Chicken Shawarma, Sujak Hummus, Cheese Rolls, Fattoush
Teresa S.

From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you know you are in for a treat. The amazing smells make you drool immediately. On a local Sherwood Park social media page, everyone raves about this place and for good reason. It's absolutely delicious and the servings are large. There are so many things to try that I wasn't sure what to get. I decided to try a few things and everything was lovely. The chicken shawarma was soft and flavourful with rice, pickled items and an amazing thick garlic dip. The cheese rolls were melt in your mouth cane with a thinner garlic dip that was dynamite. The winner for me was the sujak hummus that had a spicy ground meat mixture on top. Served with pitas it was so rich in flavour and tasted even better the next day. The salad is so simple yet incredibly balanced and tasty. The dressing is so good. This will absolutely not be my last visit and it's the kind of food I will be dreaming about. We did takeout but if you would like to eat in they do have a few tables.

Great food, small restaurant, we order from here for work. All our employees loved the food. They use to be known as Gregg Mediterranean Restaurant, which our employee were disappointed when they closed at 25 Sioux Rd, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 4C7. Glad to report that Gregg Express has the same great good at their new location.

I stumbled across this place last night. Originally I had planned to go to Cafe Haven with my date for dinner (my bad, they are closed for dinner). Gregg's is located pretty much next door so we decided to give it a try. This restaurant is on the smaller side and was empty when we arrived but within half an hour it filled up. It might be best to call ahead and make reservations especially on weekends. The waitress mentioned they make almost everything there and in small batches every few days. We started by trying their dip trio. It was delicious, especially their labneh (best I've had)! My boyfriend ordered the falafel wrap, and I the tabouli. They nailed the falafel wrap. The tabouli was meh. It was a lot of parsley and not much of anything else. I would have enjoyed it as a side salad but not as a main meal. That's ok though because I filled up on the dip trio and pita bread and added a little tabouli with every bite. Overall we were super happy to have discovered this place and would recommend it to others. The service was pleasant and friendly.

Interesting name for a restaurant who's owner is not named Greg. After enquiring with the owners about the name, I was told that this newly opened restaurant in the former Café de Ville Sherwood Park location, is named after one of the top restaurants in Beirut Lebanon. Big shoes to fill and big reputation to try to duplicate. First let me start with letting you know that I am of Lebanese decent and regularly eat an prepare mid-eastern foods. As can be expected, I looked at Gregg Mediterranean's menu with a bit of apprehension, having been too often disappointed by similar restaurants. I went there for lunch with my friend who was not very familiar with mid-east cuisine. The menu dishes' ingredients are partially listed but the dishes themselves are not well described. When I asked the waitress about how some of the dishes are prepared, she was not sure and I believe may have guessed. I say this because whe I asked if the cheese sambusik was in phylo pastry and fried, she said it was phylo but baked. It was not phyli and was fried. That said, it was delicious and I highly recommend it. The pastry was buttery and flaky. The cheese perfectly melted and mixed with parsley and spices. We ordered a salad each and were more than grateful that the waitress recommended we have half orders as we also ordered a half mezze platter. The half orders were only $4.00 each and could have been a meal by themselves! I had the tabouli, which surprised me by being made with regular white onions instead of green onions. It was still quite good and I would definitely order it again. My friend had the fattoush, I stole a bite and it was perfect with just the right amount of summac used. Our mezze platter came with the above mentionef sambusik, kibbe, spinach fatayers, and haloumi cheese. There were 4 of each mezze and various Lebanese pickles, cucumber slices and tomatoes. The fresh veggies were perfect and ripe! Nice surprise for January in Alberta. The kibbe was a tasty mix of ground beef, cracked wheat, onions and allspice, offered in nice size balls and unbelievably well stuffed, not half empty like others that I have tasted. The spinach fatayer were not as well stuffed. They could use a bit more spinach in them but they were very tasty and not too lemony. The halloumi cheese was nice and chewy, well spiced but a bit too salty for my taste. It could have used a bit of soaking or rinse to remove some of the saltiness. Accompanying our meal were a basket of pita and dipping yogurt/sour cream (no extra charge). We were also given a complimentary hummous. After the meal we were given a small plate of sliced apples and bananas, lightly sprinkled with caramel and chocolate sauce. The waitress told us that everyone gets a complimentary fruit nappy. What a lovely touch. The fruit eas quite tasty and the sauce was just the right amount to make plain fruit more exciting. There is a nice dessert menu with cakes, baklava, and rice pudding. I had my heart set on the rice pudding but they had run out and I was told that they were making more later on in the day. I was disappointed but figured I would survive. My friend ordered a Monte Cristo coffee (it was delicious according to her). We stayed to chat and enjoy the warm fireplace as she sipped on her coffee. Ten minutes later, the eaitres came to let us know that if we stayed a bit longer, the chef would have some fresh pudding for us, on the house! Of course we waited!! They brought us to "to-go" containers filled with hot rice pudding, which I devoured as soon as I got home! It was rose-water scented and lightly dusted with cinnamon. Mmm, a perfect ending to a delicious meal. Just like my Teta (grandma) used to make! This is definitely a "must go to" restaurant with generous and tasty dishes. They know what good customer service is and go beyond it!

