One particular day, about a month ago, I stopped in to see if they carry Blanton's Bourbon. It's a single barrel product, hard to find and retails for about $60/bottle. I was VERY excited to see that they had a couple of bottles they had JUST received in. $100. My jaw hit the floor.. I guess they forgot about the "Discount" part of their name and took the supply and demand aspect of retail to heart. No need to ever shop there again as I know they're not against gouging their customers.

That these guys are now on InstaCart as the first business delivering alcoholic beverages in my…read morearea - even though I haven't ordered anything yet - is worthy of 4 stars. 'Cause look, when no other business that sells alcohol in your area is, to your knowledge, delivering, and you've tried two out-of-area alcohol delivery services that - regardless of how sincere their apologies are - leave you wanting to drink to numb the stress of the shopping experience they and/or those they partner with have provided, instead of drinking to imbibe (i.e., the only reason to drink, imo), you're gonna give a 4-star yelp to the first local liquor store to join InstaCart even though you haven't used them yet. The end. So after our delayed order stuck in Maspeth arrives via UPS, whenever that's gonna be, and the other half of what I should've received today finally gets to my door*, it's gonna be all about Johnson City Wine & Liquor. Okay? Thanks, Johnson City Wine & Liquor. You'll be hearing from us. Trust me. *So, after canceling my second order with MinibarDelivery.com, I placed one order with TapRm.com a couple of days ago that has somehow resulted in three unexpected deliveries with an apology for the missing case of beer that my online and print order said was delivered with this first shipment that arrived earlier today (So Tap Room's gonna need to stand in line for their yelp after I re-yelp MinibarDelivery.com over their indifference)

The day we turned the corner from Emma onto Main to discover the aftermath of the West Side Beer…read moreDepot fire could've been categorized as one of my life's defining moments. I felt confused, abandoned, and denied. I saw a celebratory summer filled with all the craft beer and cider my little heart desired (sometimes in slow-mo), and all within walking distance too. Instead it included a one-hour round trip bus ride - with a transfer and not including the return-trip wait time - or a one-hour round trip walk to the other Beer Depot, or tolerating, with a stiff upper lip, the beer selection at our local Price Chopper; and this lasted through early December. We'd been making regular trips to Lane's next door since the fire (Great place by the way! Their staff is professional, in the know about where things are in the store, and happy to point out a good deal whether you ask or not), So it goes without saying we were hopeful when we started seeing signs of reconstruction in the West Side Beer Depot's empty space. When we learned that they'd officially re-opened, I felt like someone had lifted me in the air and twirled me around. It's not an emporium, but the selection is varied enough to never bore you (like Ithaca Coffee Company's), and I'm not just talking about the different breweries and cideries you'll see on the shelves. This is the type of place that'll stock a wider range of products for a given company; so instead of having the choice of two or three products for X brewery/cidery, you'll see, like, four or five products from certain companies. They bring in seasonal and limited edition products too. And they're willing to make space on their shelves for new products like this in-state black current cider we stumbled upon last week. Last but not least, they small talk about their products in a genuine way as if they've tried them, which I appreciate. And they have mainstream beer and premade stuff in a can and all that...but most of them are stocked away from the real deal in another part of the store...where they belong. Appropriate. (They need a separate cash register over there. J/K!) So if you like learning about craft beer and cider, this is definitely an option. If I had a car I'd patronize this business just like the other customers I see pull up to give support to these guys. Thanks for staying in the game, West Side Beer Depot!
