The prices of the native plants were pretty shocking - I had made a point to come here specifically to get natives but ended up leaving empty-handed because the prices were extremely high. We went to this nursery last May and bought a bunch of outdoor shrubs/bushes: 6 rhododendrons & 2 roses - spent almost $700 in total! Unfortunately, ALL 6 rhodies died by mid-Fall, and one of the roses didn't make it through the winter. We went back to Urban Roots, bringing receipts + pictures of the dead plants, still in their mulched beds next to healthy others. It was then we first learned that Urban Roots does not guarantee any of their plants, even $69 Rhododendron! This is surprising since most or all nurseries I've been to provide at least 1 year's worth, it's notable that I've only used once in 50+ years! Anyway, selection was solid with all the expected types, and the initial experience was fine. Just beware "PRODUCTS ARE SOLD AS IS!"

The place smells wonderful as soon as you walk in thanks to a table of blooming spring flowers. I was especially impressed at the collection of seeds that included things I have not seen elsewhere (celeriac! red and purple carrots!). There is a large outdoor section too that opens up mid- to late April, depending on weather (not open yet for spring 2025 as of April 19th but will be soon). Outdoors they have trees, shrubs, perennials, bags of soil, and a nice selection of pots. During the winter they mostly have indoor plants and houseplants, so if you need your gardening fix when it's cold out, you can probably find what you're looking for here. The plants all look happy and well cared for. This community garden center is a co-op full of passionate people who truly care about the place and the plants, and it shows. You do not need to be a co-op member to shop there, but it supports the organization so if you end up becoming a regular it is well worth considering. The person I talked to here has worked there for 15+ years and was friendly and very knowledgeable. This is not like the high turnover big-box stores where the staff does not actually care about your garden success.

In a quandary, I wondered how many bags of department store bags I'd need. Hmmmm.... As we all know our phones listen to everything we talk about.. ahem.... I began to find local places and one of them was Lakeside Sod on Goodrich rd.- then I remembered that I had seen them at the Home and Garden show in Hamburg, NY... Well, that was the best decision I've ever made. The soil is quality. They make it themselves. There is no "junk" in the soil. It's fine, rich, almost euphoric. I ended up getting 3 yards to fill my garden . Wait until you see my garden! The following year I discovered they sell mini bags for a super inexpensive price ( less than $20 ) it's about knee high and manageable to handle. This year, I also discovered resealable mini bags of mulch from them. O M G !! I just love this place. I happen to run into the owner a few weeks ago and he thanked me for my business- that never happens in today's world. How great is that?!?!!! The office staff that cashed me out are very friendly. Lastly, I'd like to mention the two gentlemen that loaded my car ( several times ) out back . They both were the most helpful, friendly, ( and strong! ) guys ever. They were very attentive when I drove back there, I did not have to wait around. You can tell that they were "people persons" and grateful for the little bit of my business. That made me smile.
