My son has been training here for over 4 years. He has learned conflict resolution, short term goal planning and achievement, long term goal planning and achievement, being a resilient individual as well as how to be a good teammate and learn that your teammates will lift you up. The owners and staff are very personable, available, and professional. We know exactly what's going on before when we get there each day, week, and month. The gym has a great culture and if you are willing to invest your time and effort you will get it back 10fold. This gym has all of the positives of a competitive fight gym and the community aspects of a small business that has the pulse of the community at its forefront. At GB Upland every one seems to be pulling the rope in the same direction.

Our son started BJJ in January of this year initially he loved it and was excited for every class then the repetitiveness of doing the same thing weekly bored him. We still made the effort to take him every week even tho he did not want to participate. After struggling with him not wanting to go we decided to maybe give him a break see if the interest would return after a short break....we were told we needed to give 30 days notice for the break so I had to pay the full month in advance. I said fine so we did..then we decided to take a longer break so we emailed them again to cancel membership.. was told we needed 60 days to cancel and we would still need to pay those months....so I'm pretty much paying over $400 to cancel a membership that's not even in use....we had planned to return and bring our youngest son in the future but after this shady tactic of having to pay months to get out of a membership we will never be returning now.

I don't always leave reviews but I felt it was necessary for GB Upland. This Jiu-Jitsu school is one of the best we've seen and we actually transferred from a different location and drive a distance cause we believe in how this school is operated. My wife and I own our own business so we appreciate how the owners run their's. The coaches are phenomenal and really care about the students. My son has come a long way training here and he even inspired me to continue my training! We look forward to many years training and getting better at Gracie Barra Upland. Highly Recommended!

The head Professor at the Rancho Cucamonga location is the best. He knows how to talk to kids, and doesn't single any of them out. All of the professors here are awesome. It's smaller than the upland location, but more intimate and my son loves it!

Professors Ana & Rafael have created a quality family/team environment where everyone from the staff to seasoned students are approachable and willing to help you with your technique & goals. Whether you're a hobbyist, competitor or just looking to have fun and a great workout, the GB curriculum covers every level and speed. Owners and staff strive to raise the standard for professionalism, conduct & etiquette, ensuring everyone feels comfortable in a challenging & rewarding environment. Issues/concerns are addressed without delay. The kids & teens program is second-to-none, producing consistent medalists in every major tournament --locally, nationally and even internationally. If you have a competitive child looking to develop, improve and fine-tune their game; Iron sharpens iron at GB Upland. My daughters have greatly benefited from the team support. The front office is easy to reach out to whenever life/school etc., happens and extracurricular priorities change. They've accommodated my child's occasional breaks a couple times with complete understanding. Shoutout to Pedro for making the membership/contractual process painless & concise. Can't recommend GB Upland enough!

Both of my kids and husband train here. They have their classes separated between 2-6 (little kids) 7-14 (Juniors &Teens). There are lots of open mat times and various times for adults throughout the week. Both of the head professors Ana and Rafael are amazing. They are so great with working with kids of all levels. The fact that they are champions are a bonus+. This has helped my kids learn so much a they love coming. I would highly recommend trying it out. They also have rentals for first time people. This way you can try it and see before you commit. The rental is only $10. This has helped both of my kids understand sportsmanship, discipline and how to focus and apply them selves. It has helped increase their self confidence and become better leaders. I can't say enough about how much I love this studio

I Only need 3 minutes of your time. Since I started Gracie Barra class in June 2018. I was at 187 to 190 lbs over weight. At 5'7"height and very close to giving up on life. I just went though some traumatic family situations. That I don't want to discuss right now. Day one since I started classes. Everyone there was very welcoming. Yes I am new to this and I had know idea what to expect on my first day. So I took the fundamental classes and have been picking up some skills. Every time I go everyone there are very welcoming. Even if the person doesn't know who you are they will still go out of their way just to say hi. Once you settle in it feels like you just joined the best family you've been missing out on. These coaches here are amazing. They helped me each time I go train. Even if it's something small they try their best to make sure you understand what's going on. Since I've started jujitsu. I started working on myself. I needed to find myself first before I commitment to GB. So I gave up bad eating habits, and started eating healthy. Wow only after a few months I changed my life around. It wasn't easy. Nothing really ever is. But I know that GB saved me. So if you read this and your going though some tuff times in your life. These coaches are here to help you, us and definitely myself. Do let life get to you. Just change it for a better tomorrow. Life is amazing if someone shows you a different route. The first thing you need to do is just show up. Take your frustrations out on the mat. Trust me on this. GB has changed my life for good. So I'll hope to see you in class. To Byron my friend bless your soul for showing me this life. Thank you for being a friend in time of need.

