Gord will always share knowledge of the lake and what is biting where and on what bait so fisherman have the best chance of success. Cabins are great and have ask the amenities one could want for a week long getaway. Kitchens with full size fridge, microwave, gas range, and all plates and utensils. Bedrooms and beds are comfortable having 2 single beds in each. Nice boat docks in a shelter cove with power available to charge the batteries in the boat. Fish house near the docks to watch Gord filet the fish like a master. Been coming to VBL for years with my brothers and now bringing my son. This is a place to make special memories.

I have never had a bad experience at this resort and have had many a tight lines while fishing walleye, pike, musky, lake trout, whitefish and the mighty perch. I also enjoy having the opportunity to fish many of the portage lakes that are available to VBL guests.

The guide staff share their knowledge of the lake and the best techniques to catch fish in a friendly manner. We caught Smallmouth,Walleyes, Northerns till our arms fell off. The boats are well equipped and offer a comfortable ride. All the staff at the lodge make you feel welcome and like family. The dock crew to the housekeeping and dinning room staff-all were very friendly. The accommodations are very comfortable and clean. I could not leave this review without mentioning the Food. WOW.....You never walked away from a meal hungry. Can't wait to return next year.

I don't believe it was the cooks fault. You have to have the ingredients. I found out the last day, that if you ordered scrambled eggs they came out of a plastic jug. Not a cracked egg. They wasted a lot of food. I could save them a lot of money. Everyone's juice glass is already filled when you come to the table??? Most gets thrown out. Put the containers of juice in a tray of ice, and let people poor their own of what they want. No waste. Prefilled plates of the main course and the fixings. Some of it most people didn't or couldn't eat for various reasons. Again, a waste. It goes on. Over all, nothing special. Fishing is good and fun. Nice boats and equipment, and a couple of the dock boys were very helpful. Most of the people were tipping as they go. Then at the end, they give you three envelopes for you tips. Again, communication. They need to inform the guest of this system. We has tipped everyone except housekeeping, which we did when we left. They wanted 80 to 100 dollars a day per person in the boat for the guides. I wonder how the musky fisherman who "saw" only one musky felt about that? People seem to like it. It has a good reputation, but there were several disgruntled fisherman we talked to. Complaints from no communication, late guides, food is questionable, no dock hands when needed, not so good beds. This was our second time there and I think it was our last. Also, not much thought or effort put into the docks. We watched several people struggle down the steps and on fall trying to step down to a dock. Wouldn't pass a safety inspection. Wondered what there insurance company would think. Very nice lake and lodge though. Some of the nicest mounted fish I have ever seen. Still, won't go back. Sorry.

STAY AWAY!! Called Northwest Flying, Nestor Falls in May 2014 to ask about day trip fly-in lakes…read morefor fishing. I said it would be for one person. They said no issues. They would get me in - just call a couple days before my trip. I call them on June 11, saying I want to do two fly outs one on Fri and one on Sat. They say come in, once I arrive in Nestor Falls. I come in to their office and float plane base, and they don't yet know the schedule for Fri, but I should talk to Kelly at Kelly's Castaways (not sure why Shane is telling me to talk with Kelly, as he does the fly-outs). I talk with Kelly on Thurs, and he says he is going to Shingwak on Sat, and he has just three parties going out, so there is room for one. I go back to the float plane base, and discuss with Shane. He puts me in his book, and says to be at the float plane base on Sat at between 6:30am to 6:45am. I go to the float plane base on Sat at 6:30, and they tell me to go down to Kelly's Castaway's for pick-up there. I drive down, and unload my gear. Kelly comes to tell me he booked another party, and now there is no room for me. I say I was just at the float plane base, and they told me to come down here. He said I must have talked with Shane's father. So no day trip for me, and too late to book another. Very POOR operation, customer service, bad attitude and run around. I should have used Nestor Falls Fly-In Outpost instead. STAY AWAY
