Overall, the independent living care experience is a good match for worry free living. Yes, the entrance fee can be daunting for many, as well as the monthly fee. However, the meal plan and all utilities (even cable) are included, and are truly value added. They have various floor plans to choose from. Some do mention the lack of diversity in the dining menus, but can attest they do rotate and listen to the residents regarding menu items, but you have to participate in the surveys and meetings they hold. The staff are caring and friendly. The offices are accessible to answer any questions and any paperwork is easily to file. Online updates and robocalls also inform residents of any acute issues or changes such as snow storm plans or electrical outages etc . Healthcare wise: On site flu/immunization drives along with on-site health care with adjoining CVS is a bonus! They even have a visiting dermatologist, audiologists, cardiologist, & podiatrist in addition to primary care physicians. You do have to sign up for their plan to access their on-site healthcare, but pricing is reasonable and the care is excellent! Shuttles also take you on campus and off to sites such as the grocery stores, Ft. Belvoir PX/commissary, and the metro for example. They have over 100 clubs, garden plots, putting green, golf simulator, on-site gym with pool & pickle ball, and multiple restaurants as well. They also have home health, on-site Physical Therapy, assisted living and dementia care available as the need arises. Though they do their best to keep you independent and active. read more

Wife's grandma has lived here for 10+ years. Drinks at the bar are $4-5 and tipping isn't allowed, what a deal!

We went to tour Greenspring ccrc in Springfield, Va more than one month ago. No one followed up! I called and left two message, no one has returned my calls! I wonder what kind of care will be provided if they are not returning the calls after touring! read more

This is a beautiful place and very well kept. There are many eating venues and the food is outstanding. The menu is huge! Activities abound...there are many clubs you can join. There is a physical therapy clinic right on the campus as well as a medical facility. I have visited the assisted living facility and it seems very nice. I have lived at Greenspring for 11 years and very happy with it! read more

Greenspring is a beautiful place filled with wonderful staff. They switch out the decor every couple years to make sure everything looks fresh. It is extremely clean and they really go out of their way to make sure the residents have options when it comes to food (which is delicious!!) and activities. I have often remarked that I wish such a place existed for 30 somethings! My grandfather lived there for about 20 years and loved it and we were very happy that he spent his last years in such a wonderful place. Thank you, Greenspring!!! read more

Couldn't say more about this place 20 years ago when John Erickson ran it. It is now owned by the corporation called Redwood who are completely and totally unaccessible and have ZERO interest in the residents. They are called Erickson communities because they bought John Erickson's name but are simply unrelated management companies who also have zero interest in the residents. Current and new resident monies are being spent on upgrading the the lawns, The lobbies, and the eating establishments all for the sole purposes of convincing new people to move in. There is little to no consideration for the existing elderly residents; and if anything gets accomplished it takes months; or most often it never happens at all. Consider the long-term implications of staying here as the quality will continue to decline as Entrance fees are now unmanageable for most people AND that the monthly rents are rising exponentially without any improvement or renovations for individual residents. Renters beware. read more

I toured the facilities at Greenspring and looked at some rooms. It is very nice, and I like the people that live there. Everyone is very friendly, including the staff. When it is my time, I think I would like to live there too. read more

Move in with your eyes wide open and a tight grip on your wallet. Greenspring is a beautiful place and great if you are able bodied and independent. However there's an additional charge for nearly everything and rates increase annually. What used to be a $5 fee to have a meal delivered has increased annually to now $8. Same number of steps, but each year the delivery fee increases. Their in-home support increased their rates 28%! They also changed the way they determine rates. The change cost us $14k more annually. They make money on your family member from Day 1 by investing and earning interest on the entry fee. They also charge the family an additional 3 months rent AFTER your family member passes. While we are supposed to get a percentage of the fee returned it's only a percentage and without any interest. Nonetheless they increase fees at a ridiculous rate, far exceeding the rate of inflation and the cost of living increases from Social Security. While the adage "you get what you pay for" is true, Erickson's greed results in paying an excessive amount. They claim to be a non-profit but they sure aren't against it. read more

Both my parents were in Greenspring's rehab facility for about 6 weeks in 2014. Since then (5 1/2 years!!) I have received marketing material, newsletters, etc. at least once a week at my home in INDIANA. I have called their office at least three times begging them to remove me from their mailing list, yet like the Sorcerer's Apprentice, the mindless robotic mail still keeps coming. Be aware that once you're on their list, apparently you're on it forever....... read more