The classes are full enough that there's always a partner for everybody but small enough that every student gets some individual attention. It's very basic, standardized, and repeated year-round. This appears intentional. Regular classes teach only the minimum, while techniques outside the posted curriculum are pushed into paid private lessons. Because of this, most students are trained as hobbyists. Extra instruction or advanced opportunities often depend on personal relationships rather than a structured development path. The curriculum is designed for retention, not depth, and this model is consistent across Gracie Barra schools. The gap becomes clear when students compete or train outside the Gracie Barra environment. While internal GB tournaments create an even playing field, they can give a false sense of progress. When students compete outside of GB or train at another academy against the same rank the difference in technical depth, adaptability, and exposure is often very noticeable. Even the instructors don't train the same curriculum as regular students, which speaks to how limited it is. Compared to other academies that teach more as part of regular training (without extra fees), this approach leaves students less prepared overall.

I emailed Jamar for a trial run and he set up an appointment for me. I will break this review down into a few sections. Head Instructor: Jamar adapts to each individual and motivates them according to their personality. He is one of the finest and most professional individuals I have ever had the pleasure to work with. He takes MMA very seriously and passionately. He cares about his students on and off the mat has made positive impacts on many people's lives, me included. He runs his business with integrity and honesty even if it means not making as much money as he could. He is upfront and honest with his students whether it's promotion or not being a good fit for the gym. He puts his students first and truly believes that his team is his family. Parking and facility: There are plenty of parking spaces. Facility is spacious with two restrooms. Got a few changing rooms to change in between classes from Muay Thai to Jiu Jitsu. Got a staging area for your gear and cameras all over the gym so you do not have to worry about your stuff going missing. Jamar offers refrigeration in case you have protein or drinks you want to keep chilled. Plenty of weights and workout equipment in case you are injured and cannot participate in sparring or rolling.I recently tweaked my ribs and while others rolled after lessons I just worked out at the side. Jamar cleans the gym after each use after the morning session as well as the night session. Environment/hours/schedule: UCS is one of the friendliest places I have ever been to. Unlike some of the other gyms out there, the students and instructors are not out to impress anyone. What I mean by that is no one is going to beat you up just to show you how cool they are. In fact Jamar is very big on being respectful and frowns upon being a mat bully. Hours of the gym are very accommodating. However accommodating Jamar is he does not tolerate being late, it's part of being respectful to other students! Muay Thai/Jiu Jitsu: As far as I know, this gym is one of the only gyms that still offers Muay Thai around the area. There is no "beginner's class" as everyone learns in a big group setting. This goes for both Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu as well. Jamar has a keen eye for each individual's skill level and pairs you up with people that can teach and guide you. Each session starts with warm up following up with a lesson plan for the week and ends with light contact sparring. Safety is very important at UCS as it should be at any MMA gym. Jamar has a no nonsense policy when it comes to the hygiene and safety of his students. With that being said you will get punched/kicked in the face and body, but it's something you will be able to tolerate. I mean after all you are coming to learn a combat sport. This is a Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu and they teach both Gi and No Gi Jiu Jitsu. One of the reasons why I love this gym is because it is a very balanced gym. Jamar encourages his students to learn both and be well versed in both. At first I was super lost as to what I'm supposed to do but from the short months I have been here I feel like I have improved significantly. Everyone here is very patient and welcoming and I never felt pressured to practice any moves I'm not comfortable with. One of the earliest lessons I have learned from Jamar is tapping early and not pushing myself because I do not know what I am doing yet. As far as promotions, go there isn't a test so you do not have to worry about paying extra to advance. Overall, I cannot recommend this place enough. I have made many valuable friendships that I know will last a lifetime. you will just have to come and check it out. Reach out to Jamar about trial class and begin your journey, you will not regret it, OSS!!!
