Rock N Roll Providence Half Marathon - The race course!

Well, now I know that when the Rock N Roll crew says "rain or shine," they mean it. The race took…read moreplace in a downpour, and kudos to the volunteers and organizers for making sure water stops, medical tents, and finish line were all fully staffed despite the horrible weather. As Stephanie mentioned in her review, a good number of the bands who were supposed to play along the course didn't show up. I do blame them. The bands had tent coverage, and the ones who were there seemed well protected from the weather. Part of the allure of this race was the live entertainment and it was basically missing for the middle third of the course. Boo to the bands who can't handle bad weather. Don't sign up to play at this sort of event if you won't show up in rain. On the flip side, an extra YAY for the bands who did play. It was cool to be serenaded with live music throughout the course. And it was great to see so many Providence residents out on their porches cheering--and local cheerleading squads organized at several points on the route! The course itself was definitely a good one, although hillier in the second half than I'd expected. A steep uphill to the finish felt a bit cruel. Still, I appreciated long straightaways along gorgeous tree-lined streets. Mile markers were clearly placed with digital clocks recording the race time, and time was captured at the 5k, 10k, 10m, and 12m marks. The wave start was also extremely well-planned and resulted in a fairly non-crowded course, although we were delayed in starting about 20 minutes due to some sort of street congestion. Unfortunately one consequence of the torrential rain was huge puddles along the course, sometimes unavoidable. Even my wicking socks couldn't prevent some nasty blisters from soaked footwear. Finally, the all important issue of THE RACE T-SHIRT: Short-sleeved, navy blue, technical tee with an understated almost nautical logo. Unfortunately they are cut for men and run a bit large, so mine is pretty long on me, but I think this will be a nice addition to my running collection. I'd suggest getting some ladies' shirts next time--the race costs enough. Overall, this wasn't a bad little race. I'd do it again next year, but definitely pray for sun.

Whereas others lament the rain, I loved it and was hoping for the same this time (2012). Instead we were greeted with low to mid 70's -- equally good weather -- and the benefit of hearing the headliner band among others. Add to this that the city of Providence, made the weekend a festive one with Water Fire and evening entertainment -- something I missed by one week last year -- great move, there. I love the course -- it's a good mix of easy and challenging and offers different views of the city for one who is not a local (I come fr CA). There is nothing like finishing a race all "Rocky" status while running the last point one mile up to the State House. Even though it was my 2nd time running this, I still welled up a bit....just don't ask me about my finishing time :\ ...maybe that was the real source of my tears. lol.

Beyond it, the open kitchen glows with steel and fire, cooks moving with a rhythm that feels almost cinematic. Then you notice the pool next door, separated by glass, a surreal 50s hotel tableau pressed right against the dining room. It should feel strange, but it works. It is Boston trying on a different skin for the night. Once you sit, the noise settles into something closer to a pulse. It is loud, it is chaotic, and it invites you to stop pretending you wanted a quiet dinner. People are celebrating, laughing, living a little bit outside the lines, and you feel like you should be part of it. This is not a place for restraint. This is a place to lean in. The service is friendly and stretched thin at the same time, the way any good party gets ahead of its hosts now and then. My Sapporo took longer than it should have, and the food drifted out at its own pace. It was a busy night. I was ready to move faster, keep the fun sailing along at a steady clip, but sometimes the tide is not yours to control. When the potstickers arrived, they were gone almost instantly. Pork and shrimp packed tight with a dipping sauce that had a little kick but never tried to prove anything. Four of them, which is too few for people who enjoy eating, but just enough to make you want the next thing even more. Then came the burger, the dish that carries the weight of reputation here. The Wagyu Cheeseburger is not subtle. It is rich, salty in the right ways, and built with the kind of confidence that does not bother asking how you want it cooked. They know what they are doing, and they do it well. The shoelace fries are the right choice. Crispy, light, perfect for scooping up whatever spills out of the bun. It is the kind of burger you could eat twice and still want another bite. The Sapporo, once it finally landed, was a clean, easy drink. Light enough to go down fast, familiar enough to not distract from the food. It paired well with everything, especially the burger, which demanded something cold and uncomplicated. Portions were exactly what they needed to be. The potstickers, good but fleeting. The burger, perfectly sized and gone too soon, in the way that all great burgers disappear. When the night wrapped up, the standout was obvious. The burger alone is worth the trip. The only disappointment was waiting for that first beer, watching the party start around me while my own spark waited for a match. Hojoko is the kind of place where the noise hits first, the grill smoke follows, and before you know it you are swept into a night that feels louder, faster, and more alive than you expected, all anchored by a burger worth crossing the city for.

Naturally I gave this poor miserable woman my 20$ bill and 9 cents.. she was so nasty and rude about waiting an extra 20 seconds AT MOST for my 9 cents that I provided so I would receive bills back instead of adding to the already ridiculous amount of change accumulating in my purse. I waited in line behind all of the alcoholics and obnoxious a**holes buying their scratch tickets taking literally 5+ minutes to cash out but this chick had the nerve to be a miserable (insert expletive here) to me because I said I had the change. Just because you're pregnant doesn't give you the right to treat people like shit. You're not the only one who's ever carried a life inside of you and had to work sister. Be nasty to me for no reason and Ill have zero sympathy for you. Next time I'll be sure to go out of my way to pay with the 6$ strictly in change in my purse when I come here.
