O had to replace my steps to my basement. Greg came and took a look and said he could not fix them. He would not guarantee his work. He said it was not safe. He gave an estimate and came on time. When it came to replace these steps again he came on time, said it would take one day to redo. True to his word, the stairs were redone, stronger and better than the original stairs. Hi all! It's hard to hire the right contractor, especially for a new home owner (like me). I benefited from those reviews  that were detailed instead of blanket endorsements or rejections, both of which can be misleading. With that in mind, I'll try to give a hopefully useful account of my experience with Gregg Home Improvements.  My project entailed preparing a flat roof for a pedestal roof deck system. At first I interviewed roof deck installers. They said I don't need to do anything to the roof since the last time I had a leak was over a year ago and the roof was relatively new  (6 years old on a new development). However, putting up a deck is a major expense, and so I didn't want to install it before I was sure I would have no further issues with leaks. Also I didn't trust the deck installer's assessment of the roof since their interest was to get the decking gig, not the integrity of the underlying roof structure. If there was a leak later and I'd have to rip off the entire deck again, it wouldn't be their responsibility. So I decided to do extra due diligence and interview roofers too. Among those I considered, Gregg Home Improvements stood out immediately thanks to its owner Alex Gregg. Alex was immediately trustworthy,  especially due to the fact that he didn't try to sell me the most expensive option for my roof, as many of the other roofers did. Instead he took time explaining what was necessary in his view and how he'd go about the work. He was the only contractor who immediately offered references, even without me asking for them (YOU MUST CALL REFERENCES AND GET INFO ABOUT THE COMPANY YOU HIRE!). I called every one of them. It was clear they were not "planted", e.g. often contractors ask friends or family to pose as references. In Alex's case they were actual references. I could tell by the fact that a couple of them were as detailed in their review as I try to be here, including bringing up some issues that came up, instead of offering rote endorsements. With that said, across the board, everyone agreed that Alex is 100% trustworthy.  So I hired him and I actually talked him into a more extensive and more costly way to protect the roof. This entailed a "roof-over", which means putting a brand new roof over an existing one.  I really wanted to make sure the roof will hold, support the deck, and not have a leak in the next 15 years at least... I want to also mention that there were some bumps along the way. In this context it's important for anyone hiring a contractor to understand that in many cases the person representing the company is not always the person actually executing the work. Most companies have various crews that they send on different jobs, and so you're really at the mercy of whatever crew happens to be working on your project. Alex was here for some but certainly not all parts of the actual work. His crew seemed good at first, but unfortunately when they were finished, there were issues ranging from partially sloppy work that could compromise the roof to cosmetic missteps. This is where my trust in Alex comes in. I knew that he would correct any complaints I'd have. I knew this because he inherited the company from his dad, who was in business for 40 years. I knew Alex wasn't going tarnish his dad's legacy, much less his own reputation.  When I complained about some of the work his crew did, he was immediately attentive. He not only corrected the issues, he went further. He had his crew redo all parts of the job that were less than perfect, he also came back to do some of the critical work himself. Beyond that he offered to correct the cosmetic issues by offering an extra coat of cold roofing material ON TOP OF the new layer of APP. This will add another layer of protection for the already fortified roof. This part cannot be completed until next year, since the APP 180 needs to air out (so that all of its oils dissipate and the silicon based Gaco product can actually stick to the APP). I know Alex is not going to run away. I know he will complete the job when the time is right. My main considerations when interviewing roofers was the warranty they'd provide. Unless you have a manufacturer's warranty (which is legally so unfavorable for clients that it's almost not worth it) your warranty is a "workmans warranty"  - basically your contractor's pledge to you to correct any issues over the period of the warranty. This means your warranty is only as good as the company that gives it to you. So it's important to estimate how long that company will be in business (when the company folds your warranty is worth ...nothing). I felt confident that Alex's warranty will hold. The way he addressed the issues I raised confirmed my choice.  In summary, I think there are companies that are more specialized in roofing. But it's hard for me to imagine any company as professional in making their clients happy as Alex. I will hire him again. He is a man of his word, and he acts accordingly. read more

Call Greg if you need anything - he is the nicest guy and can do pretty much any job, big or small. His timelines are tight and he is very responsive. Plumbing, electrical, demo, and carpentry is what he did for us and it was great. read more

We had a leak coming in on an interior wall when it rained. We thought we would have to open exterior wall to find and repair the leak. Gregg and his crew found it was leak was coming from our roof. After repairs were made the leak stopped!!! Gregg saved us so much money and wasted time but most of all was honest and did a great job.
