He previously swapped out a bridge on a student instrument for me and checked over a 5-string pochette violin to inspect a potential rib crack and assess the setup. The serial number places it from the Yamaha factory in Japan in the early 70s. They said that it would be inspected and I would get a phone call about an estimate. They did not review the horn with me. It should have been my first red flag. A few days later I get a call informing me that 'the instrument needs a complete overhaul and that when they put a light in it it was just full of leaks everywhere and would cost $1500 in labor and $200 in parts and that it wasn't worth it because of the value of the instrument' in an arrogant judgmental tone. When I picked up the horn, I was again told about leaks. This told me everything I needed to know because I too have put a light down my instrument to find the leaks and know exactly where a 1972 vintage alto that's never had it's pad replaced is leaking. And it wasn't were he was pointing to. I don't know who hurt you or which horn you're confusing mine with but I felt like I was being lied to. If you didn't want to do the work, simply let me know. Telling me my instrument isn't worth fixing is unacceptable. I determine the value of my horn, not you. And being rude about it is even more unacceptable. I guess with the closing of AG Music in Oakland and abundant USD student rentals, there's no space for the community musician in their shop. Be warned when you cross their handyman-grade aluminum threshold.

Bravo Maestro! It…read moreis a pleasure to sing the praises of Shaun. He has worked with my 11 year old child for about 6 months now and I am so impressed with with his expertise and patience. We originally started taking lessons with him to prep for a show with a school friend's band but even after the event passed my son wanted to continue. Shaun really has a gift of making music understandable, incorporating the building of technique, laying down the fundamentals, and all while having fun. He really makes an effort to find the approach that will make things work for his student. The cost is reasonable for private lessons and he has all the equipment at his studio so we just show up with sticks. Highly recommended.

The owners seem to care about fulfilling there teacher's schedule more than the students individual growth. As there are big gaps between teachers quality as well. Some are ok some are horrible. It depends on your luck. Of course they would tell you these teacher is specially selected for you base on your kid's whatever but in reality. The owners seem is the best teacher but they pick their student very selectively. Only the best will get into their schedule. Other's they don't care. I would never send my kid to music schools like that again. Will always get the individual teacher in the future. Amanda, My son got pass the ABRSM with distinction is mostly because of his hard-work. I want to add that your school and the teacher didn't informed us there will be a fourth song that needed to play during exam until a week before the actual exam. That being said. This shows how inexperience the teacher is and your school didn't bother to let us know as we have plan this months prior. My son only had a week to practice a bring new song before the exam and that really stress out the entire family and fortunately our son pulled it off. Again. All you care is fulfilling your teacher's schedule over the independent students growth as you have many students with many teachers who sometimes comes and go fairly quickly. I am not saying you don't care about your students but we feel we didn't get enough attention as we feel independent teacher would be a much better choice for parents who wants more growth for their kids in time.

I actually had a 1 star experience, walking out thinking, "This store is failing, is going to die,…read moreand I know why," but I am giving 3 stars because I want little brick and mortar music stores to survive, especially in places where they are automatically going to have a hard time doing so. I walked in with cash in my pocket, hoping to be surprised and be forced to buy a guitar I didn't expect to run into, as I do whenever I'm in a new or unfamiliar place against my will, as on this day. As I walked in the door, which I was glad to find open during business hours (often these days, doors aren't, especially with guitar and music stores), and was one of 3 customers in the store, the other two already inside, far from the solitary visible employee, who never looked up from the computer or spoke to me until I asked him two guitars on the third row of wall guitars up, that I didn't know by sight, to ask what they were. Instead of answering, he asked me if I was going to buy anything. How do I know if I'm going to buy anything, when I'm asking you what I'm looking at, when you ask me that? I'm going to say this was a "socially awkward person" issue, but that's not going to make me ever come back to this store. Someone at this store does not understand that once you alienate a customer who is apt to return if they feel good about you, you're never going to see that person again. But I hope you all survive. You are going to have to change the way you view and treat people walking in off the street to do that, otherwise why are you paying overhead to have a brick and mortar store just to make people feel unwelcome and suspect, when they walk in. I thought, walking out, this place is doomed, and maybe that's for the best, because the model of personal conduct shouldn't survive. I felt disliked, and unwelcome for no reason, other than that I must be stupid for walking through the door. It seems impossible this is not a common experience. "Are you going to buy something?" What kind of person responds with that when a customer asks what a retail item is (because they are trying to find out whether it's something they would want to buy).

Blake is kind, encouraging, and relaxed - which is such a great environment for a kid (or anyone) to learn in. He's also passionate and enthusiastic about the drums, which is contagious. A surfing instructor in Hawaii once said to me that surfing is reconnecting with your inner child…read moreand just telling them to not worry about making mistakes and just play. My drum lessons with Blake the last couple years have embodied that same sentiment, and his supportive, encouraging teaching style make it easy to get out of my head and just have fun. Even when my limbs are flailing wildly about and offbeat for measures, I don't fall apart in embarrassment because Blake has the ability to help figure out what would be helpful and reflect that in a comprehensible (and simultaneously uplifting) manner. With regards to location, the studio is very accessible by MUNI (located adjacent to the Balboa Park BART station) and has a parking lot as well - very convenient! While I'm sure Blake can legit teach fundamentals and technical playing for beginners, I have mainly brought in songs from various genres, decades, and artists, and he would break them down and convert them into sheet music. It's very impressive how skilled he is at dissecting a song (within minutes of listening to it) into its snare, hi-hat, and kick beats. I've even asked Blake to play the song to demonstrate how the beat goes; not only would this be helpful, but I've found myself both inspired and mesmerized when he plays. So whether you're a total beginner or an expert, I 100% recommend Blake because he is, as the kids say -- straight fax, no printer: an amazing instructor and all-around cool guy!
