I moved from the Grand Rapids area several years ago. I am now about 200 miles away from this office. In the new location, I had gone to a new retinal specialist. She commented on what an excellent job my IOL replacement was. When she was out on leave, another retinal specialist took her place and he too, commented on what an excellent job on my IOL lens. Both doctors asked who had done the replacement. Thank you Dr. Weber. This makes 3 separate retinal specialists (see previous review), who have commented on the excellent job on my IOL replacement. Yes, at times I have had to wait and I have returned to this office several times since the move, but Dr. Weber is worth the wait. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I do not recommend going to this place at all!!!! Got my eyes dilated and the Dr was supposed to take measurements. all she did was shine a light in my eyes look side to side and look at the letters, I couldn't even see the letters on the screen and she said I had 20/20 Vision and my eyes looked healthy. Mind you I wear glasses and have a stigmatism. Once I was told I was all set I didn't even receive a pair of shades for the sun since I had my eyes dialed. Don't take an 8am appointment and expect to be seen anytime soon. Arrived at 8:05 for an 8 am appointment terrified I was late, turns out the doctor wasn't even in the building until 8:55. The only reason I'm not giving one star is the initial consultant was fabulous, she was friendly and chatted with me and made sure I was set up in my room. The doc on the other hand rolled in and saw me for all of 5 minutes and I'm assuming he came straight from the gym because his hands fogged up the lenses while he was checking my script so now I'm not even sure my prescription is right. $50 later and I felt like I was someone's afterthought. read more

I went here for diabetic eye exam. Here is the process that was performed. 1) Put eyedrops in my eyes to numb them 2) Poked my eyes with a pen like object I don't think anyone should be poking eyes, I now have blurry vision! Brought my mom to the beltline office on 2/11/2020 and we seen Dr. Morehouse. I called GRO to make an appointment for my mom who was seeking a second opinion. I specifically asked when making the appointment for a Doctor that specializes in glaucoma and cornea and that had calm bed side manner with patience because my mom struggles at times with eye watering and light sensitivity hence the reason for the appointment. These issues do make eye appointments difficult, but again that's why we were there. Unfortunately on the day of the appt my moms eyes were very sensitive and draining a ton. Dr. Morehouse quickly became irritated with my mom and her inability to open her eyes. He aggressively wiped away the water and kept snapping at her to open her eyes and sit forward. While I understand how frustrating it would be to try and complete an exam on someone who's not opening their eyes the next part of this makes me very angry. Dr. M was trying to open my moms eyes with his fingers. During this she sat back somewhat suddenly and was quickly snapped at to sit forward. My mom told him that there was something sharp on his finger that poked her eye and it hurt. NOT AN APOLOGY CAM OUT OF HIS MOUTH instead he says" yea that was my finger nail. I'm trying to open your eyes!" He then continues on rambles some stuff to the nurse. He steps back doesnt say what's going on with anything and says that's he is going to refer my mom to another dr in the office that specializes with the surgery that shes had. And then asks if we have any questions which he has no answers to anyways. So completely a waste of time. We then go to check out, make our next appointment with the next dr just to get out to the parking lot to realize they had scheduled us again with Dr M. Terrible experience all around and hoping that the next doctor is a better experience. read more

If I could I would give this no stars at all. I am my grandmas only means on transporting back and forth for her appointments since she has glaucoma in both eyes and is unable to drive. I made sure her appointment today, December 17th, 2018, was four hours before I would have to go to work. Giving us enough time for her to be seen and go home. Her appointment was at 3:00 pm. And I was running ahead of schedule at brought her at 2:30 pm, it is now 5:10 pm and we still haven't been seen by her ACTUAL doctor. One of the techs or assistants had told us there were still three other patients ahead of her. You would think it'd be customary to notify their patients if wait times would be longer than usual. Or if they made a mistake and overbooked appointments for this date. Honestly it is VERY ridiculous with how this place works, we've seen patients who have come in after we had and leave before we were able to! If I could choose, I would NEVER choose this company in my ENTIRE life. Not for my grandmother, not for my children, and not for myself. Be more considerate for the times of others. I work at a four diamond restaurant and if we were to overbook or if we made an error, we notify the guests. Not let them wait for a table for two hours. Thanks. read more

