I've decided to go back to being pretty finicky when it comes to five star ratings. And I think Gray Dog could get there. I just have decided that perhaps it's best to be able to bump a rating up when more data is gained if I have reason to be on the fence. That being said, I think it's a great shop. I felt calm energy right when I entered. I was immediately acknowledged when I came in even though shop keeper was upstairs. He didn't bug me once he was available, which was very appreciated. He was helpful without being invasive. I look forward to going back and experiencing more of the shop. I think I might feel good about consigning stuff there. Which to me is a big deal because I am quick to avoid situations that aren't a fit. I will say some of the good things that I would want at any guitar shop that I experienced here (and don't often other places) I felt like Addison likes engaging and answering questions. We didn't get super deep about materials, manufacturers, history etc. but the stuff we touched on seemed familiar to him. What I'd like to be a little better: As a female dealing with stuff that tends to be male dominated can be frustrating at times. I've been sitting behind my drum set waiting to play a gig and been asked where my boyfriend the drummer was (to be clear I was the drummer and there was no boyfriend.) I think things I was told during my visit were with good intention, but I find I often have to reveal more than I'm comfortable with about what I have gear wise before it's understood I know things like vintage guitars have a perceived value due to their age and rarity. I see how guys are treated and the baseline assumptions are just different. To be fair, that might not have been a factor, but I think it's something I'd need to observe more. And I think it's something to be aware of. That being said, I plan to return. Having strong local music resources is very important to me, and this store is helping sway me in the direction of moving to Prescott. If you go when Addison is there I believe you will be very well taken care of. read more

The guy working there, part owner, was a bit abrupt. I was looking at a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster. He said it was $3,500 which seemed reasonable. Then a guy walked in, interrupted the conversation. The owner started talking to him about a repair. I was left standing there. I wanted to try the guitar but I was so disappointed that I didn't buy it. I like having a good experience when I buy guitars (I buy / sell / collect high end guitars, basses and amps). But if I bought this one, I would have thought of the disappointing experience every time played it. Hopefully the owners will review this post and make some changes to their customer service. read more

Gray Dog is a great little guitar store. Small but mighty! They carry a wide variety of electric and acoustic guitars in every price range. You can find new and used Fender, Guild, Gretch, Taylor, Recording King, and on and on. They buy, sell, and trade. There is always a great variety and those occasional hidden gems that you hoped to find in a legit guitar shop. The acoustic guitars are kept in a nice little humidor-type, glass-wall room where you can sit and play without the noise distraction of the main area. There are plenty of electric guitars and basses in the main area, with amplifiers to try them out. This also carry the guitar strings and all the accessories that you would need and expect. Which brings me to a point: Sometimes I think it is necessary to make a comment about other yelp review that are off the mark. I am not referring to a difference of opinion about a business, or an experience thereof, but to the foundation behind the critical comments. Someone gave this shop lower marks because the shop meet their expectations on sheet music and teaching services. Frankly, that is a silly expectation. The shop is called Gray Dog Guitars not "music store." They don't purport to be anything other than what they are: a guitar shop. And to that, they meet the criteria in spades! Besides, every legit and experienced musician knows, that the paper publishing music business has died. You buy that stuff online, (or get it free, including all levels of lessons, thank you interwebs), but not in a brick-and-mortar. Not so much anymore. But I digress... Addison, the main man here, really knows his stuff. Hes personable and helpful. He's a professional musician himself, and can well assist the naive buyer as well as the seasoned pro. Great little guitar store on Cortez across the Street from The Raven Guitar. Small selection, used guitars, some vintage amps too. I wanted to buy a book on guitar scales and a distortion pedal but they have barely and selection of books or pedals. That's ok, can go anywhere for that stuff, but has essentials, guitar stands, strings, picks, amp cords. All the basics for a small town. I think it's owned by the Raven and the Perrigine book store? Nice little guitar store, I'll be back as needed. No Lessons and they really don't do guitar repairs. Little small town lazy! read more

Gray Dog Guitars is a wonderful treasure located in the heart of historic downtown Prescott, AZ. I moved to this quaint mile-high town in search of a healthier life. When it came to buying, selling, setting-up and repairing my guitars, I assumed I'd be making many trips down to Phoenix to meet my musical needs. I was pleasantly surprised to find a local music store filled with unique stringed instruments that is owned and managed by the coolest cats (or dogs). Gray Dog has a welcoming vibe that feels like home. It's the perfect place to demo new and used guitars, sell an old axe on consignment, or get top-notch guitar tech/luthier work done. It's everything I look for in a music store and much, much more . . . it's friendly, funky, groovy . . . and . . . has competitive prices. You know, downtown shops tend to be tourist traps, but that's not the case with Gray Dog Guitars. Their services and instruments are affordable and dangerously tempting. ;-) I plan to pop-in weekly to check out new arrivals and to chat with other customers and staff until they kick me out. I give this gem of a store two big thumbs up. It's definitely worth a visit or two for anyone in the area who's into music. I think they even have a rack or two of vinyl. What's not to love? Great service. Fantastic Customer interaction. Came in on a Sunday afternoon to have all of my strings on my guitar replaced; not only were they replaced but was also given proper instructions on how to stretch the strings, but how to maintain the strings for proper tuning. This little store is very deceptive - great selection of guitars and customer service that I haven't experienced in a guitar store before. I am happy to say that I will be a repeat customer and I will highly recommend this store to my friends. read more
