    Portobello panini (mmm)
    Diana S.

This has been one of the best discoveries for breakfast/brunch. They are located in the basement of a church. The coaches are cozy, wide, perfect for spending time with friends or by yourself (free wifi). The guys at the counter were friendly, fast, and accurate. If you ask for coffee they'll give you a cup to pour it yourself in the machine. We ordered a tropical smoothie that was fantastic, it helped us to relieve the heat damage with healthy fruits. The portobello panini was delicious. It was perfectly grilled, with melted cheese, red pepper, and chubby slices of juicy portobello (100% recomendable). I couldn't finish it all while warm, once at home I got munchies, even cold it tasted awesome!!! I checked-in there, found a cookie for treat. The cookie was exquisite as well.

    Mmm.. chai tea latte.

As a coffee house, I'd rate this a 4. As a spot to grab some grub? A 3. Staff has always been super friendly and helpful, and they make a great chai tea latte. All but one food item I have tried has been incredibly bland, and portions are on the small side. The one item that I would order again? The morning glory wrap - a tasty tortilla filled with peanut butter, yogurt, granola and bananas. Based on the description, I did not think it would be that great, but its quite good. The space is cool. They've got free wifi (code is at the register on slips of paper) and have open mic Thursday evenings. Green Bean Cafe is close to campus, and offers up some good drinks, so I'll be back.

Location is not noticeable. Coffee is just a 3-star. And relatively expensive as a cafe.

They thrive in coffee and pastries but they do have a really good egg sandwich as well. They are super nice and friendly and will walk your food to your table. It's not a large shop so it may be crowded depending on what time you go. There is a countertop that seats 4, a long table ther seats about 10, and a few 2 top tables. If you have a large group this may not be for you. Alba egg sandie - this was an excellent sandwich. I wish it had sausage or bacon on it but regardless it's great. It's light and fluffy as well as airy and savory. It comes with the aioli/chive and this is what sets it off. But the egg is thick and the perfect size to boot.

Super hot so it took a bit to cool, but then a strong roast. While the laws of thermodynamics were underway, I was able to watch the flow of customers, observe the "Javabot" that sadly no one used this morning and watch the Detroit traffic circling around Campus Martius. Other than I was not able to get their wifi to work (Detroit has a free wifi as well), it was a good resting spot with quiet background music and it never did get any other sit down customers while I dawdled. Located in a cool, older building in historic downtown Detroit. The location is great, near the town square, Campus Martius. Comfy seating options available but it feels like more of a carry out place. It felt like a narrow space to me because there is a large coffee display in the middle. It looks really cool but makes the space feel smaller to me. I'll definitely stop by and get more coffees to go.

When I opened the bag I could tell right away it was too fine. I attempted to pull a shot, but got nothing. It was most definitely Turkish grind. Since I could do nothing with the bag, I went back to explain this was ground too fine. The same individual was there and reacted with condensation, saying this is indeed espresso grind, which is basically Turkish, and he doesn't know what kind of maker I have so he cannot dial it in. I said I have never had this problem in the years I have done this at other shops. He acted like he could do nothing for me, so when I pressed that I can do nothing with these beans I spent money on, he got on the phone. At one point I heard him say, "Yes, I tried to explain that to her." As if I didn't know what I was talking about. I was finally given the option to get a bag of beans without having them ground, which is all I really wanted. I can grind the beans in my own grinder at home. I went down the street and bought a bag of beans there. I asked for espresso grind and mentioned that the last place gave me Turkish. She had to look up the appropriate setting, but she got it perfect. When I got home and opened the bag of beans from Black Iron, the beans were oily and smelled burnt. My coffee tasted that way, too. I was rather shocked because the latter I had ordered with my purchase was not bad. I had to use them up slowly by masking the bad taste with my go-to beans.

There were 3 baristas working and although they seemed to know what they were doing, it still seemed like they were a little confused. They don't ask for your name so if you walk away, they just say the drink order - no outside voices so you may not hear it. Pretty good seating options with outside and inside tables. Seemed like they had a group of regulars sitting at a table behind the counter - one of the guys has a VERY loud laugh and he seemed to be having a grand time based on the amount of times he shared it with the whole shop. The crumble had a good flavor but it was pretty dry. Chai latte was okay but was pretty mid temp by the time I got it. Service wasn't bad and they were able to make me a pour over iced decaf which was great - a lot of places don't do that. All in all a decent stopover.
