I loved my graffiti workshop with Graff Tours! When I booked the workshop through Fever, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it was going to be a tour plus a graffiti class, but it turned out to be just the graffiti class and I didn't hate it! It was supposed to be a class of 6 people, but 2 didn't show, so we had an intimate class with our graffiti artist instructor, Ghost Face Mims. He was a great teacher - provided just enough guidance to get us going, but def allowed us to create our own masterpieces. I only wish he wore a mask during the class since we were indoors. We took the Graff lesson and it was so much fun! There were three couples and we learned the basics of the type of paint to use, the kinds of caps available, and techniques to get thick/thin lines, shading, bubble letters., etc. we then did our own piece of art with help from the instructor. I had heard that Brooklyn has the best street art in New York, so I thought I would do something different and book a street art tour for my friend Christina and I. After reading many reviews, I chose Graff Tours, as they came highly recommended. The tour started in Bushwick, and when we arrived, the area was dead. Like no one around. We thought it was a bit sketchy and maybe we had been ripped off, so we rang the company and they told us the guide was just running a little late. Phew. We turned out to be the only ones on the tour (as a few people did not turn up), so it ended up being a private one hour tour around the industrial area of Brooklyn. It was fantastic. Our guide was awesome - we learnt a lot about the history of the area, the street art and the meaning of each one, the street artists involved and got some great photos! Booked a private tour for my birthday party. The tour was awesome. We were given a historical background of the graffiti movement, as well as an overview of how it spread all over the world. We were taken on a walk of the neighborhood and we stayed withing a 5 or so block radius, we saw a lot of art work, got to learn a lot about different styles and types of street art as well as the understanding of what is considered legal vs illegal and how the two come together and co-exist in an urban environment. We then got a chance to do our own graffiti on canvas that we took home. The area is safe and parking on a Saturday afternoon was easy. This is definitely an activity I will do again. Highly recommend the lesson. They walk you through Spray Paint 101, then let your imagination run as you create a final product on a fairly large piece of canvas. Our instructor let us come up with the ideas and do the bulk of the work, but he added valuable creative input and did some "touch up" work that took our piece to the next level. He had great artistic vision and mastery of the art form. We were pumped up about how our piece turned out, had a lot of fun creating it, learned a lot, and developed a new appreciation for street art. read more

The was an awesome experience for my college students. I teach in a Hip Hop and Social Justice Program at the University of San Francisco. We booked the Bushwick Graffiti Tour and Graffiti Workshop. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and provided a great introduction to many different forms of this street art. We learned about the history, techniques, types of graffiti. We also took the Graffiti Workshop. This workshop provides an introduction to the mechanics of graffiti. After a brief introduction, the students were allowed to practice handling the can making different types of lines with the spray paint. Then the students worked with the local artist to develop a theme for a piece. From there, he worked with them to create their very own group piece. Our daughter was in town from college so we had a week of fun in NYC and the surrounding areas. The street art tour in Brooklyn was a highlight of the week. Our tour guide was engaged, knowledgeable, and passionate. (I can't remember her name now--Janine? it was the Fri 6/18 1 pm tour). I already knew a lot about street art and still learned so much. Irony of a graffiti cleanup truck being parked near the tour route. But I loved every second of the tour. I'm a huge fan of street art and the tour guide goes into a nice detail about the pieces we see. I felt a bit out of place for being the only New Yorker being on the tour but other than that I enjoyed it and the other tourists were nice except for the family from Montreal. I took the street art tour in LA. Coincidentally, it was the day of the Academy Awards and my plan was to set out early because the traffic is even worse on event days. We got there around 10 am and found parking without any trouble. I had bought a ticket for my friend who really likes graffiti. I don't particularly like it, but I enjoyed the tour a lot. It was set in the Arts District in downtown LA. I'm more of a suburban girl, but I have a love for cities and I really liked that area of LA. The murals around that area were really cool and I loved how they have a either a story or some kind of social commentary about them. read more

I joined the tour on the Lower East Side. I loved it!!! Kate and Gabe are excellent guides who really know a lot about graffiti and street art. I saw a lot of great works which I would have missed walking through the streets on my own. The tour has made me more aware of the graffiti and street art scene in NYC.
