City of Anderson, Indiana - Amazing historical architecture

    City of Anderson, Indiana

While I'm not a huge fan of actually "rating" a city or town, it's a great opportunity to talk about the many wonderful places in Indiana. I've been to Anderson a few times during my wheeling. I've also been for church and work events. Anderson is the seat of Madison County and has a population just under 55,000. As most know, Anderson was once an industrial hotbed and has at various times hosted the manufacturing of 17 different vehicles. While auto manufacturing really gave the city its fame, as that industry has declined in the area so has Anderson economically. Thomas Broderick Jr. has been the Anderson mayor since 2016. Major attractions include the lovely Paramount Theatre, Mounds State Park, Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, concerts at Reardon Auditorium (Anderson University), and a few other museums and such. The Church of God is based here in Anderson. I have friends who live here, however, I'll admit that I don't really find Anderson to be a true "destination" city. While I'd easily do a day trip here, I'd be hard-pressed to make it a weekend getaway. The city is fairly accessible, though it's worth noting that downtown is a historic landmark. There are hotels/motels here, the curb cuts are decent, and I've generally found the people friendly here. I recently visited the Paramount again and it's definitely a downtown highlight with its historic marquee and incredible auditorium that was looking even better than remembered the last time I was in Anderson. Overall, I'd call Anderson a bit of a hidden gem. It has a few fun touristy spots, lots of nature, the remnants of its industrial past, some cool museums, and a growing restaurant scene. While I wouldn't necessarily call it a destination spot, a trip to Anderson, Elwood, and other small towns in Madison County could easily be worth a weekend.

The area appears to be a host to downtown festivities. Unfortunately, the Historical Society was not opened during my Thursday morning visit. I would have liked to have learned more about the city and see if there is a walking tour. I was also disappointed that no restaurants were opened in the downtown area around noon time. There's plenty of free street parking but limited restroom options. I will return to learn more and report back.

The meeting with Santa was one of the best experiences we've ever had with a Santa Claus! They have a separate Santa Shack and families can go in one at a time so it's a more intimate and meaningful experience than having a line of people crowded behind you while you're trying to talk to Santa. The Santa was so jolly and sweet and my kids were all smiles the entire time. We had time to take pictures without a crowd around which we really enjoyed as well, and I'm definitely making these shots our family Christmas cards for the year! I'd love if there was a way for the farm to cover the train and tractor with a clear tarp if possible so that it wouldn't be so cold while you're looking at the lights. But also understand that you will be outside on about a 20 minute ride while you enjoy the lights so make sure you bundle up!

At…read moreother farms in the area the Autumn season felt 'festive' - with music playing, decorations and smiling staff. Piney Acres seemed not quite ready for visitors. First, the pricing for entrance at the register didn't state what was charged for children under 16. Instead I paid the adult price for myself and two kids under age 6. The farms website says children up to age three pay $5. My son just turned three. Not a huge deal but kind of annoying. For $30 we couldn't go on the train or the big slide or the fossil dig. We could go on the cow train but I never found anyone standing near it. Did I have to go find someone? I still have no idea. My son wanted to do it. The fun things we did do were play in the 'sand' (more like fine gravel) play area, see the pigs and goats and pick pumpkins to buy. One thing we wanted to do but didn't was the bounce pad. It was filthy! Covered in sun baked mud. My oldest was really disappointed. The staff here were nice when we interacted with them, but they all seemed very preoccupied with talking amongst one another. I waited quite a while to have someone tally up my pumpkin order. No one seemed to know who was in charge of that task. I will say I bought a fair number of pumpkins and was fully expecting the total to be over $50 and it was only $29. So I guess I am calling it even on the overcharge for entry.

It was clean, the carpet looked nice, the AMF lanes were fantastic condition. I am a competent bowler (207 ave RH and 160 LH), the house shot was a fun shot, not too difficult. They do have a sport shot league which is really cool, I did not ask if they could put a shot down for me like some of mte houses back home... The scoring system has some neat games you can play for practice time too. Lowest score, odds (you get points for odd counts of pins) and evens, you can set up 9 pin no-tap for those birthday parties or just for giggles. My only complaint was once I got into the system and chose a different type of scoring I could not figure out how to get out of it, I could only change to a different type of game. But it was no bother as I was practicing. For you serious bowlers in the area, they do have specials and passes for a reduced rate. So if you plan on bowling a lot then you can save some money. Just ask.

We celebrated Devin's 2nd birthday without him on this earth with us at Championship Lanes. Last…read moreyear we had a great time, and we had way more people and absolutely zero problems. But let me share our HORRIBLE experience and discuss Angie's absolutely disrespectful customer service. She approached the lanes that my mom reserved and PAID for and stated there were people bowling without shoes. Understood, my mom had already began addressing this issue, and was sending people to get their shoes. Then Angie says "AND YOURE SMOKING WEED" ... let's pause for a moment. I am not smoking anything first off all. We are in a public establishment as a group full of black peoples, let's be real. Who is stupid enough to smoke weed INSIDE THE PLACE. Secondly, IF someone was smoking weed, the WHOLE place would've been a huge cloud. So, let's not falsely accuse a group of people like this. Okay, cool. She walks away. In a matter of minutes, she is back and yelling in my moms face as we are trying to celebrate my deceased brother's birthday. If you know me, I'm cool, calm, and collected and stay out of it, but the moment she raised her voice at my mother, I intervened because what we won't tolerate is this level of disrespect when we have paid and are not causing any issues. Now, someone may have had a vape and idk their rules against that, but that is absolutely NOT the same as smoking weed as she accused. But we won't talk about the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke as you enter the building. At this point several people within our group are livid because Angie is raising her voice and speaking to people as if they are not adults, accusing people of smoking, and just outright disrespectful. Of course she tried kicking us out. Okay, kick us out but give us the money back because we paid a lot of money between the reservation, shoes, and everyone ordered food and drinks. So, we'll leave but we want to be refunded. After I had a word with her and expressed that she needed to reevaluate her customer service skills because it's not what you say, it's how you say it, and she was flat out disrespectful, she said "you know what, just bowl". But that's not even the end. As we are wrapping up, saying goodbyes, Angie calls the police which I suspected because she was hiding on the phone as I was returning shoes. There are literally police officers outside in the parking lot as we are leaving. At this point we felt targeted. Not to pull the race card, but a group of black people having a good time, celebrating a loved one with some friendly competition is too much to ask for, I guess. Y'all can tell me what that sounds like. NO ONE WAS FIGHTING. EVERYONE PAID FOR WHAT THEY RECEIVED. NO ONE WAS CAUSING A SCENE EXCEPT FOR ANGIE AND HER DISRESPECT. This was absolutely HORRIBLE customer service from Championship lanes, specifically Angie, and personally I would not recommend this place. If she's the manager, owner, or whatever, she needs to take a customer service training and reevaluate her ability to run a facility because that's not it AT ALL. I'm not even the one to cause a scene about something but they need to PROPERLY address her poor skills and treatment towards us. OH, they have untagged themselves or blocked me from my Facebook review!
