I drive by at least half a dozen other crossfit gyms on my half hour each way commute to Root 18…read more Situated next door to the A.I. Root Company and along a branch of Route 18, Root 18 already displays its wit, humor and personality. The culture of encouragement and positive reinforcement sets Root 18 apart. It starts with the owners/trainers and attracts like-minded people, all of whom are welcoming from the get-go. The rotation of trainers and workouts offers a variety of teaching skills and styles which is engaging and challenging, mentally and physically. I often come straight from hours at a computer feeling sluggish and reluctant; I always leave energized. The trainers are watchful - making modifications as necessary, yet challenging us to our limits - safely. Safety is another significant difference at Root 18 CrossFit. I'm working my way back to fitness, so the proper balance of cheer and challenge is key. I think I've found my home.

It's not a big gym, but if you're looking for something affordable, I would highly recommend it…read more This gym provides a good balance between equipment and amenities. To illustrate what I mean... A lot of cost-conscious people tend to check out places like the local Planet Fitness, which also offers cheap memberships. Planet Fitness, however, provides only light weights, which makes it more difficult for men (and women!) to make efficient progress. They also provide a lot of inaccurate information ("Bench pressing is only for body builders," for example) and they even prohibit a lot of the exercises that would be most beneficial, even to beginners (bench pressing, deadlifting -- anything that might "intimidate" someone). Soza, on the other hand, is the kind of environment where people can feel challenged without being intimidated. They welcome people of all fitness levels and they provide a good mix of equipment as well. Some of the machines aren't well suited for heavy lifters, but they do have a decent selection of free weights as well as other equipment -- battle ropes, a heavy bag, TRX rigs, and so forth. I would recommend them to anyone who's on a budget.
