I came for the much desired hot chocolate and it didn't disappoint! The marshmallow was amazing and the hot chocolate was very rich! I want to know if I come back, if you'll put marshmallow like that around a cup and then fill it with ice cream! I was well taken care of by the staff. Everyone was wonderful! Cory took care of me directly and was amazing! I love the shop! The pink and green pastels remind me of happy childhood days! So cute! read more

The ice cream needs some work; it really wasn't our favorite. It was very icy unfortunately. The cookie dough also only had about 2 or 3 pieces of cookie dough in the single scoop. Hopefully this is a one-off occurrence! The service was very quick and everyone was very nice and helpful! The building/space is a little dingy. I think they tried to paint it fun colors and put some decorations up, but it still reads a little outdated. If you're in the area looking for ice cream, it could check the box. I think they need some work though based on our experience. read more

Gray's Ice Cream - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Bristol, Rhode Island

Truly some of the best ice cream I've ever had! Their oreo is DELICIOUS and creamy and they definitely don't skimp on the Oreo. Their prices are affordable and the service is quick. There's a good amount of indoor seating as well as options outside. Kylie, Evelyn, James, and Eden were super nice and speedy with our scoops! Already can't wait to come back. read more

The American birthday cake ice cream is amazing! Staff was friendly as well. Price kinda high but still worth it

My daughter bought me a container of the peaches n cream and my goodness the ice cream tastes like the stuff we'd eat in the 80s in the Deep South. One spoon took me back to my childhood in Louisiana and I write this in the highest regard. My only regret is that I've just discovered Gary's. However, I'm looking forward to many more visits...starting this weekend. Incredible ice cream! read more

Excellent ice cream. Had the coffee chip and would get it again. Strong coffee flavor, and nice chunks of chocolate.

Excellent ice cream - all flavors. Service was very good and easy for customers. Parking is a treat with no charge and plenty of available space. read more

This ice cream place is truly special. We had the smallest size, but I would definitely recommend bringing some home because there's not much like this in Boston. It's very airy and special hard to describe the texture. They also have a location in Tiverton. read more

The best ice cream in Rhode Island! Gorgeous spot in a beautiful historic building. Cheery service. Yummy Vegan flavors, too.

Best homemade ice cream in the state. Love the people who work there. The ice cream is tasty and you get good portions. A classic old fashioned ice cream shop. Love it. read more

Used to be amazing. Now it's just overpriced, basic ice cream. Nothing great. The building is decrepit and outdated, not in a charming way but in a bad way. The owner is mean spirited and rude. read more

I wanted to love Gray's more than I did. This is the second time I've been here where they have been out of things (malt, peanut butter cups). Prices are high for the portions. The Bristol location also has limited flavors compared to what they list on their website. No peanut butter ice cream. The ice cream temperature also seems a little less cold than most places. It melted very quickly. I'd go back if it we randomly walked by and felt like ice cream, but I wouldn't seek it out. read more

Something not right - the ice cream served here was very soft and melty, maybe a problem with the freezers. Went here with friends after seeing Gray's had good reviews for ice cream. I tried the ginger and lemon ice cream flavors, my friends got some others, but the others said that their ice cream were not good and threw most of it away within a block of the store and said worst ice cream that had had. So disappointing! We had driven here from Newport just to try Gray's! I thought my cone tasted okay, but it was very dripping, even on a cold day in the 50s, it was already running down with melting, texture not right. Not sure what, was more soft like a custard or soft serve than a hard pack ice cream. We moved on towards some other stores but my friends were so bummed we didn't try going to any other ice cream stores later that day. We had really good ice cream the previous day at another location, maybe my friends were just grumpy with the comparison, both shops had excellent reviews in yelp. I'm hoping this was a one off problem with the freezers, but they should have sold ice cream that was having a problem. read more

Always delicious. A single serve is still quite large so you will never be disappointed. The waffle cones are made fresh and are so good. Fun to watch too. I highly recommend both Bristol ( on the water) and Tiverton four corners. Enjoy! read more

Grays Ice Cream is located at the end of the pier next to Thames Bar and Grille. This is an extension of the original Gray's in Tiverton that's been around since 1923 and just as good, featuring waterfront views and fantastic treats. We had lunch next door at the Thames Waterfront Bar and Grill and this seemed a natural way to finish off the lunch meal. It was fairly warm and the cool ice cream just fit the scenic view and made a complete finish to the recent lobster roll. This location is more shack-like with cedar siding and a huge painted medallion of an ice cream cone adorning the gable above a small ordering window. While Gray's doesn't have dedicated seating, there are many benches and rails where you can eat in peace while enjoying Bristol Bay. The ice cream itself is quite the delight - it appears to be a high-milk content/fat variety that is very homemade in consistency and flavor, I sampled the pistachio (which I highly recommended) before going with the coconut which was delicious. My friend Sid went with the Cookie Dough which was also quite good. If you love ice cream as much as I do (and it's really the only dessert that I can't say "no" to) then you'll try Gray's. Note that this is a cash-only business. (also posted in slightly different form to my food blog) read more

Ordered a pistachio ice cream cone. Found it very icy rather than creamy. Disappointing. Same-thing holds true with Tiverton location as well. read more

Excellent ice cream place. Large portions, big selection, fast service. I had the mint chocolate ice cream and it was great. Recommended.

