This is a brand new Greek restaurant that has opened in a converted historic church. The menu has…read moreplenty of Greek favourites done with a light, modern style. I had the eggplant dip with flatbread to start and it was a garlicky delight. The bread was fresh and hot and I could have quite happily eaten a lot more of it. My main was a charcoal grilled whole snapper (fish of the day at market prices) served with hand cut chips, a jug of lemon butter sauce and a small Greek salad. The fish was perfectly grilled and beautifully moist inside. The chips were the real deal - no frozen crap here. The lemon butter had a pinch of herbs and was perfect with the fish. The salad was fresh and crisp and complimented the meal. Desserts drift from Greek standards but are nevertheless delicious. Their tiramisu was light (a good size serve) and their "profiterole" was nothing of the sort- lady fingers biscuits with cream and chocolate mousse topped with fresh strawberries. Delightful but not a profiterole.

The cuisine was as advertised, modern with a traditional kick. Everything we ordered was brilliant. Presentation and taste were everything expected and more. Service staff were prompt, polite and attentive and the ambiance was lively and energetic, but personal enough that we didn't have to yell to each other for conversation. Definitely going back, again and again. Congratulations to the owners and all of the staff. You have done yourselves and Penrith proud.

Usually meeting at the pub after rugby, even if it's just tag, builds the image in your mind of a…read moremildly busy, kinda dark and poorly lit place with an incessant chatty background (I love it by the way, that was me loving it). Not at all for The Phoenix, who rose from the ashes of the pub cliche into an elegant and well tended venue, with a good choice of beer and wine, a pub food menu that would make any Aussie happy and the nicest and most available staff I've seen south of Bali! I won't say much on the food aside that it was better than average and probably a three and a half star performance. The venue deserves to be credited for its welcoming counter and decoration and I definitely recommend it to anyone in need of a pub night outside their neighbourhood!

My lasting memory of this Woollahra pub comes from my acting days. I was doing an advert for Barons…read moreBeer (they are based in the offices above the bar) that involved me driving up to the Phoenix in a ute, climbing out and walking through the front door and up to the bar wearing a fine selection of women's clothing (high heels, stockings, pink hot pants and white halter neck top) in front of 2 cricket teams that were having their end-of-season drinks at the time. They turned out to be a good set of extras, and the convincing look of shock on their faces wasn't because they were good actors! Aside from playing host to struggling actors who will cross-dress just to try and make it, not much else really happens there. They used to have poker on Thursdays that a friend of mine ran, but that finished when he moved away. It's definitely a locals pub so don't expect too much else happening, but I do like the fact that it is a rough-round-the-edges pub in one of the most expensive areas in Sydney, and it's a perfectly friendly place to have a drink, and can be a pleasant alternative to some of the overly uptight drinking holes this city has to offer. Oh, and that ad never made it to air. Thank god!

Traditional Gyradiko has opened up in Rosebery!!!!…read more I've heard about this place out in Bexley but since that's a bit of a trek...never made it out there. Well hot damn I'm so glad it just opened up out this way. You can get takeaway or eat in...if you eat in you can bring the whole family as there's plenty of space. They serve alcohol too...what's not to like? You can get a gyro for $9, and if you want chips and a drink just tack on $5...can you say value?!? They have other dishes, but some weren't available yet like their burgers (I will eat you...maybe not now...but I will eat you.) I got the pork gyro and it was fan-fuggin-tastic. Tender meat and their chips are really really good...they must sprinkle the good stuff on them. They also make their own sauces, and I loved their aioli. Will definitely be back to get more gyro goodness as well as trying their platters.

We both ordered a plate which came with crispy, pork cooked to perfection. If you enjoy crackling, get the pork! Side of tasty chips, fresh greek salad, good sized portion of tzatziki and AMAZING pita bread. The small platter cost $16 including a soft drink and the portion size was more than enough for me. The staff were also friendly and chatted to all of the customers who came through. Plenty of seating as well as being a take away shop. Will definitely be going back for a gyro!