A girlfriend and I decided to do a "ladies who lunch" afternoon and chose this new restaurant in Sherwood Park. We did so with some trepidation as my friend is Egyptian/Lebanese and knows what good mediterranean food should taste like. So, did it pass her taste test? Well, first let me tell you what I thought. The menu was interesting but I didn't understand what most of the dishes were. It would have been nice to have a bit of a description of what the dishes contained for us, the uninitiated. I was able to get the advice and input from my friend and I chose a half order of the Fattoush, my friend chose the tabouli salad and we shared a half mezza. For the half mezza we chose grilled halloume cheese, fried kibbie, spinach fatayer and cheese sambusik. If you like Greek saganaki, you will love the grilled halloume cheese. It is soooo salty and nummy! I stuffed my warm pita bread with the cheese and some of my fattoush for a tasty treat! The fried kibbie was moist, flavourful and was amazing with some of the complimentary hummus they brought out for us or the yogurt dip that came with the mezza. I enjoyed the fattier and the sambusik as well, the pastry was flavourful and was obviously not a prepackaged type. My friend wanted to try their rice pudding but there was none ready, but after chatting for a while at our table, the waitress came back and said if we were willing to wait about 10 minutes, the chef was just finishing up a batch. About 15 minutes later the waitress appeared with two to-go containers. They were well worth the wait, as it was absolutely delicious. Our lunch was very reasonable and came to $54 for the two of us, including two drinks. Now back to my friend. Apparently, this is food just like her Gramma used to make. I think that qualifies as a high compliment!

My coworkers are frequent visitors for lunch at Gregg's and today I decided to try it out as well. They have a full one page menu with photos showing all the lunch specials that are $10. I tried the chicken shawarma. It came with a side of fattoush salad, a big helping of rice/noodle combo and small pieces of chicken on top. I was very surprised at the amount of food I got for such a cheap price! I was also worried that the rice wasn't going to taste like much but it was super flavourful without being I've powering. The only thing was that the fattoush was pretty heavy on the sumac. Great lunch spot if you work in the Sherwood park area.

Labneh salad. Ask for the dressing on the side as I found it overpowering. Same for the Greek salad.

Newer local Mediterranean Greek style restaurant. Saw the good reviews and checked it out. We have been to Greece twice. Small inside but nice. In a strip mall. Quiet and good for couples. Was busy on a Friday. Mediterranean music playing was nice. Service was excellent. Food was average however. Our Shawarma was very spicy for some reason and I'm no slouch. Had the burps for hours. The rice was good. The Labneh salad had too much vinegary dressing and there was very little feta cheese. Their Greek salad is not true Greek as it comes with lettuce and they skimp on the feta. Good place to try once.

Chicken Shawarma platter, fantastic

I…read morethink what happened is we ordered the wrong dis, I expected the lamb with side potatoes and vegetables to be real lamb.....like slices of medium rare lamb. my lamb was just shredded (like pull pork). It turned me off completely. my husbands's pork ribs were very good. vegetables (except carrots) were overdone. The two dishes, with unexceptional food cost us around $80 with tip. we had nothing else, no hors d'ouvres no alcohol, no drinks except water. I know we will not return. like I said maybe we did not know what to order. service was exceptional.

I am late on posting this but I have to get it out! This place was amazing! I enjoyed the food here…read moreso much! I love Greek food but I haven't tried Cosmo's yet even though it's been open for like 20 years. If anyone is planning on trying it with the COVID restrictions I would recommend doing so now, because when we went there was a lot of seating with lots of space between people! The food was just amazing. We started with the hummus and pita, and then I tried the Psari Paki! Both were delicious! However, it was the dessert that really stole the show for me. The owner/chef makes the desserts fresh daily and they are true Greek desserts! I loved them! They were called Ekmek and Galacto Buriko - pastries with custard, honey, almonds, etc. OMG they were heavenly. I would come back to this place for the desserts alone. The service was awesome. We came on a Sunday and had a friendly server who had been working there for many years! So she knew all the details and ins/outs of what we were ordering. She gave us tonnes of recommendations as well! 10/10 experience - I would recommend this spot to anyone interested in trying some of the Greek restaurants in YEG.

This place has gone downhill with the chefs and menu! A couple of us ordered the slow cooked lamb…read moreand it was a terrible disappointment. It was very over cooked like the scrapings off the bottom of a burnt pot roast. Tough, dried out and chopped up in pieces. Some at our table ordered the rack of lamb but I noticed the lamb was not all finished. The lamb was all overcooked! On top of that, it came with a side of mashed potatoes - not at all Greek style! The calamari I ordered was plentiful but lots of batter with not much flavor except for the yogurt (which was supposed to be tzatziki) on the side and some onion. The entertainment with the Belly Dancer was amusing. The service was exceptional from our waitress and kept everyone happy with quick service and smiles. The Waitress and Belly Dancer may have saved a couple stars for Yiannis food tonight! My wife's prawn saganaki was served in a small bowl, not a lot of sauce and not a whiff of ouzo. Pretty small serving, compared to previously ordering the same item. The order of Greek potatoes turned out to be 1.5 boiled potatoes cut in a few pieces with a slice of lemon and leaky yogurt (again, meant to be tzatziki). Pretty sure this is not how Greek potatoes are done. A friend ordered beef souvlaki, it was so dry and so burned, that she almost had to use all her muscles to pull out the pieces of meat from the burned out stick. I think she got exhausted trying to chew this dry meat and eventually left it all in the plate. Needless to say, this place can safely remove the "Greek" from their claim as nothing was Greek. Also, needless to say, we will not be going there...EVER!

