In the 2000's I bought by first kayak, then my 2nd, then a canoe. When my daughter moved to the mountains, we bought her a winter coat there. Then, when my house burned down in 2022, I reordered a hat from them that I had lost in the fire. When I went in to pick it up, I found it was already paid for by a younger employee who had only known me a year. Raleigh wouldn't be the same without this store. I have lived in Winston-Salem for one year now. I am so grateful to have found this store! I needed a Yakima rack to be placed back on my car. I made the mistake of going through a car wash and it being ripped off my CRV. The gentleman named Ward scheduled a time for me to stop by and get it replaced. Humble, nice, easy-going, very friendly, didn't charge me a dime for replacing and repairing my mistake. So while I was there I had to support this incredible group of people by buying a pair of Merrell hiking shoes and some farm to feet socks. The prices were in line with what discount shoes is charging for hiking shoes. Aside from all the financial components, the store makes me feel like I'm back in the mountains again. The people are super easy-going and nice, comfortable. I highly recommend going to Great Outdoor Provision's for your outdoor needs. I purchased Tecnica hiking boots online and needed to have them heat molded. This is the only local location that has the equipment to do it. I had emailed to make sure that they would be able to do so on a Saturday. They were very prompt to respond to my email and were expecting me when I arrived. The team at the Winston-Salem location is extremely professional and very knowledgeable. Swain took care of the heat molding process. He was very efficient, knowledgeable and professional. I enjoyed our conversation during the hour that I spent with him. I highly recommend this store for all of your outdoor needs. The store was immaculate and well stocked and the team was top notch. Let's talk Covid-19 pandemic and how the Great Outdoor Provision hooked my kids and I up! 2019 we decided we would finally purchase our own kayaks and start enjoying the many lakes and rivers in NC. Obviously we tried kayaking at the Whitewater center first to make sure this is what we wanted to do. So we visited the Charlotte location, the normal box stores and REI. I'm not bashing none of the stores, but out of all the stores, The Great Outdoor Provision was the one place that actually had salespeople that could answer questions on what type of kayaks met our needs. So fast forward Spring 2020, all set to make a purchase and everything shuts down. We are now going stir crazy! I emailed the Charlotte store as I live closest to it and the same day Rudy emailed me back. I told him what I wanted. Although CLT GOP did not have the kayaks I wanted, Rudy went the extra effort to find them at this Winston-Salem location and hooked me up with Ward and Darren the manager. That was awesome but even better, the guys at this Winston-Salem Great Outdoor Provision Company opened up the store for my two teenagers and myself only to ask questions, try sitting in kayaks, try on life jackets, pick out paddles, basically gave us free range of the store with two hours of attention to us! I cannot say enough great things about this company and buying local! Not to mention the great prices and service, it was like being treated like a VIP. Amazing experience! After our purchase Ward showed us how to secure the kayaks to my roof rack and gave suggestions on additional loading options. We were set, now creating our own adventures and lots of family time! We ended up buying a Hobie Compass 12' for me and two Wilderness Tarpon 105s for the kids with everything else needed to stay safe. We've been on the lake six times now and cannot wait for more parks to open up to try new locations. I personally want to thank Rudy for finding what I wanted and especially Ward for his excellent knowledge and time! I go to this store frequently. I'm always asked if I need assistance. Typically, folks have been knowledgeable and friendly. I tend to be a little disappointed in the amount of items in a category that you can see and buy in the store (as opposed to online). I primarily look at backpacking equipment. There are times when they do not have what I'm looking for, but typically I can find what I need. Prices are not the best, but not incredibly higher than other stores and often the same. I think this store is worth a visit if you're in the market for some outdoor activity equipment. I like it. read more

Went there to buy a kayak walked into the store, guy ask me where's my mask? I have a respiratory issues that make it unhealthy for me to wear a mask! If you do your research on mask especially N95 masks only filter .302 microns (smallest) COVID-19 is .126 microns! So a mask is useless! Won't be buying anything from there ever again!! I wanted to get another pair of Toms and I didn't want to drive to the Birkenstock store and Greensboro. They had a limited selection of sizes and colors, but I was able to get something I liked. This is definitely a store you go to if you are into hunting, fishing and camping. I do not do any of these things and it was apparent. The salesman was ok, kind of awkward, and that in turn made me feel a bit uncomfortable. The cashier, was super chatty and nice to everyone except for me and not very nice. Not sure why I had such an awkward experience, I am tempted to return my shoes and drive to Greensboro where at least I know I will be treated decently. read more

On first visiting the Chapel Hill, NC store about a year ago my wife and I were extremely satisfied with the most amazing customer service the store offered. Nowadays quality customer service is a rarity, so we were pleasantly surprised when we were approached by a young man who obviously knew his store, his products and exactly how to treat a customer. He was thoroughly detailed with his explanations, offered suggestions with no pressure, and we ended up walking out of the store with a new pair of hikers for me. Flash forward about a year, and my how things have changed. Different staff, different atmosphere, different approach. The young girl we had to flag down for assistance seemed bothered by our questions, and getting information from her was worse than pulling teeth. There were several other associates in the store, some helping other customers, but the vibe was totally different. We so thoroughly enjoyed our previous encounter the year before, which is exactly what brought us back, and this time around we wanted to buy a pair of hikers for my wife as well, but we left the store this time extremely dissatisfied and severely annoyed at the steep decline in the level of customer service. Where the professional, helpful young man a year earlier was a treat the young female associate offered absolutely nothing. We had to ask for everything to even get a minor comment out of her. We're not spoiled, wealthy or entitled, and generally keep our expectations very low these days, but what happened at this location? Staffing changes I understand, but the current level of customer service at this store has most certainly caused us to search at REI or some other similar retailer in hopes of finding the kind of customer service we were treated with a year ago here. In the past I have looked at boats here and felt that I was an inconvenience to the staff, so we ended up buying 2 boats some where else. It wasn't a big deal as there are lots of places to by boats. Recently, I went back to buy clothing and was disappointed to find that as far as pants and shorts in women's clothing they don't carry anything above a size 12. I am kind of border line 12, so was only able to find one pair. They told me they just didn't have the space to put out a larger variety of sizes. Otherwise it is an OK store, If they increased their available sizes I would check in there again. Despite the fact that I am a boarder line 12-14 I do hike, and run, and like to do those things in nice clothes and they have nice stuff, sizes 0 to 12. If you are a guy, you are all good, they carried sizes beyond a men's Large. read more

Went to GOP 15 minutes before closing time to look at Chaco's, for our soon to be 9YO and Lauren helped us! She was extremely helpful in explaining the difference in the shoe and what was important about the shoe, etc and she took her time and didn't care that we wanted to try on different pairs and sizes! Here is my experience in GOPC. I was planning on buying a kayak tonight but got terrible customer service. one lady was stuffing her face with cookies in front of my daughter and me. The other lady did not seem to enthused to help. There was a discrepancy about a kayak that said they had in stock online and it not showing up on there in stores inventory paperwork. well the one girl stuffing her face said she saw someone bring a big kayak to there storage..... well I'm standing there thinking they would go check, but no! then I over hear the girl stuffing her face say that we cannot leave one person on the showroom floor at a time. so I am like that's fine. well when I leave I notice a third person working and that's when it I figured out that these two girls where just lazy and had poor customer service skills. I went in the store prepared to buy a kayak and I left as a customer that will never step foot in that place. read more

Even if they don't have a specific model/size/color available, they'll ship it in from their sister stores or order straight from the company for you. Have actually stood in front of the cash register with my purchases and a credit card in my hand and the 2 clerks just kept chatting with each other.
