You know its gonna be cool by the waft of mildew, fresh solder and dirt weed as soon as you open the door. Been going to Green Shift off and on since I was in grade school. Back in the day this was THE place in Seminole Heights to buy comix, horror movie zine back issues, dollar bin records and pawn shop guitars that were probably hocked by Nebraska Ave weirdos. (Either that or they fell off a truck in central Florida somewhere.) Always found some useful junk that was cool. Turntables, old practice amps, Mr T air fresheners, Dungeons n Dragons dice, Resident Evil shirts, whatever. My favorite was the back issues of Fangoria and assorted local fan zines-- this was the way to get into the underground stuff before the internet existed. They were always on sale and these salty old guys are always tryna wheel and deal so you walk out of the place with a box of crap and a smile. You know it, I know it-- places like Green Shift are a dying breed. Nebraska Ave can never be scrubbed or whitewashed, but gentrification and big biz will indeed slug the last nail in the pinebox for these mom and pop shops. Support it while you can. Even if that means stopping in and buying guitar strings or a comic book every once in a while. PS. NEVER try to buy a pair of Ernie Balls from these guys. I did and the owner gave me a lecture about how guitar strings are sold in SETS and not PAIRS! Classic comic book clerk stuff, more comical than offensive. See ya there. read more

I've been coming to Green Shift since the mid 1980's back when they were on Florida Avenue. You won't find a better selection of new and old comics, new and used guitars and many many other odds and ends. The prices are phenomenal and the staff over the years has always been exceptional, treating their customers like family. read more

No cranky old men here. They've always been more than helpful and very kind. Except for that one day where I skateboarded inside while using my cellphone drinking alcohol at the same time. It probably didn't help that I had my 7 year old niece rollerblade in right behind me without her parets and asked to use the bathroom. Seriously though, they've got great toys and collectibles at reasonable prices and tons of cheap back issues. Love this place. read more

Every time I travel, there are certain kinds of stores I like to visit, comic shops are one of them. This place was great! Not just were the prices were incredible, but Paul, who I believe was the owner, was very nice and accommodating; as soon as we walked in, he welcomed us and asked if we were looking for anything. I could also tell he had a lot of knowledge on comics and music, and knew what was in his store and where it could be found. I'm not sure if they have this special all the time, but in the very back, there's a room loaded with comics for $1. I really couldn't believe it. I asked Paul if these were really the prices, and he let me know that it was the real deal (literally). I began looking through that section of the store, and they had an awesome selection. Most comic stores will have a sale section like this, except they'll have crappy comics in this section that they need to get rid of. That being said, I grabbed over $30 worth of comics. This place sells an eclectic group of things: comics, cards, a few collectible toys, t-shirts, guitars, records, cd, dvds, antique tv's and radios....an other stuff. It's kind of in a sketchy part of town, and the building looks rather abandoned from the outside, but the guy at the desk was helpful, they had all of the comics you could want: new, old in a hundred longboxes, and even really old ones up on the wall. Was on one of those wild goose chases to all the comic stores in town with a friend of mine, looking for something but not sure exactly what. After hitting up a few places in town, the last stop of the day was at Green Shift. I was set up for disappointment when I walked in, thinking it was a music store that might have a few odd comic and pop culture things. I was wrong. A few other reviews mentioned a good selection of back issues. I completely agree. The books were well organized and it was easy to find a few titles that popped in to my head while I was in the store. There was some pop culture stuff there that wasn't at other stores around (picked up a few things to celebrate Doctor Who's 50th). The staff was helpful and friendly. I would definitely stop in again when in Tampa. read more

I've been going to Green Shift for many years. They have a wide selection of both independent as well as main stream comics, musical instruments and accessories such as guitar pedals and strings. Reasonable prices and the service has been notably friendlier in the last year or so (wasn't so much in the past so that's a great improvement!). They recently moved in to their new location which is smaller and I did notice less instruments and amps but it's still a great little place worth checking out. read more

Weird comic shop / guitar store. They had a big back issue comic selection and what seemed like a good selection of music equipment. I found one of my most sought after comics there for really cheap. The downside was, the guys who run / own this place are cranky old bastards. I should have taken a picture of the front of the store, which was covered in No signs. No Smoking, No Public Bathrooms, No kids under 18 without parents. No Cell Phones. No Eating. No Drinks. No Rollerblades. No Skateboards. Im not exaggerating when I say that there had to be 50+ different signs. read more

One of the owners is a certifiable grump, but I guess he's entitled to that. The other guy is nice as can be so it evens out. Been going here off and on for, I don't know... 17 years? I've bought used music equipment, random doodads and comics. Which is pretty much the scope of their offerings. A real gem of Tampa with an owner who seems grumpy but is really quite nice. Very dusty. A little musty. Full of character. Wait, is it a big mobile home? Kinda. Has looked exactly the same for two decades. Don't bring a purse unless you plan to stick it in a locker. Green Shift once served as my go to guitar string center, when I lived in Seminole Heights. More recently it's become my back-up comic book store. Back issues are above cover price so tend to look for new issues or back issues that I can find nowhere else. Trades are 20% off cover price tho, so that's very sweet. Final thoughts: If you are scared to walk in, don't be. read more

You won't find another shop in this area quite like it. No other shop I know of mixes comics with music gear. Definitely worth a trip to check out. I'm a HUGE Star Wars geek who also happens to love 70s music and Doctor Who, so I decided to stop by Green Shift today. The store is fairly good sized. As you walk in, to your left is the instrument and record section. They have a variety of cool old records, music instruments, and song books. In front of you is a display of various DVDs, some comics, and a lot of things like amps, microphones, etc. Past that is the the new comics section. If you walk into the new comics section, you'll see a room to the left. That is the collectibles room, with s bunch of figures, toys, and books. The back room is the comics back issue room. They have just about every comic you can imagine. I could spend hours browsing here! They also have fairly reasonable prices, and most of the comics were in mint or at least very good condition. Green Shift is a great place to check out if you are in the Tampa area. I knocked off one store because the staff member there didn't even acknowledge me and until I was ready to check out, which was 30 minutes after I walked in. Otherwise, it's a wonderful shop and I plan to come back. If you are wondering: I bought a Marvel Star Wars comic book. PS: I know this isn't the store owner's fault, but as a Tampa resident I must warn you all that the surrounding area is a very high crime neighborhood. This place was a hidden treasure. Kind of a weird mix store, comics/guitars. I read the reviews about the signs on the door but if anyone knows Nebraska Ave. you'll understand.
