a meal in a styrofoam container

Omg. This is the best homemade food! Everything was so delicious especially the braised cabbage! I accidentally dug in before taking a pic!

Make it everyday, but come early!

This place always has a line out the door ...this time I stood in line. I ordered the fried chicken and the broccoli salad; too balance the good with the bad. The chicken was good and I loved the tea. Next time, I'll try the roll. I was hoping the cornbread would be sweeter, after all we live in the South! The decor is a homage to the 70s and your great grandmothers knitting and cooking! Super cute! Good food and a local lunch favorite!

Fried Chicken platter

Ok so outside of the friendly staff I'm not sure what to say about this place. The price I paid was like $9 so for the price I can complain. I feel like the macaroni may have been out of a box and then doctored up to taste better. I mean the food wasn't horrible but I have had better. The chicken was well cooked and crispy. The corn muffin didn't have any sweetness to me and the tea was just ok and maybe that's because I'm used to drinking what some call tea as diabetes in a cup (a ton of sugar).

Meatloaf!

One of the best meat and three lunch spots ANYWHERE! While the entrees are incredible, the list of sides will blow you away, and everything is always fresh and delicious. Can't beat the fried chicken, fried catfish country fried steak and meatloaf! Definitely a place you want to grab a dessert too! Another great Downtown restaurant.

BBQ Pork chop, Brussels sprouts & corn bread

They're cheap, perfect servings, have a cute atmosphere, and an efficient concept going. However, I wasn't impressed with the pork chop (all they did was pour BBQ sauce on it) or the corn bread (tastes like it was from a box mix). I'd probably give them another shot though.

The tomato pie is amazing! Eat it and consider taking a whole one home to share! How can tomatoes taste so good in March?

Down home cooking. Great veggie plate. Everything good. Especially fried chicken. Sides do sell out so better to go before noon.

Tomato Pie is the bomb. Also had the baked potato casserole and the sweet potato roll. All excellent. Great value as well.

One of the best lunch places in Hattiesburg. Cool funky atmosphere, good portions at a good price. Wish they offered dinner!

In my mind, Bert's and Cynt's reminded me of one of my favorite local spots near work, so I came in expecting similarly good food. I ordered the catfish po-boy and fries. The fish portion was huge--a single giant filet that I had to eat down a bit before I could even close the sandwich. The catfish was tender and cooked well, but it lacked seasoning and ended up tasting a little bland. Unfortunately, I also got a mouthful of something crunchy--pretty sure it was a patch of small bones--which was a bit unsettling. The lettuce, tomato, and mayo didn't add much and could've been left off without changing much. The fries, however, were the star of the meal--hot, crisp on the outside, tender in the middle, and loaded with seasoning. While I wouldn't order the catfish po-boy again, I'm not giving up on Bert's and Cynt's just yet. I'll be back to give their burgers a try--they look promising!

It is only open for lunch from 11-2pm Tuesday through Saturday. We made sure we got in line a few minutes before 11am. Yes a line, so get there early. The doors opened right at 11am and you order from the counter and have a seat. The staff is welcoming and assist with the line and seating to have everything move smoothly. The prices were not bad at all and we got alot of food. The fried chicken is out of this world. A must get. You won't regret it. It is so flavorful with crispy skin, yet moist chicken. Also, it is not super greasy which was my favorite part. I enjoyed the green beans and corn on the cob. The jalapeño corn bread was amazing! My mom got the black eyed peas, mac n cheese, and regular cornbread with her fried chicken. She raved about the black eyes peas. We also ordered banana pudding and Mrs. Pearl's Cheesecake. The banana pudding was my favorite and a great sweet treat to round out my southern meal. The inside of the diner is not very large but does have plenty of seating inside and some outside. While we did not see Mrs. Pearl, her sister greeted us and was definitely running the diner while we were there.
