Shut The Gate is a boutique winery, specialising in many types of riesling, but they also source other grape varieties for their sav blanc and red blends. Prices are around the $20-$25 mark, and well worth it! The labels are beautiful too, some done by a London artist based on fairytales with the theme of 'shutting a gate' ;) Oh, and they have a couple of winery cats - that's definitely worth an extra star!

The house is set up for tastings for small groups and couples in nooks and on couches. Its the most relaxed and fun tasting in the clare area. no giant benches and feeling like they want you gone. Sit out side on the patio on a sunny day and enjoy a glass of something something, you won't regret it. One of my favorite wine producers, which was only enhanced by this experience.

It stretches along a roughly 20km drive from Clare to Auburn and is home to more than 40 wineries. It's famous for the Riesling trail and two very famous cellar doors to visit are Annie's Lane and Knappstein. Along the way you can visit historic towns like Burra or Mintaro, which I didn't find that spectacular though. Overall it's a nice, cute and small region but some of the towns were very deserted and on our 3-day trip we sometimes had difficulties finding a place that was open for dinner. If you have the choice between the Barossa and the Clare, head to the former. However, if you've done the Barossa, give it a go and make up your own mind.

Beautiful fruit driven wine, and I will struggle to decide whether to drink it now or leave them for a couple of years. Either way it's going to be good. We remembered the Hummer from our last visit, which reminded me how long it's been since we had been to the winery. I'm not a huge fan of merlot, usually finding it a bit flat for my palate, but this is a beauty and they don't make it very often. We couldn't resist it and were prepared to pay the higher price tag. We bought a few red ales while we were there. Called the monkey's uncle, the red malts gives it a complex, lively character and slightly bitter to finish. It has everything on the palate the label lays claim too... Caramel, treacle, and yes even toffee apple. Damn good! I'll be keeping a bit of this in the fridge from now on. You can't taste the beer at the winery, so either take my word for it, or try it at one of the local pubs on tap. A very pleasant visit!

A year ago I would have given this restaurant 5 stars: it has been one of our favourites for20+…read moreyears. However, after going there for lunch on Thursday I have downgraded it to three stars. The reasons for this are: The menus are presented on an A4 sheet of green paper, food on one side and wine on the other. Not the class of presentation we are used to here. The fish was the only menu item listed as GF; not every gluten intolerant person wants fish for lunch. We were specifically asked up front if we had any special dietary requirements but even so we were not told of any other GF alternatives. The home-made chorizo was slightly too dry and lacking in flavour. A sauce or relish was definitely required here. My wife had the pork belly. The waitress asked if she wanted it entrée or main size and said the main had 5 pieces of pork compared to 3 on the entrée. When the bill came we were staggered to see that to increase a $23 entrée to main was charged at an additional $28! I do not know how they can justify this. On the plus side the caramelised onion and Brie bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the bread roll was also very good, even though it was late in being served (we were beginning to think the butter dish was for decoration). Sorry Skillogalee, but you are no longer one of our 'must visit' establishments.