Great service! A young man named James helped my friends and I, he was truly excellent! Great ice cream and employees!

Absolutely delicious ice cream! I loved the Pistachio without nuts! I also had my favorite Black Raspberry and it was delicious as usual!! The ice cream from Grays is delicious and I'm psyched that I don't need to drive out to Little Compton to get it!! read more

Located a short ways off of the often busy Thames St., Gray's Ice Cream is an enticing stop for a cool treat while walking around Newport. The prices are comparable to Ben & Jerry's and there are some fun sundae flavors such as strawberry cheesecake, s'mores, and coffee toffee. I tried the s'mores sundae which contained vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, melted marshmallow, and crushed graham cracker. The sundae was alright - there was almost equal parts marshmallow to ice cream (i.e. way too much marshmallow), and the ice cream was a bit too soft (it had the same texture as the melted marshmallow). Still, the hot fudge and crushed graham cracker were tasty additions. Overall, Gray's is a solid option for a scoop of ice cream or a sundae in Newport. It's located further from all of the commotion on Thames and is a small, local business with reasonable pricing. read more

In a party of 7, they made sure everyone felt special. For my nut allergy: they made it evident their ice cream was processed on a line with nuts but they scoop with a separate scoop in a new container of ice cream. This was greatly appreciated. The ice cream was very creamy, some of the best I have ever head. Perfect ending to a night in Bristol. read more

Gray's Ice Cream - Nightly special: Coffee Oreo( already a few licks in, I couldn't help it!) - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Bristol, Rhode Island

Two stars for the nice staff but the ice cream gets none. It was not good. Been to Gray's in Tiverton many times, so approached with anticipation. but here the ice cream was sticky (gooey?) , crystally, and over sweet. Maybe melted and refrozen? But we didn't know until we got huge portions or terrible ice cream for too much $$ read more

Gray's Ice Cream - Gray's Black Raspberry Ice cream and a waffle cone of course! - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Bristol, Rhode Island

I wanted peanut butter cup, but they were out. So I got strawberry cheesecake. I didnt see any pieces of cheesecake, so I asked if she gave me just strawberry. She said it was the right flavor, and that some batches have less chunks of cheesecake in them. Well guess what, I ate the whole cup and there wasn't a single piece of cheesecake. There wasn't even a crumb from this so called cheesecake. They ought to call the flavor strawberry cheesecake surprise. Surprise! There's no cheesecake. I guess I got a bad batch, or they don't know how to make ice cream. My girlfriend said her chocolate wasn't that great either. Congrats! You've managed to ruin ice cream, I didn't even know that was possible. read more

I have been coming to Gray's, especially the original location in Tiverton for over 30 years, basically as soon as I could eat ice cream. It definitely is a family tradition. My father got me hooked on their pistachio ice cream. Oh my... the absolute best and the only flavor I ever get. Smooth, creamy, with NO NUTS which is why it's my favorite. You can't find pistachio without nuts anywhere else, and I love how they have stayed true to this for all these years. I love it so much, and I'm sure if you tried it, it may become your new favorite too! Glad you are still going strong for decades and I hope you stay that way forever! read more

Sweetie, Homegirl has GOT to cool off!! Pit stains on this Dior Couture is not a good look for Homegirl. Before you continue to read, you need some Homegirl History. 1. Homegirl is classssssy 2. Yes, Homegirl has two pennies to rub together, but she also gonna be lookin for MORE pennies on the sidewalk! 3. Homegirl is a thin mint tryna get extra thinny minty Now Homegirl frequents Bristol on the weekly. I'm not gonna say which days because y'all tryna be askin for pictures in bad lighting. On the rare occasion, Homegirl will be bamboozled into "summer fun" at the cost of my snatched waist line. Homegirl is tryna keep the bod! Would you use 'regular' gas on a Lamborghini? No baby we need the créme de la créme. This body don't run on dunkin. It runs on egg whites and celery bites. But if homegirls crew was going she wasn't going to put on the curb. Homegirl shared and Oreo cookie ice cream of some sort. Homegirl has heard that Oreos are some sort of popular cream filled cookie often dipped in various milks. She was splittin the ice cream but not the price! Honey it was pricey! My crew takes care of me in times like this because If im getting love handles, I'm not gonna be paying for them! 2 smalls and one double scoop came out to $13.50. That could of been 1/9 payments for a new "as seen on TV"copper pan set! The ice cream was, I'll admit, fat and sugar on a spoon. Slid down my gulllet easier than 99% lean ground turkey -that's for sure. The more Oreo chunks the better. It wasn't out of this world amazing, but it was really good. A solid 7/10. Now Homegirl is no google earth but she was thoroughly confused when she found the new location! Grays was on the dock, but has moved to the corner white building directly behind. Homegirl isn't a realtor either but could be if she wanted. She would be telling Grays one thing as their client-location baby, location baby, location baby!!! You had one piece of plywood as your sign! Grays isn't even gray anymore! It's charming previous location was an aged wood shingle, but now it is a white corner with unassuming signage. Why you so shy in front of Homegirl? Was it her icy white teeth competing with the brightest pearl necklace money can buy on this aide of the Equator? Or was it her sultry deep smokey eye, contoured cheek and nude lip? Homegirl is just like you. She puts her diamonds on one finger at a time! All in all, Homegirl wants to enjoy her weekly allotment of sugar in one bite -for a couple coins less! Good ice cream. Not amazing, but good. And remember that Homegirl was also quoted calling Harambe the gorilla "good" circa May 2014. Homegirls compliment of " good" is higher than most. She's similar to Simon Cowell in that way. Homegirl just wants you Grays, not be hidden like pearl in a crusted busted dusted oyster. Homegirl has shown you her divinity and grace. Homegirl just wants some signs, some color, and some 'come and get it' vibes. read more

