The City of Lisbon offers a wealth of restaurants offering vegetarian and/or vegan options; and, on top of that, there's no dearth of eateries offering strictly vegan/plant-based menus. During our 6-week stay in Lisbon, we've been trying to hit as many of the top-rated ones as possible. That said, we keep coming back to Green Beans Café & Mercearia, which has turned into our go-to for awesomely satisfying meals, scrumptious savory and sweet take-away pies and desserts, kitchen home-cooking items, and vegan wines. This two-part storefront (run by the husband and wife team of Mario and Alexandra--with Mario strictly holding the chef-side of the business) offers fair trade, eco- and animal-friendly clothing, personal toiletries, and household goods on one side (Sapato Verde), and a 100% vegan menu and mini-"market" on the other (Green Beans).
Green Beans' menu offers pizzas (7 varieties from $7-$9), toasts (5 kinds from $5-$6.50), sandwiches (5 of 'em from $6-$6.50), a gamut of 7 snacks and soup of the day (from $1-$6.20), and a good amount of desserts (anywhere from $1.20-$2). Naturally, being a café rather than a full-blown restaurant, and depending on supply and demand--and its popularity is ever-growing!--menu items can, at times, run out. That said, EVERYTHING on the menu is YUM, so there's always something to choose and you'll never leave hungry! (And we've been here enough times to have ordered in and take-away a good number of what's on the menu!) And, too, you find me a place that offers better prices, and I'll eat my ... vegan sapatos!!! ;) While there's only a couple of non-alcoholic beer choices, there's a good number of mineral waters and natural soft-drink beverages, as well as vegan vinho. YAY!!! :D
In sum: As the sign on the wall says, "Cooking for others is a way of showing love," and Mario shows it in every dish he offers...!!! Just GO to Green Beans and prove me wrong...!!! Muito obrigado, Mario and Alexandra...!!! :D read more
