Lemon curd + Greek yogurt = OMG

I've always known about my glutton tendencies. Especially if the food is organic. So I am not surprised that whenever I am in Green Pastures, I always have a strong urge to order the whole menu. I'm not kidding. I want to order every single thing. Every page, front and back. Good thing my family is always there to intervene: hoy, Rio, you are over-ordering again. GUH. So I am forced to just order my favorites: a large bowl of Terra Natura with extra goat cheese (the beeeeest!), Veggie Burger (the beeeeest!), Cheesy Kale (the beeeeest!) and Yang Chow Cauiflower Rice (tastes like rice but isn't so the beeeeest!). Every single thing is such a winner that even when I'm feeling full already, I still need a few more bites of whatever is in front of me. And even when I'm feeling Sooo super duper grumpily full already, i stiiiiiill need a few more. Just one more, please. I know, I know. What a glutton! You will be too when you finally try this place out.

Have you ever had a good veggie burger? I have. It was here in Green Pastures. I got attracted to the dish because the menu glaringly boasts about it. "A VEGGIE BURGER THAT DOESN'T SUCK!!" Curiosity piqued, I ordered one. "Kuya, isang veggie burger that doesn't suck please." And what do you know? It really didn't! I don't know how the hell they did it, but this burger seemed like I was actually eating real beef. There's something about the mixture of the patty coupled with the melted cheese and the dash of pickles that really gives you the illusion of a bonafide cow sandwich. Green Pastures has the knack for making these sorts of illusions, from their yang chow fried cauliflower (a must try) to their Korean fried cauliflower. The coffee is delicious too and comes from a selection of local organic farms from the provinces. Farm-to-table cuisine hasn't been this good in Manila until now.

Don't panic, it's organic! Good food, big servings, all made fresh and with healthy and organic ingredients. My first thought though upon looking at the menu is that they offer too much. No pictures, just text, text, text describing what each dish is. It's kind of overwhelming. But with the right amount of patience, you'll find and experience the most appetizing meals. Must-tries are definitely the Organic Mushrooms Toast, the Duck You! fries, and the Porchetta. Yes, make sure you're prepared to spend a lot.

Green Pastures started the whole don't panic it's organic obsession a few years back. There was a time when I tried to dine there and I was 42nd on the waiting list. 42nd! That's insane. The duck fries, charmingly called Duck you!, is a mainstay for me. It's just fries deep-fried in duck fat and served with some duck meat. What the duck? I also recommend the Ricotta cheese with some bread and garlic. The serving of cheese us pretty generous and I absolutely love the roasted garlic on the side. The appetizers surely impressed, the main courses still has a lot of room to grow in my opinion. The sea urchin pasta fell flat while the bahn mi (Vietnamese style sandwich with liver spread) was rather plain. The Tequila Joes salpicao was very flavorful but the the price point didn't match the level of satisfaction. It's still a good place to try. I'll try the burgers next time maybe those would fare a bit better.

I blame myself, and partly the hype, for being somewhat disappointed with Green Pastures. I have heard nothing but amazing reviews praising the cuisine of Green Pastures, so I don't understand what happened. I was with my mother and father when together, we ordered the June salad (endless summer salad) for P595, the organic mushroom toast for P300 (sous vide egg, house made ricotta, and cacciocavallo cheese), and the roast organic chicken for P650. And since it was my mother's birthday, the waiters gave us free dessert: salted caramel ice cream with popcorn crunch. But even if the salad and the toast were delicious, we felt like there was something missing. Needless to say, the atmosphere after our lunch was awkward because our bill reached over. One of those moments when no one wants to talk about the meal they just had because they ended up paying for more than expected, and the food turned out to be not as memorable as they had hoped it would be. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. I want to come back to Green Pastures to give it another chance and order a different item on the menu, so hopefully, I can be proven wrong.

I first heard about Green Pastures from my cousin who was talking about the place with her mom and all I heard was "duck fat fried fries" and that just did it for me. I knew I had to go to that restaurant. A few months had passed and I couldn't find the right time to go to Shangri-la Mall since I don't usually go to that area during mall hours. Finally, one day (which was today), a meeting was scheduled in Shangri-la and I knew it was going to end right before rush hour. So to pass the time, I headed to Green Pastures for a late snack slash early dinner and guess what I ordered! DUCK YOU! Yes, that's what they call the fries. And it's even better than I imagined it to be. I honestly thought that it would just be one of those fries cooked in duck fat, but no! It was served with some duck confit, Parmesan cheese and the best part... DUCK SKIN CHICHARON. Yup, you read that right! Aside from that, I ordered the Green Pastures Carbonara. The serving is just right for a person with my stomach: not too much and not too little. I will definitely, definitely go back for those fries though.

Organic food restaurant, and average taste but price range seems slightly higher than similar dishes serving in any other restaurant. It would be good for people of health consciousness.