In contrary to the other review, I think Gray's Ice Cream has always been a popular icon for the locals with really friendly service and great icecream. The selection may not be as expansive as your Wal-Mart chain icecream shops, but the ice cream is really amazing and goes perfectly with a walk along the coast. I don't eat ice cream often, but whenever my friends come and visit me from out of states, I take them to try an Awful Awful (Newport Creamery) and then take them immediately here. Food: 3 stars Service: 4 stars Price: 3 stars (not that expensive) read more

So I have tried both this location and the original about 3 times. Every time, the ice cream felt like it was the bottom of the barrel or freezer burnt. The sizes were small and honestly, there are much better quality ice cream shops within 20 minutes. read more

This ice cream is good, but it is hard to go wrong. Too sweet for my taste and I'm not a fan of the artificial colors.

Outstanding ice cream in a beautiful location. Staff is super friendly and attentive. The ice cream is some of the best around- not the mass produced stuff you get in some places! All of the standard favors, plus some creative specials. Waffle cones being made before your eyes (and definitely worth the extra dollar). If you like a good milk shake/ frappe/ cabinet / whatever you call it in your part of the world, then I'd suggest getting the extra thick frappe at Gray's. read more

Real deal fresh homemade ice cream. First bite and I was a believer. Unlike some ice cream, at Gray's you can really taste the cream. Following the recommendation of scooper I went with the chocolate chip cookie dough. It was rich, smooth and delicious. Can beat the view on the dock on the bay with sea breeze. Only complaint, $4.50 for single scoop is not the cheapest around. But quality ingredients warrant the price. read more

Ice cream was delicious, however I have never had a worse customer service experience in Bristol. My friends and I arrived at 6:45pm on Sept. 15 aware that they close at 7. As soon as we approached the window one of the workers stuck her head out and said "Just so you know we technically close in 10 minutes so there are no more frappes and no more waffle cones but we'll still serve you" in a very disrespectful tone. My group had about 8 people and after a few of us ordered she says "and who will be paying for all this" again VERY rude and disrespectful. In the middle of all of us ordering she runs outside and rips down the flag that says open clearly annoyed that a couple people had joined the line behind us. Also she was in such a rush that a few of my friends sundaes had whipped cream and hot fudge all over the cups they were practically falling over. As someone who has worked in restaurants and retail stores for years, I found this woman's actions and attitudes to be extremely disrespectful and if I had acted this way as a worker I would have gotten in serious trouble by my manager. If there are customers waiting, you serve them with a smile. I understand that you may want to go home but there is no reason to be so disrespectful to customers. I also overheard after that they turned people away who had been in line behind us. I will not be returning and I think someone should have a talk with this worker. read more

Best home made ice cream around! A bit pricy but on most occasions, not all, you'll get a really large scoop. Last time I went (9/3/16) for what has been a habit this summer, the size, but not the flavor nor the quality, was disappointing. 1 star off for inconsistency. If I were a cute young chick, maybe the guy would have put more effort into it. read more

By far the best Ice cream I've ever had!!! We used to live in Bristol and moved to KY two years ago. We Cannot find ice cream anywhere as good as Grays. My daughters love mint choc chip, coffee, and black raspberry- we cannot wait for out next visit read more

I had to write a review for the Bristol sub-sect of Gray's Ice Cream. The ice cream is some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Along with that, the Bristol location does give large portions, but it is pricey. The small here is probably about a medium at other ice cream shops, but they are approximately 3.50. It's location is fantastic, right along the docks that are lit up at night, in the center of other good restaurants with a quaint feel (cobblestone paths, etc.) It's location is also great if you'd like to walk around and check out the Bristol shops. I give Gray's 4 stars because I'd rather pay 3.50 for quality and support a longstanding Rhode Island tradition. But, if you are looking to buy ice cream for a family, particularly with small children, you'll spend about 20 dollars, which isn't reasonable in this economy. read more
