I've been going to Grand River Barber Company for the past two years, and unfortunately, it has been a consistently disappointing experience. My first visit was rushed--the barber (who no longer works there) sped through my haircut, ignored my requests, and seemed more focused on finishing quickly than delivering quality work. Wanting to give the shop another chance, I booked an appointment today with Miland. Simply put--he is not ready to be a professional barber. While he's a nice guy, his skills and professionalism need serious improvement. My 1:45 PM appointment dragged on until 3:37 PM--nearly two hours for a standard haircut. He continuously dropped his tools, struggled to understand the style I wanted (despite showing multiple reference photos), and was extremely distracted throughout the appointment. To make matters worse, he was taking phone calls during my haircut regarding another client, who had a 2:30 PM appointment but eventually walked out after waiting 30 minutes. He also kept chatting with people walking in and out, which made the experience even more unprofessional. This shop needs to set higher standards or provide better training to their barbers. If you're looking for a reliable, professional haircut, I'd strongly recommend going elsewhere until they improve. read more

It's a pretty steep charge, especially for college students but show them a picture of what you want and you will be guaranteed a good haircut. I have only gone to this place once with an online appointment, so the other bad reviews may be trusted. If there are waiting/service issues with walk-ins, then I suppose it's true. I can say that this location is trans friendly to masc-aligned people. I booked an appointment with Jackie and it felt very normal and respectful. And I like the hair trim I got (coming from a person that is not picky about their hair). So, if you are transgender and are simply looking for a more relatable/comfortable space to have a hair trim, this is a safe place to try. And I recommend Jackie for sure. Note: They do have a store dog! It seems a pretty energetic, but also very well-behaved when listening to barbers. I did not know this until I entered the building. read more

This place straight up sucks. Do not come here if you want anything other than a line up or a fade. They cut your hair super short and they aren't good at that either. I told them to not take much off and just clean up around my ears and they shaved all the hair on the side of my head off. I had this Nick guy and he had me facing away from the mirror so I couldn't see what he was doing. When I turned around I couldn't believe what he did. When I read these reviews I didn't think too much. I thought the place had to be decent for a 30 dollar haircut, but it sucks. read more

This was to be my 4th cut here. I usually make an online appointment, but was in town and walked in at 2:00 I was told I could get a cut as a walk in, there was one person in front of me. After 45 minutes he left, moving me up to first in line. 45 minutes later someone came over and asked if I had an appointment, I said no, I'm the next walk in. He said sorry, we can't do any walk in's today. Everyone in that barbershop heard me ask for a walk in, and they all heard a employee tell me I would be taken care of. I like the guy who cuts my hair but they lack a supervisor position to handle the shop. They have a poor service environment and don't seem to want to improve that image. I won't be back. read more

I believe this is only the second review I made without visiting the establishment or using its services or products. I am doing so to hopefully alert management/ownership to the pitfalls of relying on the 21st century. I am traveling to Lansing today and am in dire need of a haircut, and this place has fantastic reviews, so it seemed like the place to go. I called to set up an appointment for tomorrow morning and the young woman who took my call said I had to book online. Ok, not optimal for me at that moment, but whatever. I then asked if she could tell me if they had openings as my internet connectivity was spotty. She said there was no way she could tell and then then just trailed off. So I went onto the website and first was faced with about a dozen options. Almost all of them were self explanatory but seeing as I have a beard as well, I thought it may be nice to have the whole kit and caboodle tamed. They offered various services, most pretty self explanatory, but for a beard trim and deluxe cut and style (I think it was what I wanted instead of the Haircut with Design), it would take them 90 minutes. They offer this Head & Face Treatment that might have been what the doctor ordered; however, there is no way to know what any of their services offer. The website doesn't say. When you click on a particular service, e.g. Deluxe Cut and Style, you get links to 10 or so stylists. On an iPhone you have a 1/16" picture that, when clicked, goes to their schedule. No introduction just a list of dates. In order to find out if Stylist A is available you have to look at his/her schedule, then Stylist B, Stylist C, etc. You are thinking right now, what's the big deal? You aren't from Lansing so why would it matter who each of them are? Of the issues I raised, this one is the least offending. Honestly, I first looked at the guys with beards as that has always worked well for me. It just seems odd that if the establishment is going to completely rely on a website, they would put some effort into it. No, the frustrating things were not being able understand their definition for the services they offered AND having to go through all the profiles to find someone who may be available. So I thought would call back and see if the manager could help me with this. Wow, condescending much? He was polite but apparently he has the impression his Lansing neighbors all fell off a turnip truck. I got a haughty contrast of barbershops versus men's salons. What I got out of it is this; the stylists are independent contractors who pay for a chair and space and this establishment does little to actually help them get new clients. So an open note to the manager. Take some business classes and learn how many people silently respond as I did, but just don't take the time or effort to share it. They just find a more hospitable business. read more