Wasn't told about the unbelievable 3 week wait for my new glasses until after I paid. Now, 3 1/2 weeks later, Still no glasses. Was told (once again) that this is all the fault of their "new" lab. If I would have known (they should be embarrassed) I NEVER would have given them my business. Now, I "might" get my glasses by the 4 week date of 4/4 (glasses ordered 3/7) I will never go back. Grand Rapids Opthalmology, BlueSkyVision, SeeItClear, and whatever business names they utilize is a mediocre practice at best. Having submitted to the LASIK procedure over a decade ago (with Dr. C) I advised other family members to forgone that procedure based on reversion of my near-sightedness to pre-surgery values within two years. Although the doctor offered to repeat the surgery (charging me $$ again), it wasn't worth the risk of worsening the presbyopia that the surgery induced. I also felt (as some other reviews have stated) that detrimental effects of the surgery hadn't been well explained prior to surgery. However, I felt GRO was safe enough for my family to receive general optometrist services so we have been customers for many years. This was primarily because a decade ago it seemed they were the largest practice, with a near monopoly on the GR market at the time. As another low rating Reviewer notes they do utilize Optometrists (not MD Opthalmologists) for most, if not all, optometry services. And yes, they will likely arrive in their white coats and not inform you of that unless you ask! Recently, as my vision and eyes have aged I've been extremely pleased to see University affiliated practices opening branches at nearby hospitals. Also, family member visits during the past two years have underscored that this is not a patient-focused practice, just try to get them to provide you a copy of an itemized billing statement when you check-out and pay. Also, my family has found the eyeglasses business here to be one of the most expensive we have ever used. We are now switching to one of what we feel is the higher quality practices in the area. I'm unsure why there aren't more critical reviews of this practice (perhaps they attempt to remove or rebut them - another sign of a shoddy business IMO), however, that is fine with my family as it leave more openings at the higher quality Opthalmology practices now in the area!! read more

Great service. Did not wait more than 5 minutes once I arrived for the appointment. The staff was friendly and accomodating. Dr. Baumgartner was courteous and very helpful with all the questions I had. Overall, a very good experience and a convenient location (off the highway, on the beltline). I just learned that I haven't seen an ophthalmologist in years despite having been to Grand Rapids OPHTHALMOLOGY twice in the past 3 years. This practice is passing off optometrists as Opthalmologists. It is fraudulent and the public should know what they are doing. read more

He is a very caring person and quick to diagnose vision problems and suggest appropriate treatment. I was recommended to this place to get my LASIK done here by some of my coworkers. I ended up getting my procedure done by dr. Cowden who was awesome... However the wait time to be seen is always an hour at minimum just to see the doctor. Even for my post op appointments, which only take 5 minutes it would take me an hr to even see him which is ridiculous! I would give more stars for how great the dr. Is however due to the wait times I would say go to the walker office or somewhere else to get your eyes checked read more

Due to my wife's eye problems we have seen 3 different eye specialists in the last 3 months, including the U of M. Grand Rapids Opthomology is the best. They were prompt and Dr. Muallem was thorough and explained things clearly. My wife is confined to a wheelchair and they were very accommodating. read more

Went to this location to look for new eyeglasses. I did not have to wait long. Then Ben (the optician) was very helpful, and I found new glasses quickly and with little fuss. Ben even went out of his way, and above and beyond the call of duty, to make temporary repairs to my old, damaged eyeglasses so that I have something to wear in the meantime. read more

