We had a group of six ladies from our book club group at one table for lunch. We enjoyed our time at the Great Hunan Restaurant very much! The service was excellent and the food was good. I had the daily lunch special which I shared with a friend. We were both satisfied, having small appetites. Two of the gals got boxes and took their leftovers home, so the portions are ample and the prices are reasonable. I was very disappointed! I'm a General Tso's chicken person, and I was hoping to find a decent plate here since my favorite Chinese place closed down. Nope! It didn't even look like General Tso's chicken! My kids are also sweet and sour chicken kids and their plate was full of dried pieces of chicken. Their crab rangoon had very, very, very, little crab and cream cheese in them and we could barely taste anything other then crusty shell. Very disappointing. We we're excited to add this restaurant into our date night rotation. The last several times we dined here we loved it. My wife and I discussed having dinner here on a regular basis before going to the movies - which is right next-door. This visit, my wife ordered a "lunch portion" $10.95 shrimp dish, as always. However this time, she was hardly able to eat one piece of the shrimp because it was starting to turn. It was extremely fishy tasting, a sure indication of seafood going bad. We spoke to our server and let him know the shrimp was going bad and asked if my wife could order another dish. He was gracious and said that would not be a problem. She ordered a chicken item from the menu this time and it was very good. We thanked them for it and let them know that it was great and we appreciated it. When we received our bill the shrimp dinner was still on our ticket. I asked our server about this and he said "I'm sorry, it shouldn't be on there. I will ask them about that". We were surprised when another employee came to our table and said that they had just received a new shipment of food today so the shrimp is not bad. She continued by saying that the chef had worked really hard on this meal and they would not take the shrimp dinner off of the ticket. My wife offered more than once the idea that they should try her shrimp so they would understand how badly it tasted. I explained that we go there often for dinner, my wife is an avid seafood eater and always orders it from them. We've never had to send anything back before but she's never, not ever, had a piece of shrimp that has tasted this bad... why would we still be charged for the shrimp dinner? The employee then became defensive and told us that other patrons had eaten the shrimp throughout the day and no one else complained so she would not take it off of our bill. We expressed our sadness to her about this because we enjoy going there for dinner and didn't understand why she became defensive. I asked if they were willing to lose customers over a $10.95 dish? Was that how they did business? She would not take the item off the bill. I told her that I would pay for the item but we wouldn't come back again. She told us that that's just how the restaurant business is and that if they lose a customer that was fine. We were so sad about that and I told her that! I also paid $60 for the $40 meal and told her that in no way am I trying to get out of paying for something. That was not the point. The shrimp was truly bad and we should not have been charged for it. So we were really bummed out that we have a place that we looked forward to going to that we will not go to again in the future. I'm on the hunt for GREAT Chinese food in the Idaho Falls area. Great Hunan wasn't it, even though their name led me to give it a try. Don't get me wrong. They were okay. If I had tried their food and then been given the opportunity to name the place, I'd have named it, "Okay Hunan," but "Great" is a little presumptuous. It's a place I might go to again, but it won't be my first choice. Here are the reasons why: 1. SMALL PORTIONS. We had a fairly sizable group, therefore we opted to order "dinner" sized plates and to share "family style." Anytime you order a dinner sized portion, you will not only pay more, but should expect a much larger portion. When they brought the plates out, I thought they had mistakenly brought us small lunch portions. They were extremely conservative with the amount they dolloped onto the tiny plates. 2. Flavor. The flavor was okay, but nothing to dance and celebrate over. Their egg foo young was really weird. It looked and tasted like an omelette. All of the other dishes weren't nasty, and they weren't amazing - just Americanized versions of Chinese dishes. 3. Temperature. It's snowy, icy, and super cold here in Idaho Falls. Please don't turn on the air conditioner. When we walked in and were seated, cold air was blowing down on our table. Why?? Who walks into a restaurant and starts sweating when it's only 10° outside? Who says, "I'm hot. Please turn the air on."?? One table away and 30 minutes later, it was still on the cooler side. So, nothing scathing, disgusting or absolutely horrific. Just an okay experience. Therefore, I shall give this restaurant the honorary name of "Okay Hunan." read more

If you are looking for authentic Chinese food do not come here. I came here with a party of 7, with no one else in the restaurant we were immediately seated which was great! Sitting at the table there was soy sauce, sweet and sour sauce, and a spicy mustard on the table which I found odd. I shared a their dinner special plate which included Kung pao, sweet and sour, and their veggie deluxe entrees, and a side or pot stickers with another member of the table. The only authentic part of this experience was that you share the rice wit everyone. The sauces were very watered down. I don't even know what kind of sauce was on the veggies, but it was like it had a stick of butter on it. The pot stickers fell apart after eating one bite. The waitress only brought out the chili sauce with the potstickers and it was basically a paste. The appetizer egg drop soup was the saltiest I've ever had and it was lukewarm. The only good thing about the service I received was that because the restaurant was empty my party was seated quickly. The rest of the night the service was pretty rude and didn't care that we were here. I will not be going back here and I don't recommend it. read more

Not good Chinese food. I went at 1:30pm, so I'm sure the rice and soup were prepared 3+ hours prior to my arrival, but that's no excuse for dry rice and bland egg drop soup. Charging $1.50 for a bag of crispy noodles for my soup is a joke. Ordered the General's Chicken lunch special. Smallest pieces of chicken I've ever seen. Since they were so small, even a slight overcooking makes them dry, stringy, and nearly inedible. The sauce at most restaurants is viscous and reddish-brown. General Tso's sauce here is runny (almost watery) and fairly translucent. There are several other options in town. I don't see myself going back to Great Hunan any time soon. First time here and last time. I've lived in the area most my life yet never tried it until today. Should have kept avoiding it! Ordered 4 items. Price was very high for the amount of food we got. In fact I'd say rip off is the first words that come to mind. Food wasn't that great either. I'll be going back to my favorite Yummy House. Attitude wasn't that great either. Cook was eating food while cooking as well. I've traveled all over the United Stated and abroad and I do realize we live in East Idaho but there are way better option locally. This is one of my favorite Chinese places in the area. Their food doesn't leave me feeling like garbage after I eat it. It uses good, real flavors, and the food is a high quality. I've fallen in love with their sesame chicken, as it is not heavily breaded or super deep fried, but rather cooked in a wok, as with most of their food. I eat here at least a few times a month. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had in my life. Really small portions. We ordered the orange chicken, which was a breaded chicken breast, cut in strips, with no sauce. The only thing that made it "orange" was the orange slices garnishing the chicken. The other entree we ordered was the General chicken. It was okay. Best Chinese food in town, hands down. I highly recommend this restaurant. The food is always fresh and absolutely delicious. I love this place, I've been going for years, the generals chicken is the best I've ever had, once you order you have soup as part of your meal within a minute or two. Appetizers come shortly thereafter even on busier nights. The wait staff isn't the most attentive but you can get drinks at the soda machine whenever you want.