Yiannis Taverna has been a longtime fixture in Old Strathcona for as long as I can remember. They…read moreopened back in 1990, proving that their traditional Greek cuisine - 35 years strong - is a reliable mainstay, withstanding decades on the vibrant and ever-evolving Whyte Ave. It's been a hot minute since my last visit and I figured that it was due time. They were named Best Mediterranean Restaurant 2021 in the Edmonton Journal and this was enough to stoke my interest. A reservation is best, especially on a warm summer evening when their large garage-front doors are open to the outside air. Parking can be tricky on Whyte but with some luck you might grab a spot out front. I visited on a Saturday evening and despite my reservation, I was still unable to snag a coveted patio table beneath their signature blue and white awning. There was an empty table near the patio that they also wouldn't let me occupy because it was "already reserved." (Didn't I have a reservation?) I settled on a spot further inside the dining room, lovely nonetheless. The dining area is quite large, occupying two levels. Full of original exposed brick and beautiful painted murals, the space is designed to embody the feeling of sitting in a Greek taverna. The most striking element of decor is certainly the wall of glowing kako mati, or evil eyes, used to protect against negative energy. I had heard that traditional dancers entertain on Saturday evenings but no such dancers appeared. Maybe I was dining too early in the night? To start my visit, I was looking for a summery cocktail that would match the Greek feast that I was prepared to enjoy. Between the Ouzo Lemonade and the Aegean Fizz (Greek brandy, Cointreau, lemon, soda - $14.00), I chose the latter. This drink succeeded at being a fun effervescent summertime cocktail, however it was very boozy. I had a difficult time finishing it because the alcohol was quite strong. The menu is ideally crafted for sharing and in Greek tradition you can imagine large families feasting together over plentiful platters of various foods. This exact spirit is captured in Yiannis' Mezethes menu, filled with an abundant selection of appetizers. Why try only a few when you can simply order the Mezethes Platter (Dip platter, Greek salad, dolmades, meatballs, spanakopita, and kalamari - $49.00) and taste them all? (Or at least a lot of different items.) The dip platter arrived first, followed by the second course of everything else later on. Consisting of Melitzano Salata (Roasted Eggplant Spread), Revithia (Hummus), and Taramosalata (Caviar Mousse), all served with pita bread, it was fun to dig into this dish and to sample each of the different flavours. The Melitzano Salata made with garlic and tahini was my favourite because I liked the rough texture and full-on garlic punch. The Revithia was fairly standard, made with garbanzos and tahini. And finally, the Taramosalata was quite exciting with its mayonnaise-like consistency, made with lemon and infused with oil. As a caviar mousse, this dip felt the most luxurious. The pita itself was nothing special and somewhat hard and dry. It could have been purchased at a grocery store, for all I knew. The rest of the Mezethes arrived on a big platter and consisted of many colourful items to explore. Served with an ample helping of Tzatziki (Cow's Milk Yogurt Dip) made with dill and garlic, it's the ketchup of Greek food! It goes with everything! I loved trying each and every item on the plate, inadvertently taking myself on a little Greek adventure through food. The Horiatiki Salata (Greek Salad) was very fresh, bursting with bright juicy tomatoes, English cucumbers, peppers, onions, and kalamata olives. (I was happy to find kalamata olives dotting every dish.) Adorned generously with creamy feta cheese, the salad was excellent. The Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves) were a surprise! Stuffed with minced beef and rice, I often find them dry and unremarkable. However, at Yiannis the dolmades were full of juicy flavour and one of the best items on the plate! I never thought that I could be impressed with dolmades and here we are! The Keftedes (Yiayia's Meatballs) were a similar experience. Made with minced beef and onions, the meatballs were juicy, flavourful, and not at all dry. Yiayia knows what she's doing! (But of course she does.) The Spanakopita (Spinach & Cheese Pie) is another dish that I often find underwhelming in other restaurants. Not so at Yiannis! Light phyllo pastry was wrapped around fresh baby spinach, dill, and creamy feta, creating a delectable bite. Maybe some of the best spanakopita that I've ever had! Finally, the platter included Kalamarakia (Crispy Squid) served with diced onion and tzatziki. I found the crunchy batter to be really heavy-handed and it was difficult to tell if there was any squid within each bite at all. Overall, there were a lot of great things about this platter and it was an optimal way to share with my co-diners and for us to tas