If I could give zero stars I would, Grand River Barber Company has completely gone down in quality recently. Most of their good barbers have moved to a shop just behind this location. The last time I went to Grand River Barber Co. I waited 2 hours for my haircut, when I finally got my haircut the barber did a terrible job (and even admitted it). He cut my hair like he was still in barber school!!! I have never had to write a yelp review in my life but this experience was beyond terrible and I had to share it. I recommend Sparties barbershop on Albert Ave, most of the good barbers that used to be at Grand River cut there, it's cheaper and easier to park!! I have an issue with this shop. First off, it was extremely dirty. My wife refused to even use the restroom. Looked like it was not sanatised for a few weeks. For personal health concerns when taking my children into an professional facility expecting professional environment I guess I excpect much more. I seen no fire extinguisher for safety. No usable by law sanitizers. A female was working who is only a cosmetologist (and I know this because I personally asked her) and per law's. She can not work in a shop like that due to licensing. At least 4 barbers are NOT lisenced and work their daily. Extremely disappointed and don't feel they should represent a school like Michigan State University on campus. Not sure why this shop is even allowed to continue business and taking young colleges kids money. read more

What a horrible place, called on Thurs, spoke to some woman, didn't get her name, needed haircuts and beard trims for two men, told to be there at 3:30 on Sat, walk in would take immediately, I had said I didn't want to wait for hours, would a different day be better, she said no, "I am doing you a favor". Got there, waited, no one said anything, one guy passed through and said hello, but then finished his haircut and walked around. Lobby had 3 people waiting, both had been there 1.5 to 2 hours. Clearly not interested in doing business. Will not be returning. I recommend you avoid this place. There are others actually interested in cutting hair. read more

This place is a joke. Barbers will cancel appointments on the same day at the last minute not considering that clients have other stuff to do and they don't seem to value their clients at all. I advise you to find another place to cut your hair because there's definitely better places. Don't waste your time thinking they're the best around town because there are better places. I'm a woman with a very short haircut (aka, a mohawk). I can't really afford high-end salon prices but refuse to go to a great clips type place. When I had longer hair I went to the Aveda institute, but the girls there don't really learn clipper technique so I was wary about going there to get the sides of my head shaved. I decided to try a barber shop. I was a little nervous about this initially because I thought they might turn me away for not being a dude or something. Quite the contrary. Everyone at GRBC is very nice and helpful and never treated me differently in any way. Wayne cut my hair first and did a fantastic job. Zach did it the second time and did a spectacular fade, though I had a small problem with the mohawk itself that I didn't notice until almost 2 hours later. I called and asked if I could come back in and have it fixed and there was no problem with this whatsoever. I really appreciated that. Highly recommend this place to women with short/men's style haircuts. Just make sure to make an appointment if you're short on time, you'll usually have to wait 45-60 minutes for a walk-in! read more

What I find refreshing is that each barber, here, is skilled at listening. My barber happened to be Jesse. He was able to put me at ease, listened to what I wanted, and made straightforward recommendations as to what would look best on me. Great haircut shop cool place to hang out a little pricey but you get your money's worth come here you won't regret it

First and foremost the guys that work here are artists. I've never consistently gotten haircuts that I love until I started going here. It may take some time to get a fresh cut if you don't have an appointment but I guarantee it's worth the wait. Aside from that the barber shop is clean professional and a welcoming place. The barbers always remember who you are and the last conversation you had with them, letting you know that they care about their customers. I booked my appointment with Zach Shumacker and was quite excited. Being that I heard great things about this place from my friends at Michigan State University. I booked a number 2, which is head and face service; I asked for a fade down my head that then goes into my beard. Sadly, Zach had other plans, I did not get a fade nor the fade into the beard. He cut the connecting facial hair that connects my mustache and beard which I STILL wanted. Then, i felt him touching my eyebrows. In my head, I tried to think the best of him and hope he was not messing me up. This haircut took 1 hour and 30 minutes; he continuously would stop cutting my hair to listen to the gossip spewing from the other barbers. He gets Very distracted and his heart is not in this trade. I will never go back to Zach Shumacker and i highly advise any of you to not go to him as well. Im going to give this place another chance with a different barber and hopefully all goes well. This was the worst haircut I have ever gotten. Shame on the owner for allowing such amateurs to work with real professionals. read more
