; he met me on time; he started even after snows fell; he handled the permit process with the City of Big Bear Lake; and I liked that he kept materials separate from his price. He gave me the option to source materials. Turns out I used Butcher Block for supplies as it was the same price as suppliers "down the hill" after trip charges. I will work with Greg again given the chance. Job Cost: About $10k labor; $10k materials, including a few extras. Extras: concrete pavers, facia board around base, rain gutters Communication: Text and email. Greg was very responsive. Permits: Not needed for this deck elevation. I noticed there was no guarantee of work / warranty, usually a year would be provided, but in his case he is UNABLE TO GUARANTEE THE QUALITY OF HIS WORK. He literally can't say his work would last the winter, after quoting me $3500 for the deck repair. Apparently this was considered a "band aid" repair, even though that was never conveyed to me. I wanted a full repair, no temporary fix, I could get that done for $1500. What's most upsetting is I blocked of the week from rentals for the repair, which has now costed me income. Big Bear Lake is a small town and its contractors are kept busy and hard to get in a hurry, so we were very pleasantly surprised when Greg showed up at our house the same day we called to take a look at our roof project. He spent all the time needed to talk to my husband and me and then invited us to check out the job site he was on that day. We went over that afternoon -- massive project several times the size of ours -- and it was bustling, but so orderly. We were impressed. We said yes to a very reasonable estimate, yes again to a fair increase after his inspection revealed some issues (he sent photos to illustrate), and Greg's guys got to work for us just a week later. They finished days sooner than he'd told us to allow, and left our house the same as the big, expensive project nearby -- neat, orderly and swept clean with a beautiful new roof. We hired Greg and his team to completely renovate the exterior of our cabin in Big Bear. We met several contractors and Greg's quote was fair, he was professional and a great communicator, and he had a team ready to start in 2 weeks. His team sanded and stained the entire exterior of our cabin. The wood was black with stains. They started on time, worked everyday, and got it done when they said they would. His team did an excellent job restoring the exterior wood, sanding down the beams and siding, I almost didn't want to stain! They put a lot of time and work into the prep and it really shows. The dark stain turned out amazing, we couldn't be happier. Next, Greg and his team tore down and built a brand new Trex composite deck on our very sloped lot. We sent him a drawing with trex colors and stain color and he took care of everything! The deck turned out even better than we had hoped, solid and beautiful! Once again his team worked everyday, Greg sent pictures, he was prompt and professional in all communication, and the completed deck exceeded our expectations! The deck is the best part of our whole cabin now, we could not be happier!!! Finally, Greg and his team installed all brand new dual pane windows in our old 1969 cabin and trimmed the windows on the exterior and interior. The cabin is almost unrecognizable!
