Nice pretty easy trail that loops around the lake (some parts are thin & steep, but made it through with the dog) . Absolutely loved this place on our vacation. Quite peaceful. I counted 6 shelters too so I imagine in spring /summer it gets used a lot. They have porta potties and a 2-stall bathroom for women & a bathroom for men too. Hand washing station outside. We came during the week of October 13th & the foliage was beautiful.

Prices are extremely affordable (coming from DC and being used to paying up to $40 for two people to paddle board for 30 mins, which is normal for me). For $3 or so you can take out a kayak per person per hour. If you're fishing make sure to bring all you need and purchase your license AND additional $5 permit to fish there. They sell small snacks and ice cream. Bathroom situation is dicey considering it's a porta-potty but hey honestly all in all I would come again and I would spend days on end here either by myself or with family.

You can rent paddle boats, and quite a few kayak here. Yet the fishing isn't all that. It certainly is beautiful in some areas, but I wish more fish opportunities. Crockett Park is owned and managed by the county. This is impressive. What I usually do here is go during astronomy nights, with a group called NOVAC. Light pollution is less of a problem than say the DC area. A very nice group of men and women. Parking is never a problem, and it is a family friendly place.

We had to wait and listen to them argue about who was in the wrong and was told hopefully they give you a refund. They might not because it's a process so they may give you a pass to come back a few times. Thankfully a boat came, so the problem fixed itself. So we enjoyed the boat for a few hours and was told the park closes as 8. The guy on the dock called for boats to be back at 7:40/7:50. We packed up headed back to the dock and unloaded. When we got back the employee on the dock was recording us as we were trying to park because we were struggling to straighten out rather than help us then when he did help us he said "you guys took forever I'm trying to go home". That was around 7:55. We walked up and returned the vests at exactly 7:58 and the lady that sold us the boat and license was waiting there and said "you're late" and took the vests and walked off. Please keep in mind we were only told park closes at 8. No one said a thing about having to be back a certain time before 8. Enjoyed the boat itself but the customer service was absolute trash.

I visited on an early Sunday morning. I parked off Avery Road and there were a few cars already there. The change of scenery was nice. I enjoyed the scenic and peaceful views!

The lake itself is gorgeous, and always so picturesque.... I have hiked the Lakeside Trail a few times, which is about three miles and mostly wooded, with two creek crossings (one easy, the other more difficult, requiring stepping on stones that could be slippery or even, at times, underwater). The first time we hiked the trail we did get lost as we skipped the difficult creek crossing and ended up going straight, and almost right back out of park...so bring water to drink and wear (or bring) a pair of shoes that can handle the creek water (it's not safe to swim--so I'm assuming, or wade around--in). UPDATE: Part of the Lakeside Trail has construction going on around it (near the easier stream crossing) and last time we encountered it we decided to turn around rather than trying to get around the mess...but there are other parts of the trail to explore, including hiking along the path that' intersects with Rock Creek Trail (or you can go around the other end of the Lakeside Trail, close to the Avery Park entrance...) Usually when we're here we don't do the entire trail, anyway, but turn around at various points, depending upon how long we want to walk. Although the park does get busy on weekends (and it can be difficult to get a parking spot at the Avery Park lot) the further along the trails you go the less people you'll encounter. Weekdays are also pretty peaceful. I look forward to visiting the Meadowside Nature Center when it reopens--this is located at the other park entrance at Muncaster Mill Road.

But it was closed last time I went through Marshall as construction was not yet completed. It's located just off of Route 55 just east of beautiful, downtown Marshall, VA. It's open now, I visited yesterday as my neighbors were holding a birthday party for their 3 year old daughter at the park. They reserved a covered pavilion which had plenty of tables, a grill, and was close to lots of playground equipment for the mass of writhing kids attending the party and now running amok through the park. The park offers a lot of park amenities - from the park web site: "Open year-round, the park boasts 8 athletic fields including baseball, softball, soccer and football. The park also features two concession stands, 8 picnic shelters, an amphitheater, three playgrounds, a two mile paved multi-use trail, 3 indoor restrooms, fishing lake, meeting room and plenty of beautifully landscaped open space. Recreational programs are available for your enjoyment." I plan to come back to walk and hike, fish the lake, and maybe even grill out some time!
