Getting stripes on award day is always special
    Angelina M.

Joining Gracie Jiu jitsu Vallejo has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I started and got my combatives belt through the Gracie university online program but coming in person and joining the Women Empowerment program was a game changer! Not only did I learn to be assertive in both my life and jiu jitsu journey but I've gained confidence and literally feel empowered every time I walk through those doors. The atmosphere and energy at the Gracie locations I've been to are always welcoming but in Vallejo, Miro and Nikki are such real and genuine people that have always made us feel like family. They'll always have my gratitude!

I've been training at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Vallejo for 12 years. I started off doing taekwondo in which I received my black belt, and I'm a purple belt in jiu-jitsu and a pink belt in women empowered. The quality of instruction there is exceptional. The instructors are highly skilled, patient and dedicated to ensuring every student understands both the technical and practical aspects of the class. What sets this academy apart from others is the strong sense of community. The students support each other which makes each class very enjoyable. When I started, I was a very quiet person and kept to myself. Training here has not only helped me with defending myself but it has also helped me in using my voice and to be more assertive. The vibe here is amazing, everyone encourages each other and there's always laughter mixed in with the hard work. I've gained not only better self defense skills but also new friends and a huge boost in confidence.

Great place to train! Friendly and clean environment. I'm enrolled in the Gracie Combatives program. The structure of the curriculum keeps you excited to learn street self-defense that is actually applicable vs. any larger or smaller untrained opponent. The class will definitely boost your confidence in your everyday life. Miro is an outstanding coach who truly enjoys teaching all walks of life. If you're looking to learn Gracie Combatives, this is the only Gracie Certified Training Center in the Bay Area and is the place to learn - they also offer your first 10 consecutive classes free and the gi is included for you to use. Bring yourself and a friend or family! You will not be disappointed! See you on the mats! :)

We came across this one and my husband reached out and received a response from Coach Jason right away inviting us to come in for a trial class. My daughter and son were welcomed right away and Coach had the other student introduce themselves and shake hands which immediately relieved the nervousness they were feeling. The class was engaging enough for my preschool aged daughter and 1st grade son to remain enthusiastic and focused(as much as they can be) the entire class. Coach Jason is very kind, and incredibly patient and is an excellent teacher. My son has learning differences/challenges and he never humiliates or alienates him or any of the kids in the class. He teaches them about respecting their parents, their coach, and their training partners. When they aren't able to do a move he is reassuring and empowers them telling them all they need to do is practice. This was especially important and meaningful for my daughter who felt discouraged and sad when she couldn't do a move her first or second class. All of his pre-exiting students are kind to one another and to me that is a reflection of their instructor. Also where else can you find a program that is 3 days a week for 1 hour 15 mins?? My kids look forward to class and are motivated to learn and eventually compete. I highly recommend and am excited to see how my children develop in the art.

I loved that Denise, AJ, and Cheryl really kick your butt to house/Vegas/EDM style music. I also love the boxing class. The place itself does not look fancy but it is what it is = a kick ass place to get your cardio in along with fighting classes for all ages. I think its great they also hold occasional challenges (most fat loss/most weight loss) and have prizes such as free membership for a period of time, etc. I find it very hard to believe that this gym or any other would charge you for 4 months after the fact-- I canceled mine when I moved and did not experience such an issue. I did however buy the 10-pass class for when I do visit my family on the weekends and can get a cardio workout in. I say try it for yourself. There are all kinds/sorts of people here: thick, thin, young, older, beginners, novice, expert. You'll fit in no matter what shape you are in.

I love this place, they have a two way approach of teaching where they offer both group and one on one classes (to refine techniques and work through any technical issues). The teachers are young, relatable and very attentive. Their teaching style is very kid friendly and if they see something that's not quite clicking they find other ways to explain it so that its more relatable and or make more sense to as why something is done a certain way (not just seeing the trees but the forest as well.) Also after every one on one class the teacher goes over your child's progress and what they see as their strengths as well as the things that can be worked on and improved. The staff is consistent (not a lot of change over) so it's make things much easier as far as getting into a routine for the kids as well as the parents. My kid has been there for a little of a year (started when they were 8 but now they're 9) and has had the same three instructors - Mr. Bilberry, Mr. Begonia and Ms. Ferdin (which is a plus in my book.) They are taught practical applications for real world situations. They are also big on conditioning and friendly competition to help with pushing them further. There's alway a nice group of kids attending the group classes which is one of the reasons why my kid loves going (we use this as part of their social time since they are being home schooled.) The dojo is always well kept and organized (it doesn't have that funky smell that you'd think a gym would have which means a lot when you're waiting during your child's practices.) There's also a great cafe (the Benicia Coffee Company) a few doors down if you prefer to wait off site in the area. The Coachs are really good and are very knowledgeable. Even though I had and idea of their skill levels I really found out after witnessing one of their open houses where the instructors did a demonstration of their fighting style Kenpo Karate! With this particular style they use a color belt system to mark accomplishment and skill level. What's really cool is if you're feeling left out and are in need of a workout they have a boxing gym as well that offers lessons that you can match to your kid's schedule! If you're looking for a martial arts spot I'd highly recommend this place and they even offer a few free lessons to give you a chance to see if it's the right fit for you and your child! It's a win win situation in my book! J

