I'm writing this review not to be negative or cause problems but because I hope it creates some kind of change. I trained at GB Upland for about four years. I was consistent, sometimes training twice a day, and I competed around 7 times, always placing gold or silver. I trained through injuries, balanced family life, and showed up ready to help others on and off the mat. I gave a lot to this place. What really pushed me to leave was a comment from Professor Ana. She told me, "I don't really see you at class that often." That hit me hard, because I knew how much time I'd put in. I plan to post my attendance card and medals not to brag but to show that I was showing up, even on days I was hurting. That comment made me step back and look at things more clearly. Over time, I started noticing a lot of favoritism. Certain families especially those who are friends with the owners or have kids that compete get more attention, more praise, and more support. I understand why competitors are highlighted. They represent the gym. But let's be honest the people who pay monthly, train consistently, and support the academy from the ground up deserve just as much respect. If you use words like "we," "family," or "community," that should apply to everybody not just a few. I also heard stories from people especially at CompNet tournaments who didn't have a coach in their corner when it was time to compete. Some had to wait. Others had no one. That's rough, especially when you're out there nervous and relying on your school to back you up. And it wasn't just adults. In the kids' classes too, who gets more attention often depends on how involved their parents are with the school not just how hard the kid trains. When you see it enough, it starts to feel off. Injuries are expected in this sport I've had two or three myself. But I'm always upfront about them. I let the professor or coach know before class, and I let my partner know too. I want to protect myself and others. But not everyone trains like that. There are some people who roll with ego and try to prove something every time and they end up injuring other students. I know at least one person who hurt multiple people and is still there. I'm not naming names, but in my opinion, one person shouldn't be allowed to ruin the experience for so many. Another thing that started bothering me was the 60-day cancellation policy. After doing some research and talking with people from other schools including other Gracie Barra locations I found that most have a 30-day policy, no contracts, and more flexible options. For people who are dealing with financial stress or personal issues, being forced to pay for two extra months feels like it's about money, not community. Then there's the issue of people with prior martial arts experience competing in lower-level brackets. I'm not hating on anyone's success. Like I said, I've competed and done well. But when someone barely trains at the gym, walks into a competition with a big advantage, and then gets praised like they just climbed Mount Everest it's hard to watch. I stayed quiet about it for a long time, but it didn't sit right with me. I've always earned everything whether in the Army or in Jiu Jitsu through effort and integrity. I want to be part of a gym where that kind of value actually means something. Since leaving, several people have reached out to me privately, saying they've felt the same way but didn't want to speak up. I've also run into former students who said they stopped going for the same reasons. The feelings I had weren't just mine. Leaving wasn't easy. I made a lot of good friends. I had a routine. I still love the sport. And to be fair, the coaches themselves are very knowledgeable and talented. That was one of the best parts of being there. They made training enjoyable and challenging. This review isn't an attack it's just my truth. At the end of the day, for my own mental well-being, I needed to go somewhere I'd feel genuinely valued not just as a student, but as a person. I can't believe their cancellation policy. Most other Gracie Barra locations require 30 days notice, but this one requires 60 days. This is a money grab. It's so shady. They don't tell you up front either. But apparently it's in the contract. And they did not provide a copy of the contract. So I guess I should have taken the time to read it line for line. He has learned conflict resolution, short term goal planning and achievement, long term goal planning and achievement, being a resilient individual as well as how to be a good teammate and learn that your teammates will lift you up. The owners and staff are very personable, available, and professional. We know exactly what's going on before when we get there each day, week, and month. The gym has a great culture and if you are willing to invest your time and effort you will get it back 10fold. Our son started BJJ in January of this year initially he loved it and was excited for every class then the repetitiveness of doing the same thing weekly bored him. We still made the effort to take him every week even tho he did not want to participate. After struggling with him not wanting to go we decided to maybe give him a break see if the interest would return after a short break....we were told we needed to give 30 days notice for the break so I had to pay the full month in advance. I said fine so we did..then we decided to take a longer break so we emailed them again to cancel membership.. was told we needed 60 days to cancel and we would still need to pay those months....so I'm pretty much paying over $400 to cancel a membership that's not even in use....we had planned to return and bring our youngest son in the future but after this shady tactic of having to pay months to get out of a membership we will never be returning now. read more

