I highly recommend Green City Gardens for yard work. We hired them to reseed the grass in our front yard, and they did an excellent job. They rototilled the yard and raked and removed the old grass by hand. then they leveled the soil, carefully planted the new seed, and spread mulch on top of it all. They were pleasant to have around and worked hard to make it a successful installation. When we needed a little more seed, they deliveder it and did not charge us for the extra. I would use them any time I had yard work to be done. read more

I hired JD and Green City Gardens to re-landscape the front of my house and the berm between our lot and neighbors and to plant three large evergreens to provide privacy at the end of the patio. A year later, two of the 7' evergreens are dead and 1/3 of the other plants are dead. Have reached out to JD via phone call/VM and text SEVEN times and he will not respond. VERY unprofessional and he has not honored the warranty he promised. Save your money and your energy and find someone else.... read more

We hired J.D., owner of Green City Gardens, to design & install a large landscaping project at our home. We couldn't have been more satisfied with how it turned out - here's why: 1) Expertise: J.D. used his deep knowledge of botany to recommend an ecosystem of plants that were not only stunning to look at, but that fit together in their respective planting beds in size, shape, color & texture, and bloomed at different times to ensure we had spectacular color from spring to fall. 2) Efficient: Installation of the plants was seamless. His crew was professional and competent. 3) Responsive: A few of the plants needed replacing after the frigid temps & harsh winter of 2024. J.D. immediately replaced them with no questions asked. The most important question one should ask themselves about their experience with any contractor they've done business with is - would you hire them again? Answer: we wouldn't hire anyone else but J.D. for our landscaping needs, especially knowing how important beautiful landscaping can be to maximizing the value of our home. read more

We just had a complete renovation of our old shrubs, bushes and various icky plants that surround our property. Green City Gardens provided a wonderful proposal and then totally delivered what we anticipated and MORE! They removed all the old, amended the soil and planted hardy, lovely and larger than expected trees, bushes and really interesting plants. The end result is extremely pleasing and exciting to see! We highly recommend Green City Gardens - owner J.D. is fabulous, knowledgeable and really hard working! read more

We worked with JD from Green City Gardens to design and plant new landscaping in the front of our house. This included removing the existing shrubs, adding organic materials and planting the new flowers and bushes. In addition, JD, Doug, Carl and John removed two existing trees which had died and replaced them with new trees. The project was projected to be completed in about 2.5 days and the team achieved the target. The entire crew was excellent to work with--each provided their input and recommendations regarding plant placement. Communication was excellent throughout the entire process--from initial design through planting. JD's design was excellent and the new landscaping greatly enhanced the front of our house. Doug, John, JD and Carl worked diligently to remove the existing landscaping, planting and mulching the new plants. Based on our experience, we highly recommend Green City Gardens---they were reasonably priced and easy to work with when making significant enhancements to our landscaping. read more

I really wanted to like Green City Gardens but what a disappointing experience. I met with JD to discuss a patio project, adjusting my calendar to free up time from work so we could meet and talk through ideas. We had a good conversation for about an hour to discuss design options, at the end of which JD said he'd have a proposal to me in a week or so. In the following days I was really looking forward to receiving the proposal and getting going with the work. But JD never sent the proposal, so I reached out. He let me know he needed until the following week, so I said fine. We all get busy, so a week is no big deal. But that week also came and went without a message from JD. So I reached out again to see if there was any additional info I could provide to help the process along. No response. A few days later I tried again. No response. I tried one more time. Nothing. Really frustrating to realize I wasted my time with him. I would have significant doubts about working with him given his poor communications and lack of responsiveness. JD, if you're going to come out and take up someone's time and get their hopes up, the least you can do is return phone calls or Yelp messages. Not only is it the professional thing to do, it's just common courtesy. I understand if you're busy and need more time. But I don't understand the complete lack of communication. No excuse for that. read more

After a couple of phone tag misfires, made an appointment with JD to evaluate my home landscape. 15 minutes after the scheduled appointment, JD called to say he forgot. He promised to text me alternative times for the upcoming week. Crickets I understand that good contractors are busy people but please don't over promise and under deliver. Just say your booked solid and not accepting new customers. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience with JD. He was prompt, professional, patient, and helpful. We just moved from the city to a new home with mature landscaping and have no idea how to take care of our lawn. He walked me through the yard and identified every obscure plant and exactly how to take care of it in straightforward, beginner's terms. We will absolutely work with Green City Gardens going forward and would recommend him to anyone. read more

Loved working with J. D., and was most impressed with his formal presentation of the many shrubs and trees available to me. The job went smoothly, and when I decided to add 2 more evergreens to the project, JD made it happen that same day. I will definitely use him again in the future. Barb F. Northbrook read more