We found another ophalmalogist who, SURPRISE!, was able to fit us in he following week. A stunning lack of respect for my family and our patronage. To start they initially able to get me in and start me on steroids for the dry that experience for my masks from working in the hospital. After about over a year on eyedrops which puts patients at higher risk for glaucoma I switched eye doctors. My new eye doctor fix my problem in less than a month that easily could've been fixed for 10 less appointments. Sadly I had bought glasses from them already and when I went to bring my glasses in to have the lenses swapped they broke the glasses. Although, my eye doctor was nice... she never fixed underline problem and I wasted way too much money and time here. Now I have one broken pair of glasses and tons of bills looking back that never fixed anything. Do not recommend. read more

BEWARE of how they are scheduling their appointments and their billing practices. Called to schedule a vision check appointment under our vision insurance (copay of $15), but it was scheduled as a medical appointment resulting in a $152 bill. Have been speaking to billing since end of April with a total of 7 phone calls never returned by the manager and director. Today I get a notice threatening to send me to collections. After 7 years, we will be finding a new place. read more

They took extremely good care of me. I had to have a depth of vision test and then have my eye pressure evaluated. Someone had made a mistake and one appointment was at noon and the next appointment was at 2:05. But they worked me in and everything went smoothly. Everyone there is friendly and efficient. I haven't had any problems that I remember with this company. I got lasik done and it was great. BUT my first weird experience was that after the lasik, I was scheduled a follow up appointment... THEY schedule You....I show up and the doctor didn't know what I was doing there... well you tell me. What. So they scheduled me again. Just tried to make an appointment to be evaluated for the lens replacement surgery. I was transferred 4 different times each time telling me I had the wrong department. Finally ended in a transfer to leave a message. Very frustrating for what seems like should be an easy request. Great doctors terrible office management. As other have noted, poor scheduling organization leading to long wait times. But it was the attitude as well. One time it took almost a half hour just to hand someone paperwork on the way out and I didn't owe anything on it. It's like these terrific doctors are not served by the awful customer service. The doctor did a great job in 1999 with my LASIK and that was with older tech. I tried going back once for something a few years ago and the office still sucked and I haven't been back since. I have a nice, small, single-doctor office that I go to now for exams. My results were much better than the doctor expected due to my starting off point. Again, great doctors, bad office. read more

Had cataract surgery with Dr Muallem 2 years ago. I was one of the unlucky people whose membrane thickened afterwards making it as difficult to see clearly as before surgery. I thought it was my glasses or just me being ultra picky about my eyesight. Dr Weatherhead diagnosed my problem, which Dr Muallem confirmed. I had the YAG laser surgery on both eyes. Dr Muallem was extremely kind in fitting me into his surgery schedule so that I could go on a long term trip as planned. He is very kind, compassionate and a great surgeon. read more

Connie Benigni Anderson (under the supervision of Dr. Evelyn Vanderveen) permanently injured my face with a laser. I met with Dr. Vanderveen to discuss the damage. However, she was confrontational and refused to examine the injury. The Dermatology Center, Mrs. Anderson and Dr. Vanderveen then sent me a letter saying that they would no longer provide me with medical care. I was horrified. I trusted them and they left me injured and without care. I finally went to the Mayo Clinic for help. The doctor at the Mayo Clinic confirmed and documented the damage to my face. I will never be the same again. read more

One of the worst experiences I have ever encountered when buying glasses.... waited 6 weeks for lenses to come in.. went to pick up new glasses only to be told that the frames were not in. Waited 2 more weeks for frames and asked for a refund. They offered me to take a temporary frame from stock and would replace when new frame came in. I agree. Waited 3 more weeks for the frame to come in. Went to pick up frame today only to be told the frame was in but it was the wrong size and would have to be re-ordered. I got a refund. I have lived in numerous cities around the country and been to a lot of different medical providers. I can comfortably say that there is no worse customer service experience than at Grand Rapids ophthalmology. It's almost as if they have designed the place to make sure that at every point of contact you are treated with utter rudeness. Their clear attitude is that they're doing you a favor by having you as a patient and that you should be grateful for whatever time they give you. I've been yelled at,snarled at, and been on the receiving end of some of the most inappropriate passive aggressive behavior I've experienced at a medical provider.