Fast forward to four years later and I discovered that Soaring Eagles offers classes through our home school charter, so I called to express my interest and set up a visit. When I called, I spoke to Master Wayne Jones. I could tell right away that he is very business oriented, but friendly. He invited us to come to the dojang to watch a few classes to help us decide if this would be the place for us. At first, I had trouble finding the parking lot since Google Maps will tell you to turn right instead of making a slight right down the one way street behind the building. When I finally did park and enter the dojang, we were greeted with wide smiles and invited to sit anywhere to watch a class. There were two main classes at the time, one in the front room for children 7-12 and one in a back room for children 3-6. Miss Aliah teaches the Little Eagles with the assistance of various Black Belts. She is a natural with the kids. She gets down to their level, explains the moves and kicks in a way that children can easily understand and most importantly, she is patient but stern. Kids will sometimes get out of sort, but she maintains a level of order and discipline. The kids know very well when it is play time and when it is learning time. The Basic Children's class for 7-12 year olds was being taught by Master Wayne and Mr. Boone, a fellow Black Belt. I was impressed that even though the class had well over 20 kids, they were able to make sure that everyone lined up correctly, uniforms were neat and belts were tired. Master Jones has a loud powerful voice that commands attention and he is also firm yet compassionate with his instruction. The school is run by Master Wayne Jones and his wife Mrs Master Adrienne (6th Dan), along with the assistance of their daughters Ms. Aiesha (4th Dan), Ms. Aliah (3rd Dan), and fellow Black Belt Mr. Boone (4th Dan). I was highly impressed that their entire family consists of black belts as this is exactly what I want for my children. Not only are all the children black belts, but so are the grandchildren. This is truly impressive! There are many class times to chose from during the week and you can have an A/B schedule where you come every other day, two days a week. Classes run from 4:45-8pm (the late night class is the adult class from 7:15-8 am). They also offer different levels of membership which includes the Black Belt Club-( 2 regular classes and one specialty class a week that usually includes weapons and sparring training) and Master's Club- (Attend as many classes you want in a week, including a specialty weapons class on Thursday night; and targeted weapons training on Saturday consisting of bo staff, nunchuks, escrimas stick, forms (Taegeuk), tricks and kicks and combat weapons). You will also have an opportunities to compete in tournaments, even one hosted by the dojang on Mare Island in the Spring. The tournaments are a good way to test your skills and see taekwondo applied in real life applications. I also appreciate that you don't just learn taekwondo. We learn hapkkido, jiu jitsu, self defense and how to fall properly. If you take Def Con with Master Adrienne, you will learn how to stretch and strengthen your body in ways you never knew you could. In Ms. Aliah's trick and kicks class, I have learned some kicks that aren't just impressive, but also useful in sparring. In Ms. Aiesha's sparring class, you train with the best of the best and learn how to hone your craft. You also learn about community. I have had so many people show up and support me through different events and I have in turn shown up and supported others. This is what a true community represents. Something else that impressed me about Soaring Eagles is the diversity in the dojang. Many cultures, ethnicities and faiths were represented in the different familes and everyone had a mutual respect for one another. I was sold. Now over a year later, my second oldest is a blue stripe belt, my oldest is a soon to be green belt, my husband is a soon to be yellow belt and I am a green belt with black belt aspirations!! We all decided to join the fun! I truly appreciate the village I have found. Mrs. Master Jones, Master Jones, Ms. Aiesha, Ms. Aliah, Ms. Javina and the entire dojang have been so welcoming and supportive. I am forever loyal to Soaring Eagles and they won't be able to get rid of me!