I love the feeling that i know my family is safe here. Security. They have their own wall around the whole place. Tons of things for people to do. Im very happy with my family being safe read more

We recently went looking for a skilled nursing facility to place my mom and while she healed from a major brain surgery. I went there, toured of the facility and everyone seemed nice. We submitted all of our information over to them and they quickly denied my mother staying there. I called there to get some more information as to why they decided this because this was our preferred facility due to location. Not only would they not speak to me directly to tell me the exact reason, but when I called they relayed the message through their application administrator and refused to talk to me. How much more unprofessional and insensitive could one be? It's quite interesting to me that they are providing service to the elderly who have extensive health issues and need long-term care however they won't serve someone like my mother who needs a month or less of rehabilitation. I would be careful sending your loved one here. Seems there's is an accountability issue. read more

My mom went into green spring for rehab after a fall and UTI when she got really confused and couldn't do things on her own anymore. Some of the nurses were very nice, while some of the nurse aids seemed like they couldn't care less. My mom didn't care for them as she felt they were rough and aggressive with her while getting her dressed etc. I felt like the PT and OT programs were good, but it was so hard to get reports from anyone or even to know when you might have a chance to talk to them, or when they were going to come by. A few days in, my mom had gotten up by herself to go to the bathroom and had a fall. She was ok but then started talking about how she was going to some weird place at night. We thought it was just her confusion. Then we learned that the nurses were keeping her in the nursing station all night long, every night, making her sleep sitting up in a wheelchair so they could watch her as she was a fall risk, and it was on them if she fell. No one told us they were doing this, no one thought it was odd, my mom was miserable and not sleeping. So then we hired an aide to sit by her side at night until we could figure something out. The aide stayed with her and in the morning said my mom had a fever. The aide could not find a nurse at greenspring for about 45 mins to come take her temp. As I am on my way over to see her for lunch that day, I am notified my mom is not there and she was sent to ER. They said earlier that morning and they tried to call and let us know but apparently had the wrong phone number for us. Anyway the rest of the story goes, that my mom had gotten sepsis while at greenspring and ultimately passed away a couple weeks later in the hospital. Still never really found out what caused the sepsis, but I can't help but wonder if had been something from the rehab or not. read more

We made a $1,000 deposit two years ago to reserve an apartment at Greenspring in Springfield. They promised a refund within 30 days of a written request if we changed our minds. We wound up getting into another retirement community in August. We sent a letter request for a refund of our deposit on 19 August 2020. Not getting a response we sent a follow up request on 19 October 2020. We know they at least got the first letter because they use our new address in continuing marketing materials. No refund yet. We will consider legal action. read more

My mother has lived at Greenspring for 12 years in an independent apartment. It used to be wonderful but not so much anymore. My 87-year-old mother remains in the facility because of her friendships and the social connections which earned the facility its second star. This review is based upon the recent reported news that there have been 4 deaths and at least 50 residents ill with a respiratory illness which has resulted in the intervention of the Fairfax County Health Department reported on many local news outlets. Today, my mother called us because she is feeling sick with respiratory symptoms. So we called the in-house health clinic anticipating that she would be seen due the reported epidemic. This was unfortunately not the case and my daughter had to take her to urgent care. Thank goodness we are local! The Food - It used to be fresh and dietary restrictions were listed right on the menu so it was easy for my mother to follow a gluten free diet as required by her celiac disease diagnosis. Now, not only are gluten free options not listed but neither are many other special diets. The food is more processed and sent in pre-packaged. I believe only sugar free food is notated. Now, she is expected to access an app on a smart phone according to the Director of Dining Services, Ty Wilson. My mother does not use a smart phone. Mr. Wilson explained that that there was not a dietician on staff who is qualified to accurately list the information and dining decisions are made at a cooperate office. These considerations are made at a corporate level not at the residence. Residents do not have the option to opt out of the food plan. Social Work - My mother has been urged to move to assisted living because she cannot access the gluten free menu and she has memory challenges. She does not want to leave her apartment and her cats. Fortunately, she has long term care insurance which enables her to afford to bring in help. Medical - My mother does not care for her physician. She is picky however the physician does not seem to have the skill set necessary to speak with elderly patients. Finally, the facility seems to benefit from the booming senior citizen population which has resulted in a decrease in quality. I fully anticipate being contacted to see if my mother would like to leave as a result of this post. She does NOT because she has autonomy and a bevy of friends. However, I believe that she might not be alive if we were not local and had the ability to check-in and help out. read more