The food is so tasty. I highly recommend the barbecue! The combo includes two ulams, noodles, rice, and iced tea. I was really full but I finished it all. I'm so grateful the man that worked there told me that two of the ulams I was going to pick were based off the same sauce so I did not end up with the same tasting food. Even my meat eating sister loved the food here! How can you have Beef and Broccoli without beef? Is there even a type of Barbecue that's not made out of meat? Well, Bodhi uses tofu as a meat substitute. Their food tastes so good, you can't even tell that everything is made out of tofu. It's way healthier and cheaper. I usually have issues concerning my weight. I just can't imagine myself looking fat. Whenever I feel like I am gaining a few pounds, I just stop eating at fast food restaurants and I go to healthier options like Bodhi. I'd say get their quekiam (one of their specialties)--this erm..thing (I don't know, gluten or soy based mock meat?) is stuffed with savory veggies and mushrooms and comes with a spicy red sauce on the side. It's definitely not like the street kikiam which is made of god knows what! Super tasty appetizer... I was excited to try their veg sisig as it was one of their specialties, but I was a bit disappointed as the serving was quite small (at Php 170...) and while it was seasoned well and had a variety of mushrooms and minced tofu/soy/gluten (unsure...), I guess it lacked that creamy sauce that I loved when I used to eat the real pork sisig. It could use some veg mayo or some sauce to elevate it to a really satisfying sisig recreation. However, I should mention that it did come with crumbled chicharon (made of tofu skins) on top! I don't care to join either side of this debate. What i do is eat vegetarian dishes whenever possible, but still go for red meat and fowl on a regular basis. Whenever I am out on the field for work, I usually end up heading for the nearest SM food court to eat, and I'm glad that a lot of them have a branch of Bodhi Vegetarian Healthfood. The taste of their various vegemeat dishes comes close enough to the real thing. One of my favorites is their version of sweet and sour pork, as well as their pork barbecue on a stick. Biting into either dish tells you that it can't possibly be real pork. This is where the tofu-based dishes is a dead giveaway that it's not the real thing. But then, you would know because this is a vegan place, remember? Bodhi has set meals for less than P100 and they even come with a teeny weenie cup of iced tea or soda as well as a complimentary mini cup of soup. I even made a reservation last night to make sure that we could have a table for 10 at 1230. Upon arriving, a girl that looked like she was running the place was giving our reserved table away but quickly moved the other party to a different table. We ordered our food and in a few minutes one set of the Spring Rolls came out (we ordered two.) It took awhile before the second set came out. For soup, my grandfather ordered 1 roasted tomato soup, while my brother and my uncle ordered a mushroom soup each. For some reason, they kept giving us an extra mushroom soup which we kept sending back to the kitchen. When my grandfather's spaghetti bolognese came, we were all expecting that all our other orders would come. But after about 30 mins of waiting, we had followed up on the order and they just kept saying that it's coming. After a good hour and a half of being in the restaurant, and a few orders cancelled, my family decided to ask for the bill and just cancel everything. The staff continuously made excuses and said the food was coming. They even mentioned that they will have to pay for that themselves, but with service like that, my family just wanted to go eat elsewhere. While waiting for the bill, they asked us what orders came out! Shouldn't they know what orders they had already served us? When the bill finally arrived, the orders were wrong and they kept insisting that we ordered three mushroom soups. We kept giving it back, adding and removing some orders. The cashier edited the receipt at least SIX TIMES! To top it all off, the lady who looked like she was in charge of the place, didn't even bother to come to our table to apologize or anything. She just hid behind the counter, looking at her phone. When I thought she was finally going to talk to our table, she instead went to two other tables and talked to those groups. Another group that heard our complaining even said, "Really bad service." It's disappointing because I enjoyed what food I was able to taste, I was excited for the carbonara that never arrived, and this place has been getting very good reviews. I'm still deciding on whether or not I want to go back to try that carbonara, but as of now, I'm very disappointed at this place's service. See, I don't think a lot of people (myself included) know how to season vegetables well, or at least not right away, not with a lot of practice and research. This creates a misleading mindset for everyone else that veggies are bland and are "rabbit food", "cardboard", and even more depressing, a mere side dish to your meat. What I love about Edgy Veggy is how well-seasoned their food is. Even the rice included in their rice meals aren't simple, but flavored with spices and herbs and it really elevates your vegetable munching experience. I've tried a lot of veggie burgers, but so far, Edgy Veggy's mushroom burger patties are the most flavorful ones I've had in a long while. The texture's excellent, not mushy or too enveloped in breading unlike some veg burger patties, and the shiitake mushroom flavor is quite distinct, which I love. The Mushroom Panino is also quite good. However, I'm not a big fan of their Mushroom Longganisa much, as the rough/sandy texture doesn't sit too well with me, and the rice is quite too punch-y and overwhelming for my taste. If you're with friends, I really recommend you get the soy chai milk tea pot! Great to share and the chai flavor is so calming. In a perfect world, one where I actually have a lot of money, I would eat here every day. But, back to reality--this place is a bit overpriced.