Just worked with Green City Gardens for another landscape project and are so happy with the results. JD is extremely knowledgable about trees, native plants, you name it. He really listens to what you want and has excellent design instincts to enhance your vision. Great sketches, good communication and his crews could not be nicer. He always tells us exactly how to care for the new plantings and our gardens are thriving. We've worked with him three times over the past 8 years and highly recommend him. read more

I needed a last minute snow removal because I was out of town. I was contacted within 15 minutes, and received a quote in under 30 minutes. The service was excellent and they even sent me a picture after the work was completed. I would use them again. read more

From start to finish, the owner , JD, was a pleasure to deal with. He spent time with us explaining what flowers and shrubbery would look best in the area designated. With then help of his laptop computer, he scrolled through dozens of different choices for the plantings. After he spent about 1.5 hours with us, he got an idea of our budget, and indicated he would get back to us when he could put together a schematic and cost analysis. He got back to us in a few days. Arriving at 8:00 a.m., JD and his workers started working the soil and planting the selected plants and flowers. They worked until 2:00 p.m. They finished the job with laying down a beautiful layer of a dark colored mulch. They cleaned up thoroughly afterward. JD also gave us a guide to help us in our watering technique. I was very pleased with the entire process. From the first phone call to the end of their work, JD and his team were nothing other than complete professionals. The young men who worked with him were courteous and pleasant. Additionally, they have been responsive to my plant and gardening questions months after the job was completed. read more

JD and Green City Gardens was professional and amazing! JD responded to me within hours and we set up an appointment for a couple of days later. I texted him some inspiration pictures I advance, when he got to my home we discussed the landscaping for a few minutes and it was as if he read my mind! He went back to his car and texted me a "rough" drawing of my project and it was spot on. A couple of days later he emailed me a CAD drawing of my project in color with all of the flowers and plants labeled! He was flexible and able to work with our budget. About a week later my project was installed. He even sent me watering instructions! My neighbors have already knocked on my door to compliment the new landscape design. I would recommend JD and Green City Gardens to everyone!! read more

We first worked with JD during the winter for snow removal. He was prompt, responsive, and thorough in all of our experience working with him. In the spring, JD and his team solved a major draiangae problem in our new homes' front and back yards. JD also beautifully designed new landscaping for both the front and back of our home, while even building a dog run for the pup! Once again, he was promot and responsive to all questions. We highly recommend JD and Green City Gardens! read more

I love JD. He is very prompt with home visit, proposal etc. He has great ideas and really knows his plants. Not the same old boring stuff. He understands shade and deer, my two biggest problems. JD's creativity is unparalleled. I really enjoyed the process of creating a front yard landscaping plan with him--he's a dynamo of ideas and has a seemingly limitless knowledge base of what plants might work, taking into account family allergies, preferences, amount of sunlight, drainage. It's been a couple months now, and I think this has been a great investment! read more

JD just redid our front landscaping and a portion of our backyard, and everything turned out really well! His design was very thought out, in terms of when the various plants bloom, the colors, etc. He's amazing at sketching out his ideas right there in front of you, and open to collaboration and changes to fit your needs. I thought his pricing was very reasonable and was able to make slight variations during the design process to fit within our budget, which I very much appreciated. His crew was also very nice, and overall was a great experience. I would recommend them to anyone if you're in need of landscaping services. Thank you again, JD!! read more

We contacted GCG after finding it online and reading the Yelp reviews. Ours was a complicated project. Ended up removing dead trees, relocating some existing plants and adding 60+ new trees, bushes, flowers and grasses to a property that feature lots of mature landscaping. JD is the best...after being contacted we had several long meetings listening to what we thought/needed, then a powerpoint plan of each of the items he was recommending and where he thought it should go. Then he was here with his team overseeing the installations (with a shovel and hose, not just supervising). He is a delight to deal with...amazingly knowledgable, detail oriented, and a very nice, fun, interesting guy (his team was also great). If you don't take a look at JD and GCG you're making a mistake. Also, importantly, the various items he installed were beautiful, good size and healthy. read more

Wow! The owner JD is extremely courteous, professional, and responsive. I worked with him to arrange snow plowing services for my parents because I live out of town. He took care of them and their driveway promptly, answered all my questions, and would personally check on their property any time there was a concern. What a relief to know I don't have to worry about their driveway during the snowy Chicago winters. read more

We loved working with JD and the Green City Gardens team. JD took a design that we had previously made and was able to add his own touches and insights. He was knowledgeable on how to best use the space and what plants and trees would work well. He also did an amazing job adding bluestone pavers to make a path from our driveway to the side yard. The transformation of our front yard is amazing. JD's professionalism and passion made him a wonderful choice for us. We highly recommend using Green City Gardens. read more
