S.H.A.D.O.W. = Save Habitat and Diversity of Wetlands This non-profit group promotes preservation and protection of wetlands. SHADOW provides direct support and assistance, both financial and non-financial, to landowners of environmentally sensitive property and to charitable organizations whose purpose is to preserve environmentally sensitive regions. The organization promotes environmental research, public education and development of ecologically sensitive environmental education facilities with the goal of maintaining and preserving the land for biological and wildlife preservation. One example of this type of activity is the work done at Shadow Lake Bog. Shadow Lake Bog is recognized by the King County Council as a significant wetland and wildlife habitat for Southeast King County. The founders of SHADOW, an area that was previously known as a dumping ground for old refrigerators, cars, and other trash has been cleared out and the area restored through planting and persistent maintenance of native plant species. Volunteers, including the Washington Conservation Corps and local Boy Scouts, constructed a boardwalk into the bog wetland. The boardwalk trail enables visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the unique bog habitat without the difficulty of navigating the uneven terrain and without disturbing the habitat. The Richter Interpretive Center on the grounds includes an education room, with an extensive resource library of books and literature pertinent to their cause, covering topics from birds and amphibians to ecologically sensitive gardening practices and wetland habitats. The interpretive center is also available as a meeting room for interested groups. S.H.A.D.O.W. does offer tours to interested school and community groups http://www.shadowhabitat.org/education/