Both of my kids and husband train here. They have their classes separated between 2-6 (little kids) 7-14 (Juniors &Teens). There are lots of open mat times and various times for adults throughout the week. Both of the head professors Ana and Rafael are amazing. They are so great with working with kids of all levels. The fact that they are champions are a bonus+. This has helped my kids learn so much a they love coming. I would highly recommend trying it out. They also have rentals for first time people. I Only need 3 minutes of your time. Since I started Gracie Barra class in June 2018. I was at 187 to 190 lbs over weight. At 5'7"height and very close to giving up on life. I just went though some traumatic family situations. That I don't want to discuss right now. Day one since I started classes. Everyone there was very welcoming. Yes I am new to this and I had know idea what to expect on my first day. So I took the fundamental classes and have been picking up some skills. Every time I go everyone there are very welcoming. Even if the person doesn't know who you are they will still go out of their way just to say hi. Once you settle in it feels like you just joined the best family you've been missing out on. These coaches here are amazing. They helped me each time I go train. Even if it's something small they try their best to make sure you understand what's going on. Since I've started jujitsu. I started working on myself. I needed to find myself first before I commitment to GB. So I gave up bad eating habits, and started eating healthy. Wow only after a few months I changed my life around. I have been involved in BJJ and MMA for over 25 years. I take my 8 year old here and could not be happier with the education she is getting. There are lots of kids for her to train and be friends with and the coaches are fantastic. They are good at explaining technical details and in making it a fun experience. The owner is a World Class Black Belt and she runs a great business. The gym is always clean and the kids are taught BJJ history and etiquette as part of their lessons. I started jiu jitsu at another school back in 2018 but a few months later I moved 50 miles which, with LA traffic, would have taken me 4,567 hours to get to. So I explored, researched, investigated, called, sniffed, tasted, Google mapped, and further examined every school within driving distance to my new abode. I even took a a few trial classes to see if anyone smelled funny at any of the schools. Ultimately I ended up at Gracie Barra Upland for a trial class, not for me, but for my 4 year old son. I watched him smile for the next hour as the coaches engaged, educated, and entertained the kids while they taught the class. At the end of the class my son walked over to me and said, "Daddy, this is the best place ever. Can I come every day?" I said, "Of course, just get a job and pay for your own classes!" Unfortunately for me he refused then used the techniques he'd learned that day to take me down and remove my credit card which he then used to sign up. I still hadn't made a decision on where I'd start training so my son made it for me. "Daddy, we HAVE to go to the same school." Admittedly, my son is wiser than I am so I acquiesced and here we are a year later, part of the GB Upland family. My son and I are both on the verge of leaving our white belts behind and moving on to gray/white and blue belts. Not sure which one I'll get, but either way it's an accomplishment! Our experience with the classes, the professors, the coaches, and the other students has been unbelievably rewarding. Professors Ana & Rafael are warm, welcoming, and super friendly, making everyone feel like they're at home. The other coaches are patient and amazing instructors, making the process of learning a complicated martial art fun, clear, and easy to grasp. BJJ's strength is in the ground game, with holds, sweeps, chokes, arm bars, triangles, etc. TKD involves kicking and works well when you are standing. i love Jui Jitsu it's a great workout and skill you get at the same time. The fellow students are great, no ego's and in most part I suspect as a result of the talent and skill of professor Rafeal and Ana. They are excellent teachers, patient and very helpful. I tried Jui Jitsu 7 years ago and quit because the instruction wasn't very structured and many of the students had "nasty" attitudes and ego's.
