After a day of hard work out on the field, I was in the mood for Chinese food and wanting to try a bit of everything buffet style just made sense. This was the only one in town so we came in around 7:30pm as they close at 9:30pm which would allow us 2 hours if we needed it. As soon as we walked in one of the employee's asked for the size of our party and seated us promptly along with what we would like for drinks. A variety of soda to pick from but we stuck with water. From there we made our way to the corner which is where they had all their items. In the center is their chinese food where you can find fried rice, chow mein, orange chicken etc. etc. There were a couple dishes which I haven't heard of before so it was only natural to try it out. A coconut chicken is what I picked up and it just wasn't my thing so that was on the plate when I left to get a new plate. The fried rice was probably my favorite (bias because I really wanted rice) Along with the Orange Chicken. Other than that everything else was what you would expect. On the wall side there was actually some american food such as Ribs and Fried Chicken. To the very corner there was also a small assortment of desserts like cake along with ice cream adjacent to it. Food wise would be a 3 but giving the extra 4th for the quick service and kind hospitality. It was very cute around 8:30pm they take over a long table and the cooks bring out specific containers freshly made so that the staff can all eat dinner together and or when they could. They left our bill at the table and just waited for them to finish up so they weren't rushed. read more

We were happy to find Grand China open relatively late.... for Alpena. Of course, it does not have the selection of restaurants in big cities, but my vegan nephew and I both enjoyed healthy vegetables and standard Chinese fare. I think that it just might be the best Chinese restaurant in Alpena. read more

The food was amazing. The booth seats are hard and and the back was going to fall off if I leaned on it. After the guy at the front counter ran our card, there was no "have a goodnight" or "thank you". He proceeded to play angry birds on his phone without a glance. Then to top it all off, there were human feces smeared in the men's room wall and mold growing in the grout around the sink. Never going back and left a voicemail with the health department. I've been going here for 10+ years and have never had any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. The food is pretty decent, it fills you up the way you'd expect it to. I appreciate the fact that there is a do it yourself takeout option where they weigh your tray by weight. You can even order regular takeout from here! It's a great place to go if you're hungry and don't wanna break the bank. All of the workers are kind, and do their absolute best to operate in a community that doesn't understand them. Food wasn't good as far as Chinese buffets go, hardly anything was left, was a very low quality place, food supplies being store in pop cooler in front of store, felt like we would have trouble later from eating here, but didn't. Run! Filthy tables, restroom and floor. Food was warm or cold. Management didn't address behaviors of large family. Young children (7-8) were allowed to serve themselves at buffet resulting in dropped plates, food and flatware. Children crawling on floors and allowed to use restroom unsupervised. Horrible experience. Last time I was there the waitress started the experience getting our drinks wrong. Then I found a large bone in my chicken and broccoli dish. The kicker was my ten year old Daughter pulled a piece of shaved metal from her mouth while eating lo mein. When the issue was brought to the waitress she said sorry and walked away. Went in for a quick bite to eat with my fiance. The food was over cooked and under seasoned. We both came in and were immediately told to "just go ahead to the buffet" by the woman working the register. I would give this review a higher rating, but find it impossible to do so with such little care to the buffet itself. The trays were almost empty when we arrived, and upon getting what we could and returning to our seats, somebody came out of the back to add 'fresh' food to the already used trays, wothoit wearing gloves of any sort. The entire place was kinda dirty and just overall a bad idea to have came here. Spent $28.55 for a meal that wasn't worth $19 in my opinion. I've been to several Grand China Buffets. All very similar & decent. Alpena's has less of a selection then others, but it's still good food. My husband loves eating here & usually we do 3-4x per month. I've read others reviews about finding metal in their food. Honestly, I don't believe that. Eating there as often as we have, we've never ever experienced anything like this. As for a chicken bone, big deal, that can happen anywhere. I know I do it often when taking chicken off the bones for soup etc. It's kinda common sense to watch for a small bone or two when eating any chicken dish. Don't dis a restaurant for it. I love the food, but I don't get as grossed out as much people, I had a friend who did pipe repairs in their restaurant, and when they went in the kitchen and pulled their pipes apart there were about 15 to 20 dead rats, and another nest and many other nests of new rats, as I said though, it's not like the rest are crapping in the food, they just need to get an exterminator read more

We have had dinner at Chinese restaurants in 48 of the 50 states and Grand China Buffet is totally up to standard. The food is always tasty and is replenished in small batches so that it does not get old on the buffet. We are regularly returning diners and have not been disappointed. The price is reasonable as well. read more

So unhappy with my experience here! A few items were good, but most of the fish and shrimp dishes were cold, tasteless, and old. The crab is imitation and to top it all off there was a bug in my egg drop soup.... I let a staff member know and they were like I'm sorry but hey you still have to pay full price for your food, they took 3 dollars off..... seriously disgusting..... read more