Yes, their sales staff is very well trained - in deception. They will tell you how their nursing care is the best for your loved one, but in reality, their nursing care is the worst out there. They will sell you the moon and deliver you heartache as your loved one will not get better, but will get markedly worse due to neglect on a daily basis. I really wish Medicare and any other agency monitoring nursing care would visit this place unexpectedly. read more

My Mom unexpectedly required a short stay at a facility that offered rehabilitation while she waited for another surgery on her knee. She had been on the waiting list to move into the residential side of Greenspring. So, I thought why not test the waters with their rehabilitation services? Given the good reputation of Greenspring I was shocked and disappointed to what I found. I toured the facility, unannounced, and prior to allowing my Mom to be admitted there for rehab. The wing she would have been residing in reeked of fecal matter and urine. The room that they wanted to place my mom in stunk so bad I had to pull my shirt over my nose. I heard a woman repeatedly calling out for help from one of the rooms. The patients in the wing didn't look well cared for. The staff was openly fighting with each other at one end the hallway and did not care at all that we were all witnessing the dispute. The staff seemed very angry. Overall, I just had that gut feeling/instinct that there was a lot more disturbing things that I hadn't witnessed. I got bad, bad BAD vibes. I'm not allowing my parents to move to the residential area of Greenspring after seeing the rehabilitation area. What if they had a surgery while living there? They'd have to go to their rehab afterwards! I'm glad we showed up unannounced to see how this place is run when no one is watching. Double check it yourself before putting a loved one there. Something is amiss with the staff and with the cleanliness of the place. read more

The sales staff at Greenspring Village is very well trained at their sales pitch but nothing else. They make everything sound easy and smooth but they are EXTREMELY DECEPTIVE in their sales tactics. They make sure that they don't do anything illegal but they are HIGHLY UNETHICAL. Greenspring Village is a very nice place but be careful. Once they get you to sign, all of their assistance evaporates and you are on your own. Their recommended real estate agents, movers, etc., are VERY AGGRESSIVE and the associated fees are MORE THAN TWICE AS EXPENSIVE as anything you can get on your own. When you need their help they are unavailable. BEWARE!!! read more

My mother lives there now and is not happy. She moved in healthy but her health is deteriorating rapidly through no fault of her own. In general complaints from the residents are ignored. If a response is received it is surly at best. Some residents who dared to complain have been asked to leave. Construction has been ongoing throughout the campus, inside and out, since early this year with no regard for the residents. There is no building that is not affected. Hallway bathrooms, multi-use facilities and cafes have been closed for months with no end in sight. White dust covers all surfaces in hallways, including the hallways that connect all buildings, and seeps into apartments. Residents are suffering with allergies, head congestion, increased asthma attacks and some of these adverse conditions due to the unhealthy air have resulted in pneumonia and even death. There is no place on the campus that residents can go to get away from the construction or poor air. Their only options are to move to a hotel (paying for a hotel as well as the continued rent at Greenspring), move in with family or friends if that's even a possibility, or stay in their apartments until they collapse and are taken to the hospital. Due to the construction the HVAC air filters should be frequently changed but unfortunately they are scheduled for cleaning/replacement only twice a year. Is October the magic month? Filter changes might help, but at this point ALL of the duct work needs to be cleaned too. Perhaps a call to Fairfax County Health Department or the local news media (TV and newspaper) regarding these health conditions is in order. read more

When a person's parents die, this is the worst time in their life. If the people at Greenspring Village only knew that this senior living community has no intention of honoring their financial contracts, they would not feel any confidence in this company and they surely would not entrust them with their estates. The treatment we received from the Greenspring Finance Office and Garden Ridge in Springfield, Virginia was unconscionable. When we tried to get our escrow money back, we were shouted at, lied to, manipulated and diverted for two months after the 60 day period which was promised in the contract. It is very clear to us that Greenspring had every intention of holding on to our family's escrow money as long as they possibly could so that they could continue to invest it for their own financial gain. We had irrefutable documentation to prove our case but these people lied to us anyway and refused to return our calls. If they were willing to shout at me, a middle aged woman who is able to stand up for myself, how much worse would they treat a helpless elderly person who has just lost a spouse or a grieving daughter or son? We were shamefully treated and we had to bring in outside help and fight for our money. Nobody should have to go through that. It is a beautiful facility and the residents are fooled into feeling that their investment is safe there. Do not trust this place. read more
